mike swick josh burkman ufc fight night 12
Mike Swick (10-2) is in talks to make his long-awaited welterweight debut against Josh Burkman (9-4) at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23, according to MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) sources.

No official bout agreements have been signed; however, the match up is more or less a “done deal” from what we hear.

This will be the first fight at 170 pounds for “Quick” inside the Octagon. The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product made the decision to drop down from 185 (middleweight) after getting outmuscled by the much larger and stronger Yushin Okami at UFC 69: “Shootout” back in April.

Swick was booked to fight Jonathan Goulet at UFC Fight Night 11 in September; however, he sustained severe injuries to his ribs while sparring that forced him off the SpikeTV card.

Burkman is coming off of an underwhelming performance against Forrest Petz at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” in October. “The People’s Warrior” won the split decision on the judges scorecards but not with the majority of fans who saw it the other way. He’ll certainly need to be on top of his game if he indeed draws Swick.

Both fighters competed on separate seasons of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). There’s a possibility — based on the popularity of the combo — that this bout could be the main event of the evening. Stay tuned for more details.

You need to get some people to help with the updates to share the workload rather than have all the weight on your shoulders. And no, i’m not volunteering, just giving a bit of advice. Offer people to send in their previous work in regards to writing for internet websites so that not only can they post updates and news, but once in a while they can write an article or two in regards to the latest news.

Also, there’s been updates in regards to GSP vs Hughes - GSP’s people say HE asked for the fight, Hughes however posted in his blog that HE asked for the fight. Still, i would have liked to have seen Hughes vs Serra considering we know how GSP can manhandle Hughes.

…you run a website and don’t keep a laptop with you at all times? DUDE!! Should we all pitch in 5bucks?

I’m curious to see how Swick looks at WW. He was almost a contender at MW, so the weight drop should really do him some good. Only problem is that WW is super deep.

actually swick is one of the largest welterweightsin the UFC almost exactly george st.pierres size, walking in to the octagon at around 185-188 for his fights, burkman is actually
smaller entering the octagon at around 178-181 he was 181 immediatly before the karo fight.

so swick is actually bigger and in my opinion faster as well.

swick should KO burkman easily.

Swick will be dropping weight and will likely be a bit weaker, Burkman likes to bang… Swick could capitalize on this fact.

I am gonna go against the grain and say Burkman cuts swick in the first 20 sec, then finishes him via wild swing in the last minute of the round… Life will be rough for Swick in the WW divison.

If Swick does win look for him to get matched up with Ryo.

After Burkman’s shitty performance at UFC 77, I see him coming back very hungry.

Burkman is a very strong grabbler with huge slams, and that is Mike Swick’s weakness.

Burkman wins via decision.

I like Burkman pulling off a win via decision. I was never really impressed by swicks game. Maybe I just didn’t like him at 185. at 170 he has a chance of being one of the tallest WW, and enjoy a reach advantage over anyone in the division with the exception of John Fitch. This is a good fight for a fight night card… I have no complaints.

i just dont see josh as a champion, i know he is up there with tito in big bear i can see him keeping a steady middle place throughout his career, never falling down to low but never excelling much either, i think of the guys he has up there in bb joe lauzon is the one to watch out for , now he has champion written all over him - i see swick ripping burkman apart .

Nice match up. Nathan had suggested that Swick fight Karo instead. I think that Karo is way too high up the ladder to introduce Swick to the WW division. Outside of Serra, Hughes, GSP, and Jon Fitch, it is hard to say that Karo has not cemented himself as #5. Yeah, he doesn’t finish fights, but do people finish him?

As far as picking a winner for this fight, I can see two logical outcomes - Swick ending the fight, or Burkman winning by decision. Swick should definitely control the standup up and look to keep the fight right there standing with his speed and reach advantage. Yushin Okami frustrated and beat Mike Swick in his last fight. He did it by wrestling Swick to the ground, and doing a little bit of ground and pound. That should be Josh Burkman’s gameplan for this fight, and if he can keep Swick on the ground, he will win a decision. However, while standing, Swick can end the fight at any moment. Also, Burkman will need to be careful when going in for a takedown that he doesn’t find himself cought in a Swickatine.

this is an awesome fight for a fight night i could see this being a ppv televised fight and we get to see it for free on a ufn. and we dont even know if this is a main event.

as of now the rumored bouts i have heard of are

Nate Diaz vs. Alvin Robinson
Patrick Cote vs. Drew Mcfredies
Mike Swick vs. Josh Burkman
cole Miller vs. jeremy Stephenson
Thiago Tavares vs. Michioro Omigawa
Kurt Pelligrino vs. Alberto Crane
Matt Wiman vs. Justin Buchholz
also cory hill is rumored to be on the card

This is shaping up to be the best fight night card ever i hope it is a three hour one so we can see as many of the fights as we can.

I see Mike swick winning this fight if he can stay off his back as josh burkman is a very strong physically and is known for his wrestling gnp and big slams. I would not be suprised to see swick out muscled again in this fight. I think burkman wins if he sticks to his strenghs and does not try to stand and trade as he has very sloppy standup and poor cardio. Josh only throws wild haymakers wich in turn leave him open to get picked apart by somebody of swick caliber.

Also, it says that Joe Lauzon is training in Big Bear. That is news to me. The last I knew (and that’s as of November 17th), Joe Lauzon was training in Hawaii with BJ Penn. And, they both looked to be quite happy.

I sure do hope Swick demolishes Burkeman. Swick has skills to go along with a good fighter’s heart and I think he is champion material. Burkeman on the other hand has been a top promoter in UFC Snoozefest ‘07, a tour we all wish would end. I got Swick 2nd round TKO.

Swick is basically fighting a smaller Okami. Question is, is Burkman strong enough to hold Swick down and win a decision. Swick’s pretty skinny, but Burkman isn’t nearly as big as Okami. Could be a very interesting fight, jettisoning one of them instantly into the top 10 WW.

Swick will win but Burkman could finish him. It will come down to conditioning.
