jon fitch
MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) learned earlier this morning that welterweight contender Jon Fitch (15-2) has been approached about fighting Akihiro Gono (27-12-7) at UFC 82 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 1.

Fitch will fight on the card; however, Gono is not a lock to be his opponent at this time. Our sources indicate that the Fitch camp is working hard to line up a showdown with Karo Parisyan instead. That fight makes the most sense in terms of clearing up the 170-pound log jam.

In addition, it doesn’t really offer much of an up-side for Fitch — Gono just won his Octagon debut against Tamdan McCrory via submission (armbar) at UFC 78: “Validation” this past weekend. Fitch, on the other hand, is undefeated in the UFC (7-0) and has not lost a bout since 2002.

His most recent win over Diego Sanchez at UFC 76: “Knockout” moved him closer to a title shot … or so it seemed (Georges St. Pierre has the first crack against the winner of Matt Serra and Matt Hughes sometime in early 2008.)

What makes the most sense?

Have Fitch fight Parisyan in March and the Hughes/Serra winner against St. Pierre should headline a pay-per-view (PPV) shortly thereafter. Then, the Fitch-Parisyan winner would fight the winner of Hughes/Serra vs. St. Pierre later in 2008.

Not to take anything away from Gono — he’s talented and very experienced. He has everything to gain from a fight with Fitch and nothing to lose. It’s the exact opposite for Fitch.

This news makes very little sense, unless of course Parisyan earned a guaranteed spot behind St. Pierre with his recent win over Ryo Chonan and he won’t fight again until mid-2008.

Stay tuned for more details on this developing fight announcement. In the meantime, check out the UFC 82 fight card right here.

Fitch vs. Karo is the only fight that makes sense for Fitch. After that, give the winner the title shot already!

wagnerav - exactly my thoughts…if the UFC doesn’t make this fight happen, well then I just don’t know what they are thinking. Like mania says…Gono has everything to gain and Fitch has everything to lose if they fight, it is not worth it for Fitch at all. KARO vs FITCH for god sakes.

Fitch would destroy Karo. Karo was winded and looked horrible plus out of shape along with slow during his last fight and Fitch would just pick him apart. Fitch vs. St. Pierre for a title shot makes more sense but UFC might be able to get some more fights out of the mix by pulling stupid crap like this.

If he doesn’t fight Karo, he should fight the loser of Serra/Hughes. If he wins that, he should get the winner of GSP vs winner of Serra/Hughes for the belt.

I hope his camp tells the UFC to go screw themselves. Everyone was turning him down when they had everything to lose and nothing to gain. I hope he returns the favor!

Fitch has been under the radar, not because he’s been over looked by Joe Silva, but because he’s a snore fest. Even with a considerable size advantage over Sanchez, he did absolutely nothing to make it a decisive, and more importantly, he didn’t show a reason to be considered as a contender. Pass.

Fitch will not fight GSP for a title shot, GSP is already facing the winner of Serra/Hughes. Fitch should fight Karo for the #1 contender spot. After his last fight, I don’t see Karo beating Fitch, he looked out of shape and very lackluster. Fitch would have destroyed the Karo that showed up at UFC 78. I believe Fitch has all the tools to one day be champ, although in his fight with Diego he got caught in a lot of submission attempts that if he were fighting someone like Hughes, Serra, or GSP they would have finished him.

Fitch would not “destroy” Karo. Karo only trained for three weeks for the fight with Chonan. I’m not sure why, but if you think he would take a fight with Fitch and then slack off during training, you’re nuts.

Karo has fought the best at 170 and has only been stopped once by Sherk in RSF. Fitch hasn’t faced the same level of competition as Karo and quite honestly his skill set isn’t anywhere close to the level of Karo’s either.

Am I saying that Karo would destroy Fitch? No. Fitch is one of the toughest guys in the UFC at 170, but Karo is one of the BEST fighters in the world at 170 and now trains with one of the best camps in the U.S. Xtreme Couture is lightyears ahead of AKA and Randy is one of the best gameplanners out there. Fitch has heavy hands and a seemingly good chin, so a win over Karo isn’t out of his reach. But in all honesty, this would be Karo’s fight to lose, not Fitch’s fight to win.

I would love to see this fight happen. I am a huge fan of Karo, and I also happen to be a fan of Fitch as well.

With all of this TUF bull, the 170 division is starting to look like the 155 division. The UFC really needs to stop holding the titles hostage when filming these shows. Serra vs. Hughes should have happened months ago and GSP vs. the winner of that match should be happening in December. That way Fitch or Karo would get a shot in Spring 2008 instead of summer. Kill the reality show and concentrate on the events! Seriously, TUF ratings are tanking and the UFC is taking off without it, so why bother in the end?

If the UFC puts him up against Gono, it would be a huge injustice to Fitch. He is on the brink of contendership.

I agree that Karo would be a logical next fight for him. Fitch looked amazing against Diego. He’s a big tall welterweight with great wrestling. He made Diego look very weak against him.

Diego vs. Karo was a great, evenly matched fight until Karo gassed. I see Fitch being stronger than Karo in wrestling/clinch-work as well, and his length will help him in the stand-up. Karo won’t be able to Judo throw him as easily as he did to Diego.

Fitch is gonna destroy Gono on the feet… ground he can control him aswell. Gono didnt do too well against the taller Tamden.. how’s this make sense? He beat a top contender, with only one loss… and fights Gono? Not that Gono isnt a good fighter, but ummm… not quite contender quality. Prolly trying to prolong a Fitch/GSP showdown to get more anticipation of it… build Fitch’s rep a bit..

Fitch would seriously dominate Karo…
Fitch is stronger, taller, better on his feet, and would control most of the fight on the ground aswell. Either way… I dont see Fitch being challeneged in any fight in 08 unless he fights GSP, Hughes, or Penn…

The UFC has short changed Fitch for long enough. Don’t give hime another easy fight. He has proved that he is in the top 3 welterweights in the world. Give him a fight with a legitimate contender. Top 10 Welter weights

1. Georges St. Pierre
2. Jon Fitch
3. Matt Hughes
4. Josh Koscheck
5. Matt Serra
6. Dieago Sanchez
7. Marcus Davis
8. Karo Parisyan
9. Thiago Alvez
10.Chris Lytle

I say give him the fight with his teammate Josh Koscheck, should make for some interestin drama.

Sakuraba isn’t that old, but he may be worn down from all the wars, but still sakuraba is one of my favorite fighters to ever fight in mma, and I would love to see him in the octagon, 1 last time, at least! I know that Dana white loves Sakuraba, so it is possible, but unlikely.

Karo has definately earned his shot behind GSP. He could lose it all by fighting Fitch. Fitch has everything to gain by fighting Karo but Karo could have a serious setback. If I was Karo I would not take a fight with Fitch, but the UFC might just do it in the hope of pushing Karo further back again. I don’t think they want to see the belt around his waist, I think they smell more money elsewhere. I would definately like to see Karo fight Fitch, but if I was Karo I try to avoid that fight as much as possible. He has worked hard to get back into title contention and his big win pushed him right up there. He does not want to see that all slip away.

A Fitch/Gono fight would really upset me. Jon Fitch has already cemented himself in the Top 5 - that fact cannot be argued. He may actually be Top 3 (he already is in my opinion), rather, he will be Top 3 after the Hughes/Serra fight. No disrespect to Gono, but Fitch is absolutely ready for a #1 contender fight and has proven himself time and time again.

As soon as I read the headline, I thought that he should be fighting Karo or the loser of Hughes/Serra. Much to my delight, I read that Fitch is asking for Karo instead. Good move on his part. Every fight that Fitch would ask for, his ‘opponent’ would turn down the fight, unwilling to fight Jon Fitch.

An unfortunate thing is that his next fight at UFC 82 wil take place before GSP get his crack at the title. Just how much time (considering injuries during training) it takes for GSP to get his title shot this time could prove costly to the winner of Fitch/Karo if it happens. The winner would most likely find themselves in a situation where they are waiting like 6-8 months for their next fight.
I hope his camp tells the UFC to go screw themselves. Everyone was turning him down when they had everything to lose and nothing to gain. I hope he returns the favor!
Have you seen any other Jon Fitch fights? Fitch/Burkman used to be on youtube, but its not there anymore. PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch that fight, and then re-watch the Karo/Burkman fight. You will see that Fitch clearly dominated Burkman no matter where the fight went, and Karo did not handle Burkman with such ease. It went the distance, of course, and I believe it won fight of the night, meaning it was not only exciting, but relatively close. After the Fitch fight, Burkman looked like an alien!!!

Fitch is no where near being a boring fighter. He is one of the handful of fighters that truely ‘brings it’ every time. If you want to see a real WW ’snore fest’, please watch Diego vs Koscheck. THAT was a boring fight, AND it earned Kos a #1 contender fight against GSP.

THERE’S NO DOUBT THAT THAT SHOULD BE A GREAT FIGHT.

RIGHT NOW KARO PARISIAN VS JON FITCH WOULD BE THE MOST LOGICAL FIGHT RIGHT NOW TO SEE WHO LINES UP NEXT FOR A TITLE SHOT. WINNER OF THAT SHOULD FACE WINNER OF HUGHES VS GSP TO THEN FIGHT SERRA ( THIS WAY SERRA HAS TIME TO RECOOP DUE TO HIS BACK INJURY.)

KARO VS FITCH IS THE WAY TO GO.. BUT UNFORTUNATE..

GEORGE ST. PIERRE
GEORGE ST. PIERRE
GEORGE ST. PIERRE
GEROGE ST. PIERRE
GEORGE ST. PIERRE

DID I MENTION GEORGE ST. PIERRE??

THE RISE OF GSP IS HERE.. THIS TIME I THINK GSP WILL STAY CHAMP FOR A LONG TIME.. NO MATTER WHO STEPS UP.

BUT I DO THINK KARO PARISIAN HAS PROVEN MORE THAN FITCH, KARO DESERVES A TITLE SHOT!!

HI,
When GSP,lost to Serra they didn’t give GSP an easy road back to the top.. they threw at him the top contenders out there at him.but GSP survived..

why have they not given Fitch the same route before a title shot at GSP??,they should have had him face KARO,JOS,then if he won on either of these fights then he should have a title shot with GSP…

MONEY is the name of the game..

this is the way i see this happening….

GSP beats Fitch,GSB will be Rematched with BJ Penn..

Fitch beats GSP,Fitch will fight JOS,not Karo for Karo just came off a Big lose..
