There are main events, and there are MAIN EVENTS.
Dan “Hollywood” Henderson (22-6), after much resistance, has conceded to moving down a weight class to try and dethrone current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva (20-4).
The bout is tentatively scheduled to headline UFC 82 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on March 1, 2008.
The announcement was made during the post-fight press conference for UFC 78, which took place Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Henderson is coming off a disappointing loss against current Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 75. While the result may not have been what he wanted, the bout was a showcase of upper-level mixed martial arts.
At the time, Henderson was steadfast in his decision to remain at 205 pounds.
In addition to knocking out Wanderlei Silva at PRIDE 33, Hendo is also only one of three people to hold victories over current UFC heavyweight contender Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira.
He’ll need every ounce of that experience against “The Spider,” who has completely dominated the UFC middleweight division with five straight wins, including four devastating (T)KO’s.
Silva is also considered by many to be the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighter and may solidify that ranking with a dominant performance over Henderson, one of the few remaining fighters seen as a viable threat to the middleweight title.
Things could get very interesting in 2008.
Stay tuned.

WOOHOO!! It will be awesome.
That seems like the only great fight they can hand to the Spida. An Okami rematch is not half as good as this. I can’t wait. Bam!
If Henderson is unsuccessful, he will just be the first of many LHWs moving to MW to take on Silva.
Henderson is a true MW anyway, and this is where he belongs.
THANK YOU!!!!!! I have to say that I have been waiting for this forever along with most MMA fans. Dan is my favorite fighter. He epitomizes what this sport is, a sport, and olympic level athlete adds a lot of cred to the sport, and it makes me happy that there is someone who may beat Anderson, this will be a war. Anderson is not going to roll over for anyone not even Hendo, but Hendo has a chin of IRON!!! Never been KO’d, and if you can’t knock him out he WILL be a handful, and Rampage did a good job nullifying the wrestling, something I don’t think Anderson can do. Here’s to praying for WAR!!! and for me a new MW champ. Here’s Hendo’s chance to make MMA history AGAIN!!! First concurrent multi-weight champ, and now the first UNIFIED MW Champ, sad he couldn’t take out Page, but in due time!!!! WAR HENDO!!!!!!!
Pretty much the only guy they have right now to put up against silva that stands a chance…Okami rematch i gueeesss but lets get real. It will be good to see how silva will stand up against a top level wrestler who is as strong as henderson…It will also be good to see how silva does with henderson to determine if he should step up and fight Rampage if he Rampage has the belt at that time. I could see it happeneing and silva inflicting a Wanderlei Silva style beating on Rampage
I could see it happeneing and silva inflicting a Wanderlei Silva style beating on Rampage
That’s funny, thinking that Anderson would just run over Rampage.
Let’s first see what happens with the Dangerous vs The Spider fight, that will answer questions. Nevertheless it will be a showdown between those two! Can’t wait!
im going with silva via submission rd 2
silvas bjj is going to play a huge role in this fight and I believe it is the x factor. These next couple cards are awesome! 79 looks amazing, 80 needs about 1 or 2 more big fights, and 81 is still developing. It’s about time the UFC is putting top talent vs top talent in every card (except the last 2:-p
It doesn’t get much better than this. I look forward to seeing an all out war between these two super athletes. If anybody has a chance of dethroning Silva, its Hollywood. This is almost too good to be true! I would pay twice the price of pay per view to see this fight alone. I cant predict a winner of this and truthfully it doesn’t matter who wins. The only thing that matters to me is getting to witness history, mma at its best, and two future legends and hall of famers getting it on. Its going to be crazy. Go Hendo and Go Silva!!!!!!
GREAT match up. It will make great PPV $$ for UFC and it’s a genuine fight between 2 great fighters.
Anderson will win via TKO strikes I think
What a great fight!
UFC 82 is sooo far away though. It’s like getting excited about Christmas in September.
Henderson will obliterate him. I think da spider would even lose to some of the welter weights like (GSP/Hughs/Karo) They all cut to lose weight so going up would be no problem.
If henderson does beat him then what??? Who would take him on really though.
Bisping will likely go MW and end up street pizza. I truly think MW division is the easiest division.
I imagine the UFC nagged him alot, Not sure if its a great move though… He should have waited after 2 or so more fights in lhw and see what happens.
yes!!!
Wow, this fight is impossible to call in my opinion, Silva’s hands against Hendo’s chin and Hendo’s wrestling against Silva’s jiu jitsu.
I Thought Leban Was Next In Line
I dont See Anyone Stopin Sliva.. Even Hendo.
prediction…..new middle wright champ! (if it happens)
Henderson will obliterate him. I think da spider would even lose to some of the welter weights like (GSP/Hughs/Karo) They all cut to lose weight so going up would be no problem.
This is comedy gold right here! GSP might put up a fight but Karo couldn’t lay and pray his way to a victory and Hughes couldn’t handle Spider’s strikes or ground game.
this is gonna be a great fight and like someone else said, hendos chin and silvas hands and hendos wrestling and sivas bjj.i think chris leben and ed herman should also fight, just throwing it out there
I won’t under estimate Silva in this fight though but I definitely feel Hendo is the better fighter. He’s a fist slinging cowboy with grappling skills to back it up… One bad mofo.
Hendo better get it in his hard head, that a majority of this fight has to go to the ground… Hendo better ease up on the brawling in this fight or he will lose.
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
Hendo’s gonna destroy him
Yhis may be one of the greatest fights in MMA history! Will Hendo be able to take this fight to the ground and display his dominant wrestling, or will Anderson Silva once again prove that his striking is on an entirely different level than the rest of the UFC? Should be a great fight!
hendo has to go to sleep sometime, i guess ufc 82, will be venue, cause anderson is unbeatable right now
Watch out Mania, you might have somebody saying that you are spreading rumors because you don’t have “proof”
lol.
I wont say who, but when I announced that this morning so guy jumped all over me.
I am going to this event.
WAR HENDO!
That’s a hell of a fight, right there.
Props to Dana for putting it together.
another unification fight?
Great Hell! This ought to be a good fight.
Unless Silva connects with the perfect strike or catches an unwary Hendo with a submission (and that’s entirely possible), I just don’t see a way Hendo loses this match.
In a pure comparison of power, experience, and ability I think Hendo comes out on top. He ought to be able to impose his will and overpower Silva.
So, UFC 82 should be in March? Damn, that’s a long way away…
Awesome, looking forward to this fight, hendo is the only middle weight to really give silva some competition. In a way this is sort of a dream match, kinda like gsp vs silva before everyone lost faith in him because of the serra fight.
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
Sixx, you beat me to it!!!I jumped out of my seat and yelled so loud that I woke my kids up and ticked my wife off! Oh well. If this really happens the build up will be incredible. “Spider” is a freaking monster. Hendo will need every bit of that chin he’s got. I don’t think it would be worth putting money on because I think Vegas would call it a toss-up. They are even money on their feet and Silva’s bjj will be countered by Hendo’s wrestling and g and p. If the UFC puts together a good undercard this could be the PPV of the year. Make it happen!!!!
Wow, match of the year….and the year hasnt even started yet.
This is a really tough one to call. Anderson has only had to show dominance in the UFC over ONE solid fighter in Rich Franklin before being dubbed p4p greatest and what not. This will really show how good Anderson really is. He does have the best hands, however, my moneys on HENDO.
Yes, this could really be match-up of the year already, Havnt been excited for a fight as much as this since BJ/Pierre fought.
I’d rather see BJ PENN vs Matt Hughes III…….
I’d rather see BJ PENN vs Matt Hughes III…….
That wont be a good fight, a good match up. BJ has showed dominance over Hughes every time. I wanna see that to, just so BJ can shut him up and avenge that fluke loss, but not as far as good, even, exciting match ups go.
Speaking of witch did you see Joe Lauzon’s fight last night? The training with Penn and his gym DEFINENTLY shows.
That rear naked, he even had that guys arm in, just like Penn had Pulver’s.
I can’t wait for this one..wow. So the March card seems to be set for the 1st then? Hopefully that will mean Montreal in April.
Speaking of witch did you see Joe Lauzon’s fight last night? The training with Penn and his gym DEFINENTLY shows.

Yes I did. I’m really happy Joe moved out to Hilo to train with BJ. Not only is he going to benefit from that, but he will have a good CORNER for his fights.
DAMN! i just got really really nervous, and excited at the same time…who knows whats the hells gonna happen in this fight…this is why i watch this sport, for fights like this…i can’t wait

What was this guy thinking, just because he ran over Rich doesn’t mean that he would run over Rampage, actually if anything it would be the opposite, anderson would be the one getting ran over.
Wow I can’t wait for this fight to happen.
It means that Silva’s day as champ will be coming to an end.
Not that it matters or than anyone cares or believes me but i was a perfect 6-6 in my picks last night! Even though I figured the last one was a given.
I WILL BE THERE!!!! I live in Ohio and I attend everyone. I will always get GREAT $300 tickets instead of the $400 because honestly they are better seats(unless you are 1 row back) OHHHHHHHH I can’t wait!!!

I’d rather see BJ PENN vs Matt Hughes III…….
What are you talking about penn/hughes 2 was a wicked fight, maybe not as exciting as silva/hendo might be but it would be great to see hughes/penn 3 I would love to see it, also a gsp/penn 2 fight would be great. For some reason I don’t want to see gsp/hughes 3 though, don’t know why, just don’t.
I personally think this could be one of the best fights ever in the weight class I truely think Dan is the man but Anderson will win this fight.
how bad would that suck if this fight ended up in a draw, doubt it though, silva first round ko,shocks the world
I can’t believe it! I said that Hendo is the only threat and now the fight is going to happen! Hendo is no joke!.Anderson will be pushed to his limit. Anderson will not walk through Dan! it is going to be a War! I can’t wait!
Now we’re talking! Great match…. and, a new middleweight champion. Done. And on a different note… I think Stevenson is gonna give Penn fits. Could be a big upset… I hope not, but just a feeling.
Excellent matchup! These are the type of fights that will keep the UFC on top and M-1, Bodog and Elite-XC on the bottom and looking up!
Dan H is the only fighter I can think of that doest want to drop wiegt classes even after a tuff loss which really could have went either way ….thats because this guy in unlike any other fighter he knows he can kick the shit out of light heavywieghts he has even faught heavywieghts just like the article reffered to in nogiera.
There is one fighter right now that can dismantle A silva and thats Dan Henderson. Remember how lutter was able to take silva down with his weak takedowns without even setting them up, just imagine how easy it will be for a world class greco roman wrestler to get silva on his back anytime he pleases but the funny thing is He probably wont even look for the takedown he will want to stand and knock silva out.
everyone is excited about the possibility of this fight everyone except A silva
good be one of the fights of the year

I know it was exciting it was a good fight, it just was too much Penn all the way, this is one of those fights that is really hard to call, so even, so exciting. Should be a war, I have no idea who will come out on top, but if I had to pick, i’d say Hendo.
I thought Dan H fought Nogiera twice in pride and lossed both times when did Dan ever beat nogiera
oh my god this is too good to believe. so i won’t, until i see it officially announced by ufc.
He beat him in Rings in 1999. I don’t think Silva has the power to KO Dan and Dan will be able to get him down and keep him there. Henderson by UD.
Well I don’t expect Anderson to finish Dan off so we’re going to see how good Anderson’s cardio is. Could be the only hole in Anderson’s game.
I sorta feel bad for Hendo. His first fight was against Jackson and now Silva? Welcome to the Ufc eh
He beat him in Rings in 1999. I don’t think Silva has the power to KO Dan and Dan will be able to get him down and keep him there. Henderson by UD.
Yeah I was gonna say, but according to the Pride site, both of the noguera brothers have defeated Dan since then, using the fact that Dan beat Big NOG back in teh day is more hype than anything, kinda decieving. But regardless, Dan hung with both of the NOG brothers pretty well for how much bigger they are, and how good they are at there respective size.
I think Anderson has the ability to KO anybody, but combine Dan’s chin with his skill sets, and I think i will be very difficult for Anderson to land a KO shot. I agree with you’r prediction, except via S.D.
Old News
my bro read about something like this about a month ago
I don’t know who to pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WARRRRRRRRRRR BOTHHHH!
Good for Henderson. If this fight truly is to happen, Hendo most likely used moving to middleweight as tremendous leverage in his negotiations.
However…
I think Silva will pick Henderson apart from the outside and forgo the clinch game. Silva may not knock Henderson out quickly, but after a few rounds of being peppered with strikes Hendo will wish he had been.
Henderson’s best chance at scoring a takedown against Silva will most likely come from an errant kick. And should Dan score takedowns against Anderson there is no guarantee Hendo will inflict significant damage there.
On a completely different note:
Who else thinks the UFC has been neglecting the heavyweight division lately?
why would they announce this at the post fight press conference and not right after the fight unless the fight isnt really set in stone. also does anyone know who made this statemant? dana?
Hendo will probably take him down over and over, but Silva’s ju jitsu may overcome Hendo’s GnP.
Well I don’t expect Anderson to finish Dan off so we’re going to see how good Anderson’s cardio is. Could be the only hole in Anderson’s game.
It’s possible, but I doubt it though. Anderson does a drill where he goes 5 rounds with different partners. And this is against top fighters. He did it with Chute Boxe with guys like Wandy and the Rua brothers. And now he trains with Vitor, Machida, and the Nog brothers.
He beat him in Rings in 1999. I don’t think Silva has the power to KO Dan and Dan will be able to get him down and keep him there. Henderson by UD.
I don’t think Anderson would KO Hendo w/ his hands, but he can use his hands to set up his elbows, knees, and kicks, which could definitely knock anybody out. However, Dan’s wrestling is excellent as we all know, and any kicks or knees thrown by Silva could turn into a takedown for Dan. Very interesting match-up. The 3 most likely scenarios:
-A close decision
-Hendo by GnP
-Silva catches Hendo with a huge shot and finishes
I sorta feel bad for Hendo. His first fight was against Jackson and now Silva? Welcome to the Ufc eh
This is what he wanted. He was guaranteed title shots at both divisions.

man, you stupid, anderson had knee surgery a month prior to that fight, and even had trouble walking right after the fight even though he didn’t use his legs too much.
Thank you zuffa for acquiring pride, this fight is 10x better than the liddell vs wandy fight. Anderson by ko, of course :p
Is this match official or just rumoured? If it does happen and is for the belt it will be awesome cos 5 rnds means probable tko for someone. I will go for silva, Win in the clinch with knees. If Dan defends the clinch well he will probably win though. Great fight anyways if it does go ahead
Defo silva by knockout round 2 - 3:01 , put your house on it !
Wow, this fight is impossible to call in my opinion, Silva’s hands against Hendo’s chin and Hendo’s wrestling against Silva’s jiu jitsu.
Absolutly spot on, impossible to call.
However if Silva runs through Hendo you may as well pack up the middleweight division and retire the belt because no-one else can touch him.
Its a great fight, neither of these guys have ever been knocked out and both have great striking and ground work. I just feel Silva will be too quick for Hendo and will win on majority decision. Hendos got a hell of a punch but I think this fight will be very similar to the Silva vs Lee Murray fight. Hendo will be looking for the big punch but Silva will be taking his time with leg kicks and picking his punch carefully.
This will be one of UFCs best fights ever! NICE job Dana White! After the Franklin lost, I thought Hendo would be the only with a chin that could take the Spider. I think Hendo’s wrestling background his ground and pound will squash the Spider. The Spider better watch that Wandi vs Hendo fight and pray that Hendo doesn’t open that can on him. I don’t think I can wait that long!!
this will be the best fight of the year, but I really dont wanna c the spida loose his title to henderson because henderson isnt commited to 185 diision, he will take his title and flip flop between 185 and 205, which will mean less middleweight defenses. I hope the spida can hold on to the gold.
Wow, this fight is impossible to call in my opinion, Silva’s hands against Hendo’s chin and Hendo’s wrestling against Silva’s jiu jitsu.
This is the best way to put it.. this fight is un-callable… this is gonna be fantastic.

I’m pretty sure it’s official, it was posted at sherdog.com as well, so it’s pretty convincing that it will hapen.
I think Anderson will win, with Henderson all I see is takedowns and yeah a ko punch but with Andersons reach and pinpoint striking ability with every limb he has and bjj if henderson does get close enough to take him down.
I cant see henderson winning.
I reckon
fight of the year!!!!!!!!
i think anderson will take him, but i think it will be close, i hope ufc can sign hendo to a long term deal before the fight
Rampage has a GOOD chin and Dan clearly rocked Rampage a little with a few hits back in September, the dude is a bad mofo….this will be a damn good fight
As most of you know, Diaz, Hendo and Fitch are my 3 favorite fighters. This fight is the best news I’ve heard since I found out my wife wasn’t pregnant! I CAN NOT wait for this fight to go down. It will by far be Anderson’s toughest opponent to date. However, I don’t know if the same can be said for Henderson, that is, Anderson being Henderson’s toughest opponent to date. Got a meeting to go to, but I’ll read thru the comments when I get back and resond.
Dan Henderson = the first ever unified MW champion of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anderson Silva by K.O
I love Dan Henderson too and think that he is one of the most dangerous fighters in mma.
Anderson is one of the greatest too but none of them will ever whoop Rampage’s ass.
Fedor is scared to fight Randy.
Hey, here’s something I meant to say in my first post. WHY is UFC 82 in OHIO, AGAIN?? This is like their 4th PPV in the last year. That just isn’t fair to all the UFC fans across the country.
If henderson does beat him then what??? Who would take him on really though.
A fight between Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin will be a very marketable fight. If Hendo beats Silva, the UFC will put Franlin in a winnable #1 contender fight so fast his head will spin.

Henderson will obliterate him. I think da spider would even lose to some of the welter weights like (GSP/Hughs/Karo) They all cut to lose weight so going up would be no problem.
I agree. GSP would have the best chance at winning of any WW, and the ONLY other WW that can give Anderson a run for his money is Jon Fitch. Unless Anderson somehow dispenses of Henderson, than I would say that Fitch doesn’t have a chance.
I’d rather see BJ PENN vs Matt Hughes III…….
LOL, was this a joke? I mean, I like to see Penn/Hughes 3, but we’ve already seen that fight twice. Hendo/Silva is a DREAM match up and a title unification bout. In my opinion, the two arent’ even worth comparing. That’s how big of a fight Hendo/Silva is.
Old News

Yeah, we all read something about it like 5 months ago, but Hendo was not willing to drop back down to MW. Everybody wanted Hendo to fight Silva, but Hendo was reluctant to cut the weight. THis is the first time that he said he will, and its the first time the UFC announced it, meaning that it became OFFICIAL at the UFC 78 press coference.
I wonder if Rich Franklin’s personal nose doctor will be ringside for Hendo?? Go Spider!!!
Hendo will NOT be KO by Silva… my guess is decision 50/50
I like both these guys! I can’t wait!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!
This could end up being the greatest fight in history!

I’m a hendo fan and believe he will win… but Silva is smart and literally at his peek, he’s been known to go to wrestling colleges here in the states and practice his wrestling for a few weeks…. I’m sure his wrestling defense is getting better all the time… I believe this will be a strategic battle… and I’m surely not counting Silva out… he will have a few opportunities on his feet and if he can capitalize on that he will win.
