Yoshihiro Akiyama dropped Denis Kang — a top middleweight mixed martial artist — with a crushing uppercut at “HERO’S Korea 2007″ over the weekend.

Kang is often discussed here at MMAmania.com and elsewhere as being a mandatory addition to the not-so-stacked UFC 185-pound division. In fact, the American Top Team standout recently opted to fight in HERO’s rather than inside the Octagon.

Not saying this recent loss changes anything — he’s still a fantastic fighter. Just want to pass along some sweet footage of the stoppage.

Wow. Yoshihiro Akiyama looks impressive. He is 10-1, and his only loss came in his 2nd fight. He has NEVER been to a decision. 5 wins by submission and 5 wins by T/KO. He is 32 years old right now. I think that this is someone that the UFC should look into to bolster their MW division.

Mania, or anyone else, do you know what Yoshihiro Akiyama’s contract with Hero’s is - like how many more fights?

The MW division does NEED stocking…. It’s great to see a Champ (AS) who has a chance at a decent reign with the title, but that’s no fun if there is NOBODY AT ALL that can even come close to challenging him..

We need more MW’s!!!

Get Akiyama and Kang in the UFC. When jason Mcdonald is in the top 5 of a division, the division obviously needs help

DAMMIT KANG!!!…..Keep your chin tucked man! Kang is one of my favorites & it sux to see one of your fav’s get beaten. Luckily the guy is all heart. Judging from his past he will benefit from this loss & come back stronger. He went on a losing streak early in his career & bounced back by going on a complete 20 fight winning streak.

Akiyama is no joke by the way. I just recently became familiar with him & this guy is official. His last 3 wins in a row:

Kang by KO
Sakuraba by TKO (ruled a bogus NC but u gotta see the fight for your self)
Melvin Manhoef Armbar

That’s 3 dominant wins over top-tier talent. I think those wins solidify him as a clear contender. I for one will be watching him closely.

I want to see both of these guys in the UFC. They need to loosen up and allow the fighters to have some breathing room so that everyone feels it is ok to fight for them. The talent in the UFC is deep, but just imagine how much deeper it could be if it truly had all the best fighters.

Kang is still one of my favorite fighters, anyone can get caught. DK has some of the best boxing in all of MMA so my guess is he just made a mistake caused by taking too many hits prior to the KO. He hasn’t lost in a long time so I hope losing in front of his family doesn’t take too much away from his mental edge in his next fight. Kang is still a bad ass with some of the most well-rounded skills anywhere to be found in mixed martial arts.

Ok, after watching the fight in it’s entirety, aside from a weak take-down attempt, Kang was definately winning the round. Not to take anything away from Akiyama but that makes the loss even worse.

Imagine what it must feel like as fighter to know you’re clearly getting the better of your opponent & then “POW”! Next thing you know you’re waking up wondering what happened.

Kang had blood in his eyes, so he probably did not see that uppercut coming, but this Akiyama guy is literally the real deal.

He is probably one of the best MMA fighters you have not heard of.

He practically man hadled Denis Kang who by far was one of the best middleweight fighters in the world.

I disagree. Akiyama was outboxing Kang before he caught him with the huge right uppercut.

What’s to disagree with? I said Kang was winning the round, not outboxing Akiyama. Also, I wouldnt call landing a punch or 2 here & there “outboxing”.

I wouldnt put it past some of the misinformed zealots that frequent this site but I dont recall anyone saying Kang would “kill Silva”. However, myself included, I did see a few folks stating that he would give Silva a good fight & I firmly believe this to be true. I’ll say for sure that Kang should be able to smoke everyone in 185 besides Okami, Franklin & Silva.

How many Denis Kang matches have you watched? Just this one? Are you a New Breed Fan?

Denis Kang lost, so what? I guess you thought Randy Couture was overrated when he lost to Chuck Liddell too.

Denis Kang is 26-10
Randy Couture is 16-8

I dont think Denis Kang is overrated what-so-ever. That is like saying Shogun is overrated. He lost so what. Get over it.

How exactly was Kang winning? Akiyama bloodied him early. Kang was inaccurate with his striking, and got denied badly on a takedown attempt. Akiyama was showing ring control, circling Kang. I’m not sure if Kang stopped moving so that Akiyama would come forward, but it didn’t work out in his favour. And this is coming from a Denis Kang fan. I cheer for all the Canadians in MMA, especially GSP.

Uhh on Kang Sucks, he lost a fight. His MMA Career is finished. I hope he like teaching classes for ATT. This has got to seriously put him at the bottom of the screwed the pooch list. Akiyama is the best 185 pounder out there, put him against Fedor, Silva, GSP, and BJ PENN all at once he beat Kang he deserves it.

Not really but I wonder how many of these comments we will get from this. I hate when people think a fighter can not loose. Sorry I like Kang and I am just waiting for the overrated, overhyped, Akiyama is the MMA god post. I still think Silva beats Kang, but that is just my 2 cents worth….

“Manhandling Kang?” “Akiyama outboxing Kang?”

…what fight are you guys watching. Kangs striking was crisp, his leg kicks were landing perfectly. He opened a cut with a jab,on the bridge of his nose, that was no big deal. Other than that, I thought Kangs standup was far better. He got caught, that’s about it. I’ll take Kang, 9 out of 10 fights with Akiyama.

Akiyama’s standup looked terrible.

I’d definately score that round in favor of Kang. I didnt say Kang was dominating Akiyama, just that he was clearly winning it. You can’t simply say that because Akiyama bloodied him that swings the round in his favor. Yes damage counts but it doesnt trump the other factors to be considered when scoring a round. Those leg kicks Kang delivered were extremely solid, completely disturbing Akiyama’s foundation. Kang was definately the aggressor for the majority of the round while Akiyama did more countering than initiating. I’ll definately be watching the fight again & I’ll try to be as objective as possible (I encourage you to do the same) but I remember Kang landing most of the punches. I’m not afraid of being wrong so I’ll recant if necessary but I’m just calling it how I saw it.
