“Cheick Kongo, who defeated Mirko CroCop in September, is most likely next [for Tim Sylvia], though the possibility of a bout with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira also exists.”
– Kevin Iole at Yahoo!Sports.com backpedals on a report prior to UFC 77 that the winner of the bout between Tim Sylvia and Brandon Vera would face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the vacant heavyweight title sometime in early 2008. “The Maine-iac” earned a unanimous decision win over “The Truth” this past weekend at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This doesnt surprise me at all.
Tim Syliva vs Kongo
Big Nog gets the winner for the vacant title shot.
Vera vs Gonzaga ..can be in the mix too.
Gonzaga vs Brock Lesnar ???
Can anybody read this as anything other than a way to put as many opponents as possible between Sylvia and the title?
I think Sylvia would beat Nog much the same way he beat Vera, so I’m not at all surprised Dana wants to prevent that from happening.
I am not so sure that Sylvia would beat Nog. Nog has excellent boxing skills and is clearly the best BJJ guy in the division. The only two people who can beat Nog are Fedor and Couture. Being as niether one of them fights in the UFC, I dont see anyone dashing Nog’s title hopes.
I say Gonzaga or Vera vs. Big Nog and Sylvia vs. Kongo. Winner of those fight eachother for the title. Understandably if it becomes Vera vs. Tim again it could be a boring ass fight but If it was true that Vera did break his hand in the first round then it could be a completely different second match up. Vera was landing some nice shots and seemed to turn the heat up in the 2nd round but you could definately tell something was wrong because that was not the Vera ive seen in the past. He also may come up with a new gameplan to defeat Sylvias bullshit holding the entire time. Either way I would love to see the Matchup of Vera or Gonzaga face Big Nog.
What about
Silvia vs. Kongo
Nog vs. Arlovski
Winners fight for title?
Who cares they are all boring fighters…Even big Nog has lost it.
This is just plain ridiculous. What does Dana think is going to happen, someone is just going to come in and KO everyone in the division in the first round, and that a 1st round KO is the only way that you can earn yourself a title shot? That’s just BS. How long does he want to wait before crowing a new HW champ? They should get that belt around someone’s waist asap. SYlvia vs Big Nog is just fine with me, especially after seeing what the Truth is made of. So if its not Timmy vs Nog for the belt, what will it be Kongo vs Nog for the belt? Both of them have done way less in the UFC than Timmy. The only thing that I can think of is that he is planning on having Brock Lesnar fight for the belt. If thats the case, Dana officially lost his mind and needs to get out of here. Speaking of Brock, I wonder if Eddie Sanchez was contacted yet for his next fight in the octagon?
i bet if vera won he would have got the title shot, they changed cause sylvia is a boring fighter and no one wants a boring match they should just have kongo vs big nog for the title belt
obviously Dana wants Tim to beat Kongo to win the title so there can be a Syvia vs Big Nog title fight instead of a Big nog vs Kongo title fight. It’s just easier to market.
Vera vs cro cop! would be a amazing striking contest. noo one likes sylvia because he is soooo boring him fighting a big exiting fighter like kongo mightwork though…
Sylvia was working much more than Vera, he could have done more in the clinch but he was still pressing the action. Big Nog looks slow as hell and I dont think he stands a chance against either Congo or Sylvia unless he can get it to the ground. Gonzanga is definatley in the mix and a fight against Vera would be awesome. But I am sure Vera will get ANOTHER fish to please his nuthugger fan base, perhaps a blind guy.
Vera was the one who wanted to clinch because he broke his hand.
I thought it was weird for Tim to call out Cheick Kongo after the fight.
I still think that Gonzaga and Big Nog are the best HWs right now.

I like the idea of Sylvia fighting Kongo and Nog fighting someone and the winners fight for the belt. I don’t see why or how Big Nog gets a title fight after his lack luster performance against the Crazy Horse. Nog should fight a contender (I don’t consider Herring a contender because I barely put him in top 20) and if he wins that then he fights for the belt. Does anyone else agree with me?
Why is Nog getting a free pass to the belt? Nog should fight GG, Gonzaga, AA, or Lesnar (lol) first.
Who cares they are all boring fighters…Even big Nog has lost it.
The whole heavy weight division is boring, especially with Randy gone and Cro Cop sucking. I cant wait to see BROCK LESNAR, THE NEXT BIG THING in the UFC!!!!
You guys are forgeting that it was Big Tim that was set on calling out Kongo after the fight.
Arlovski won’t fight again without a new contract. He won’t get anywhere near a title shot til that’s resolved.
I have a feeling that Kongo is going to decapitate Sylvia with a series of punches.
Kongos striking is on a whole other level than Sylvia. I don’t see Sylvia trying to take him down either. Kongo is everything that Sylvia used to be and more. No being tentative and waiting for a decision with Kongo.
Time to step your game up Tim, or you’re going to sleep.
Sylvia would not destroy Big Nog. It would be a hell of a fight that would probably go to the judges if it stayed standing. If it goes to the ground, it’s likely Big Nog will submit Sylvia just like Arlovski did. Is it just me or does anybody else want to see Arlovski back in the mix?
Kongo on the other hand might rock Sylvia.

I definately agree. Since Kongo’s UFC debut his striking has been on display & I said from day 1 that it’s strong enough to one day put him in contender status. The glaringly obvious problem with Kongo is that his Rolling is absolutely trash. Now, with that being said his skills have increased drastically since his loss to Carmello but on a scale of 1-10, he’s only increased to maybe a 4 in grappling. That’s just enough to keep himself out of trouble with the Silvia’s, AA’s & CC’s but he’ll be outmatched with the Nog’s & GG’s of the division.
If I were Kongo’s trainer, I’d have him focus heavily on Wrestling & BJJ Defense.
arlovski needs to get in the title picture quickly as if sylvia gets the belt back hes not getting a shot anytime soon
im suprised dana didnt make sylvia vera for the title it deserved to be a 5 round fight
its quite strange at the moment as all the divisions are in a bit of a mess and dont really have #1 contenders who jump out at you
they really need to start thinking it out better
having chuck face jardine was a bad idea
dana slated pride for allowing wanderlai to face henderson
this is possibly worse as it rejeopardised the fight even tho ufc had both of them under contract
its such a shame randy retired
randy vs nog now for the title would of made sense
then kongo vs sylvia for #1 contender
dont know where vera and arlovski can go
possibly LHW

I agree. Loser gets abolished from the HW division! For CC, that means retirement, for Vera a move to LHW. After the loss, Vera needs two wins against top 5 heavies before he gets a title shot IMO. And this is coming from a Vera fan.
when was the last time we saw an exciting Silvia fight?
So why do we have to wait so long for Nog & winner of Sylvia/Kongo for a title bout? Cant we just put Arlovski vs Nogeira? This is ridiculous they cut Arlovski out of the UFC. Now that there is an opening at the top of the heavyweights his name still isnt brought up at all. UFC needs some better management. They got the marketing bit down quite alright, but everything else is a little off if you ask me in every aspect.
Of course dana wants to put more fights between sylvia and the title. Sylvia isn’t marketable. Despite the fact he has 16 or so (T)KO’s to his name, his last four fights have been decisions. Arlovski 3 (boring), Monson (boring), Couture (thank god), and now Vera (again, boring except the few times he threw his hands).

lol I probably should have read your post before I posted, because I agree with you 100 percent Wolfslair. what I dont understand is:
so AA gets the shit end of the stick for beating Werdum because he did not finish and it was “boring”

I have an idea:
“lets dig up Shamrock and have him fight Tito for the 10th time and then give Tito a shot at LHW belt”.
i think it would make more sense to have kongo fight nogureia with the winner of that fight moving on to fight tim for the belt. because in my opinion nogueira didnt prove ready to challenge for a title in his only fight in the ufc.

M-1 Announces their CEO and news in regards to Fedor _ props MMA Weekly
In a press release on Monday, it was announced that the newly formed Sibling Sports, LLC is the company behind M-1 Global, LLC, a new mixed martial arts company believed to be the new home of highly sought after free agent Fedor Emelianenko.
It was also revealed that Monte Cox, a longtime veteran of the mixed martial arts industry, was named President and CEO of M-1 Global.
Though not stated in the release, it is commonly believed that M-1 Global will, at a press conference on Monday, be announced as the organization that has signed Emelianenko, currently ranked as the No. 1 heavyweight fighter in the world by MMAWeekly.com.
“We are excited to announce the formation of Sibling Sports, LLC and our new mixed martial arts organization M-1 Global,” said Mitchell Maxwell, President and CEO of Sibling Holdings. “Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in America. It is the boxing of the 21st century.
“We have pulled together a world-class group of people to lead our new organization. Our new management team has extensive mixed martial arts experience in Europe, Russia, Asia and the U.S.,” he continued.
“We are pleased to announce Monte Cox as our CEO. Monte has been recognized as one of the most influential persons in mixed martial arts in the world today. He is generally considered one of the world’s most successful fight managers, having produced a record seven world champions in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and built an impressive team of nearly 60 world-class competitors.”
“It’s exciting,” Cox told MMAWeekly.com. “I’ve accomplished almost everything a person can accomplish in MMA. I’ve managed world champions. I’ve take guys from the beginning of their careers and seen them grow, helping them along. I’ve run smaller shows. The one thing I haven’t done is I’ve never worked for a big show.
“All of us in MMA sit back and criticize and talk about how if it was us, we’d do it different. Well, now I have that opportunity.”
“I have been involved in mixed martial arts for almost 13 years. While I have been offered many other positions over the years, this is the first one that I have accepted,” said Cox. “I am elated to have the opportunity to work with Mitchell Maxwell and the great team of managers he has been able to assemble. We look forward to continuing to move mixed martial arts into the mainstream, not only here in the U.S., but worldwide.
“We have developed an alliance with M-1 Mix Fight and we are honored to be working with Vadim Finkelchtein, Apy Echteld, and Joost Raimond. They have many years of experience managing fighters and staging events in Europe, Russia, and Asia. Rounding out our new management team are Bob Clark, currently serving as President of Sibling Theatricals, and Brian Patton, a CPA, and business manager for MMA legend Matt Hughes

Well, AA never looked particularly good against Werdum.
Meanwhile, as much shit as Nog gets for that fight against Herring, that was basically two minutes of Nog ducking into a kick and recovering, and 13 minutes of Nog kicking Herring’s ass.
As for Lesnar, no chance he gets a fight against a guy as good as Gonzaga. I’m thinking they put Lesnar against Wellisch or McCully. Gonzaga’s next fight will be Arlovski, Werdum, or Mir.

i said it once a long time ago and i’ll say it again, it takes TWO fighters to make a boring fight. sylvia’s fight against randy wasnt boring because randy made it so.
If Vera didn’t break his hand he would have won. Tim’s punches weren’t really landing (even though he threw more). Whereas, Vera’s punches where more accurate.
Anyways, I vote for Chiek to whoop Tim’s ass and I can see him beating big Nog.
New Champ: Kongo
kongo and sylvia is going to be a great fight, kongo won’t be intimidated by sylvia’s size, those guys are gonna go at it…either way i think both guys don’t match up well with big nog, big nog will be the next champ…
I would like to see Brock come in and get dominated I’m not a fan.
if Brock fights anyone(almost anyone) in the ufc I’m going for his opponet.
Some people mainly wrestling fans think he is going to come in and murder the ufc heavyweight division.
I sincerly hope his first fight isn’t for the title for so many reasons.
As far as the vacant title if sylvia wants kongo I’m down with that.
If sylvia fights nog for the title I’m good with that as well
jus get the title around someones waist. A possible 2 vacant titles(light weight) I’m not down with.
These are the top contenders (in no specific order):
Arlovski
Sylvia
Kongo
Minotauro
Here are the guys who are coming off of losses but could challenge the title soon:
Vera (Didn’t look like himself against Sylvia but will probably come back better than ever)
Gonzaga (Was merely a victim of a great gameplan and perfect execution by Couture)
Monson (Was too short to beat Sylvia, but would do well against most other heavyweights)
These are the guys who could move up a weight class and be a force as a heavyweight:
Rampage (Strong enough; Good striker/wrestler)
Forrest (Great cardio/heart; huge for light heavyweight)
Machida (Much more technical than most heavyweights)
Liddell (Still a great fighter despite recent losses)
It is unlikely that any of the LHW’s will be moving up, so the most reasonable setup would probably be this:
Sylvia vs Kongo >
Big Nog vs Arlovski > Winners fight for Title
Vera vs Gonzaga for next #1 contender spot
I think Dana is hoping and praying that when randy comes back from filming he will be able to talk him into fighting again. That’s the only logical reason to keep the belt on hold so long. He’s expecting Couture to come back as Champion and have no need for a fight for the vacant ttile. Or he just hates Tim sylvia, and doesn’t want him to be champion.
Not a fan of lesner, not a fan of all the lesner is going to murder the ufc hw division talk(mostly by wrestling fans)ncaa credentials aside not an experianced mma fighter and not a fan of lesner possibly getting a title shot for his fist fight in the ufc.
If lesner fights anyone in the ufc(almost anyone) I’m going for his opponent.
If Sylvia wants Kongo I’m down with that, if it’s for the title I’m also good with that.
If Sylvia fights nog for the title I’m good with that too.
Jus get the title around someones waist I don’t want to see the possibilty of 2 vacant titles(lw)in the ufc.
Once again people want to say that Kongo deserves a title shot and Nogueira does not. Nogueira actually finished Cro Cop, Kongo did not. All you guys care about is how many fights they have in the UFC. No one should come into the UFC as one of the best fighters in the world and have to work their way up fighting nobodys. I’m surprised you guys weren’t saying Fedor shouldn’t be allowed to fight Randy cause he hadn’t proven himself yet lol. Kongo’s overrated and Sylvia is still underrated, no one gives him due respect. I like AA, and I’d be cool with seeing him fight Nog, but Nogueira is the guy to beat in the HW division right now and he has the strongest claim to a title shot. If I was Tim Sylvia, I would have called out Nogueira, but he called out Kongo instead, maybe he thinks he’ll need another win to gain a title shot and thinks he can beat Kongo.
As for Brock Lesnar, I hope they give him someone very tough for his first fight. I want to see if he can really make it in MMA, I think he can do well because he is so powerful, but it will be interesting to see how much his lack of experience will hurt him. A lot of people compare the UFC to the WWE, and this isn’t going to help things at all, but I think it’s ironic that everyone doubts Brock Lesnar, when there are guys like Tim Sylvia, who are not these graceful, Bruce Lee type MMA artists that everyone seems to think will demolish Brock, they’re just big dumb guys that use their size to pound people into the ground. That’s what Brock is, that’s what Tim is, even Randy Couture. People were treating Koscheck like he was god before he lost to GSP, talking up his wrestling, and now Brock comes around and wrestling isn’t enough. Shenanigans!

And at the same time if you really watched Big Nog vs. Heath you would see that Heath clearly won while Big Nog’s performance was unimpressive. It was almost like Heath let Nog get a win.
I think the UFC would do it’s best to prevent a Gonzaga/Nog title fight. Neither of them can speak a word of English and are about as marketable as toe jam, so stop dreaming. These UFC “matchups” are quickly becoming more hype, less fight!!!
All this talk of the heavyweight division being “stacked” is nonsence. After the departure of Randy Couture the depth of the division went right out the window. There hasn’t been a convincing win by a heavyweight contender. Big Nog was unimpressive vs Herring, Kongo was unimpressive against Cro Cop, and Sylvia was unimpressive vs Vera. On a side note a side note if Vera drops to lightheavyweight look out that division would be even more stacked.
Although I dont think Brock will get to fight the top HWs soon, I would love to see him get beat up. I love watching big muscleheads take a beating. Any one of the top HWs would tach Brock a lesson, Tim, GG, AA, CC.
If they need a main event for UFC 80 it will likely be Big Nog vs Kongo for the title because Sylvia won’t be ready by then.

The last I heard Jake had some kind of back problems that was career threatening. They should wait as long as possible before crowning a new champ and pray Randy comes back. Every guy on that list is either a boring piece of shit(Kongo & Sylvia), or they can’t beat the boring pieces of shit(Cro Cop & Vera).
I know people like to hate on Tim for being “a boring fighter”, but a lot of the hugging from the last fight was initiated by Vera. So much for him being an exciting fighter; I also think the way the matches have been refereed is as much to blame as anything. Just break up the damned hugfests against the cage if nothing is going on. Personally I think Tim is just as deserving of a title shot as Nogueira, maybe even moreso considering Nog’s lackluster showing against Herring. Even though I much prefer the stand up game to the ground work, I can still appreciate Nogueira’s ground fighting abilities. It’s just that I can’t help but wonder how the hell he fell right into title contention with a performance against Herring that was mediocre at best, while the former champion beats the guy that people are all nuthugging over about being a future star and Tim still hasn’t earned another title shot?!?!? I guess the randomness of earning title shots shouldn’t be a big shock considering Serra is just now set for his first defense–against Hughes when it would seem that GSP would be more deserving of that fight. I guess it’s easier to promote a fight between two guys that can’t stand each other than rather than giving the former champs rematches to the guys that took their belts. It just seems like getting a title shot anymore has much less to do with earning it, and a lot more to do with promotional aspects. I think it’s a big crock of shit to be perfectly candid.

I dont think Arloski fights in the ufc any more, not positive but i think Dana fired him.
Maybe Big Tim is thinking, screw the belt for now, I want to beat up everybody the fans like. Timmy seems to be excepting the dark horse role as the villian. I notice he’s a lot more comfortable and articulate in his interviews… sure he can’t pronounce “Cheick” correctly, but hey he responded with a funny remark..”I can call him whatever I want”… which drew laughs from the press.
Can fans stop booing Tim? I believe this is not fair at the end of day he is a fighter that once everybody wanted to see. I cannot understand why people do this to him. That hurts. After being fighing for 15 minutes again people boo you. I will never do this to a fighter. It is true that sometimes his fights are boring ,but this one wasn’t.These people train so hard for a fight that winning or losing, they still have to get their recognition.Every UFC fighter deserves my respect and that is what I do everytime they fight. They put on a show or at least they try.

Where’s Jake O’Brian???
i say have a tournament all in 2 or 3 events
Yes that would be great if they can have a tournament.
Something that gets lost in this whole thing is that Sylvia was the champ. I can’t stand to watch him fight. He doesn’t draw fans, hell i don’t think that he even has any fans, he is totally unmarketable and really doesn’t have that good of skills. He should be a beast at his size. He throws the most awkward punches i’ve ever seen. throws them from his chest. could you imagine if he had a decent boxing stance and threw those shots from his head with a nice snap to them??? I am not a WWE fan but i really think that Lesnar could take Sylvia. He is the most accomplished wrestler in the UFC now that he has joined. More accomplished than Randy, Koscheck, Lindland etc. If those guys could make the transition to MMA why is everyone doubting that he can?? Because he was a WWE wrestler? That doesn’t cheapen anything in my opinion. His wrestling skills are far more superior than anyone and let’s face the facts here. If you are an NCAA wrestler and school is done, what are your options as far as a career go?? He needed to make $$$ so why not take a big payday with Vince McMahon? I’m sure he needs to hone his skills a little more but at the same time if Eddie Sanchez, Elvis Sinosic and Jorge Gurgel are in the UFC… He has a hell of a lot more skill than them, and would draw a far bigger crowd. Could you imagine his GNP!!! anyway i know a lot of people will disagree but this is just my opinion.
And one last thing. If Tim Sylvia wants to get back up from a takedown, instead of looking at the referee and complaining maybe he should try to get out of it and fight his way back to his feet. This was his 2nd fight in a row that i saw this. He did it in the Couture fight as well. He is the only fighter i have ever seen do this. What a loser. I hope Kongo knocks his head off and i never have to watch another boring fight with him again. He keeps calling out fighters after his decision wins and saying that he is gonna knock them out. You might wanna throw some punches than Tim.
winner of Big Nog vs Gonzaga vs winner of Sylvia vs Kongo for the title is my ideal situation. Also a fight between Cro Cop and Vera, if he doesn’t decide to go to lightheavyweight, to determine the next title shot.
Cro Cop doesnt deserve a number 1 contenders match he lost 2 fights in a row the 1st in a #1 contender match against an opponent that beat him at his own game, WITH A KICK. he has to prove himself again i see Cro Cop at the bottom of the list

Silvia vs. Kongo
Nog vs. Arlovski
Winners fight for title?
That’s exactly what should happen…there’s no way Nog should be getting a title shot after 1 fight in the UFC.

make it like go over the course of 2 or 3 events and then in a 3rd or 4th, depending on how many to get 2 finalists, have the TITLE FIGHT.
or go back to how UFC used to be and have them fight a few times in 1 night
