Finally (sorta).
The mega bout between former champions Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva for which mixed martial arts fans have clamored for years is going to go down at UFC 79 on December 29, according to a report from Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com.
Both light heavyweights have apparently verbally agreed in principle to clash at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on New Year’s Eve weekend.
Here’s the actual snip:
“Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva is now verbally agreed upon by both sides to take place on 12/29 in Las Vegas.”
Meltzer is usually dead-on with his inside information. In addition, this report echoes recent statements from John Hackleman that his fighter is penciled in to face the “Axe Murderer” once and for all.
Nothing, of course, is set in stone until the bout agreements are signed and an official announcement comes from the Zuffa front office.
But this pretty much looks like a done deal.
Rejoice.

Wow , Pretty awesome. It might be an X rated fight since the last time they met Silva wanted to F— Chuck!
YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally.
wanderlei walks straight onto a haymaker.chuck by ko first round.
AWWW YEAH!!!! Wandi second round KO!
Yes!!!! I think both fighters still have a lot left and it makes for a great match up. I don’t think it’s a good idea for the Axe Murderer to have his first match in the cage against Chuck, but the way both guys fight, it’s going to be a war. I’m pulling for Wandy.
hey even if you guys dont agree with my prediction if this fight goes ahead it will be THE biggest mma fight EVER.Ill be f ckin buzzing when they sign.
At last, the battle of the two almost has-beens.
I’m thinking Chuck loses the decision and retires on a three loss streak.

i bet this will be the biggest grossing mma ppv ever.not bad for a pair of has beens.
I’m extremely curiously what the purse for their fight will be with Chuck’s two loses in a row. I bet you anything he still gets at least $500,000 again - win or lose.
curious*
so i wonder if WS wins does he get a shot at Rampage. and what happens if CL wins does he get a shot or do we get to see tito and chuck three. I just want to know who gets the shot at rampage first FG, DJ, WS.
Wandy by (T)KO
Halleluja!!!!!!!
This fight better happen! Im sick of talking about it and hoping for it! Just get it done already.
Chuck will go back to his counterpunching style and wanderlei will charge at him like a bat out of hell. Either fighter can win this fight. I have been wondering how chuck will deal with the tai clinch that has destroyed many top fighters around the world such as Rampage twice. I cant remember the last time that an opponent of chuck has even tried to tai clinch him, so I really have no idea if chuck is equipped to deal with it. I dunno, if wanderlei can get a hold of the back of chucks hands and start unleashing nasty knees to the face and the body of Liddell, it could be three losses in a row for CHUCKY boy!
On the other hand, wanderlei’s super agressive fighting style could cause him to walk right into one of Chuck’s devestating counter punches and end the fight!
I have NO predictions on this fight, all I know is that it better happen at UFC 79. Die hard fans have been talkiing and drooling over this fight for like 4 or 5 years…. Time to throw down!!!!
Its so refreshing to see a great rivelary between chuck and wanderlei that isn’t being blown up by phony annomosity (like Tito always builds up his fights, WWE style).
Chuck n Silva have a professional rivalry. To great fighters, that want to prove themselves against the best. Thats it! No phonnie hatred and or annomosity, just to proffesionals wanting to prove that they are the best by testing themselves against the other.
Tito Take notes you WWE clown. If you actually performed in the cage, and actually step up to fight “world class” fighter, you wouldnt have to act like a WWE star and make all your fights personal just to promote them.
Correction to my above statement:
I ment to say, if wanderlei can get a hold of the back of chucks head (tai clinch style) and start unleashing nasty knees to the face and the body of Liddell, it could be three losses in a row for CHUCKY boy!

If Wandy wins… i want him to get a shot at Rampage so New&Improved Rampage can get a bit of Revenge… great theme.
And these guys don’t like each other… it’s gonna be a REAL fight!

yeah i agree if silva wins its a title shot.if chuck wins no way they will do chuck/page 3.wanderleis a class fighter briiliant to watch but comes straight forward no angles throwing leather. but he is tailor made for chuck.chuck by ko
Okay, take your bet, which fighter gets injured during training before this fight?
Type 1 for Chuck Liddell
Type 2 for Wanderlei Silva.
BEcause knwoing our luck, that is what will happen.
I think Wandi will beat Chuck..than get the title shot. He beat Page 2X..the third time around. It should be a Classic fight to watch..but I don’t see Wandi running through Page like he did before.
Who has more at stake here if they lose? I say if Wandy loses he still has a lot going for him in the UFC. But if Chuck loses I think there’s going to be an even bigger question mark for his future - despite the fact that both fighters have lost 2 in a row. This is a must win for Chuck. Then again so was the jardine fight…
If either gets injured it will be Silva, we all know Chuck doesn’t train hard enough to. Unless slipping off of a barstool counts
That’s okay it’s what we like about chuck he’s a regular guy out there fighting with a beer gut.
Lovin all the Chuck hating going on here. Six months ago you all loved him…now, because he’s no longer champ, all the turncoats start talking trash.
I can’t wait for this fight…and in my opinion it’s a real toss up. I can see both fighters winning (under separate circumstances), but will definitely be pulling for Lidell.
Wow it’s finally gonna happen, maybe. Well if it does give the winner of this fight to Houston Alexander, lets see what he is really made of. It would be interesting to see him fight wandy because they both fight well from the clinch. After wany’s budddy (shogun) gased like he did I hope he has his cardio up.

I couldn’t have said it better.
Excellent post John. I too, cannot predict a winner to this fight at this time. My heart tells my to pick Wandi (who I’ll be rooting for), but my brain is still 50/50. Wandi can run right into a counter punch at any time. I think if he’s able to get Chuck in his clinch, its nighty night for the ol’ Chuckster. Can you imagine, 3 losses in a row for Liddell? Who would he fight next? Bisping?
HOWEVER, I am not chalking this fight up as a definate at this point. NOT until I see this announced on UFC.com will I believe it. I have been teased with this fight about 101 times too many to believe rumors. Yes, this is the surest sounding rumor so far, but its official once the bout agreement has been signed.

Do not curse this match Mr.NC 17. If one of them gets hurt now, I’m blaming you. lol
im still not going to believe it til i see it on ufc.com… they are playing with our heads…dont believe the hype
this fight and the hughes vs serra i have been dying to see,
i am glad they got this done, i really don’t see chuck losing 3 in a row, he should come out with fire in his eyes, kill type attitude, but saying that i won’t be surprised if silva knocks him out as least it doesn’t go the the judges. if chuck loses i think he will retire, i don’t think dana would cut him if he lost 6 in a row, chuck lidell is their money marketer just as hughes, ortiz and couture.
thank god the fight is finally happening just less hype

Couldnt agree more sir,all these so called fans, we call them glory hunters in Scotland!! Ridiculous the amount of abuse directed at liddell, i just hope that he reproduces what we all know he has in his armour, hope this goes ahead before its too late. Im also rooting for the ICEMAN!! Great fight tho!!

I second that. I’m not even thinking about this fight… not till they’re both in the octagon… love to see it,but not holding my breath
I’m not getting excited until I hear official confirmation that they’ve signed contracts. This fight has been yanked from under us so many times, so I’m not getting my hopes up right now.
With Randy in Silva’s corner, Chuck will lose three in a row. I like Chuck, and I used to think he could win this fight. But Randy will have the right game plan for Silva and he will pretty much destroy Chuck. Chuck and John will continue to think Chuck doesn’t need to modify his style and the result will be his ass being handed to him.

I dont think so. In this sport, like any sport, you have your ups and downs. I think that with all Chuck has done for the UFC, he will be welcome to fight there until he doesnt want to anymore.

Anyway, i’ll be rooting for Chuck. He needs this win more than Wanderlei right now. It’s tough losing in the Octagon in front of the UFC crowd. If Wanderlei loses, it won’t be a big deal. regular folks probably wont even know he’s coming off 2 losses in his Octagon debut in a long time. But everybody pretty much knows Chuck’s lost 2 in a row.
Anyway, if Wandy wins it’s still gonna be a GREAT fight. Rampage says “I would love to fight Wanderlei and Shogun at the same time. Anybody that beat me, come on; let’s see if you could do it again” …haha AWESOME!
Got that quote from FightHype: http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content1090.html
The fight does happen at UFC 79, round one and two think forrest/bonnar 1, 3:17 into the 3rd round Chuck hits him with a right and ko’s Wandy.
Wandi Couture = Retired Iceman.

Randy will have the game plan to get silva knocked out, just like he did in his last two fights against chuck.
Before the Jardine fight, I thought this match-up looked good for Chuck, but now I’m a little worried because Chuck doesn’t fight well when he’s scared. Chuck has to change his outlook, come down off superstar mountain and start acting like a fighter lol. I’m still a Liddell fan, I’ve wanted this fight for a long time and I hope they both bring their A game. That’s what we should all hope for.
It’s about time, they’ve been talking about this fight for what 3 years now? I just hope this fight is enough motivation to see the old Chuck once again, I want to see him show up in peak condition to fight someone besides Tito.
I don’t know… i just have visions of the old vitor belfort vs w. silva fight…
i hope it doesn’t go like that.
It’s about time!
Chuck will beat him down (again)
Chuck 2nd round KO
RANDY C. just quit, check out thefightnetwork.com they just posted it, crazy stuff………… all because of fedor it said

My friend, there will be NO descicion in this fight lol!
I would like to see the fight but honestly Chuck to me should retire and Silva should be fighting someone else like Hendo, ortiz or Lyoto Machida. If Silva can’t pull out a win in his next fight then maybe he needs to think about retiring. I like Silva but if he looses then maybe those roid stories are true.

I agree, I think the safest bet is that one of them is going to get KTFO.
The feel is not anti-Iceman, but more disappointment in what was many people’s favorite fighter. Unfortunately Chuck has given an impression; wrongly or rightly, that he does not need to change anything and can do what he has done over the years. But things change and fighters improve and change and he needs to modify his regiment. He only needs to look to Couture and see how he has evloved his game. The late night partying, the same trainer and his age is reflected in the way he has fought. It may be hubris, but if Chuck does not evolve then the sport will pass him by.
Silva should bring some KY if he wants to aF Chuck, Silva always looked like a rappiest.
No dis respect to these two great fighters, but Randy Couture’s departure overshadows this in my opinion by far. We were all caught up in when is chuck and wandy gonna fight while the ufc lets one out of the two best fights in the history of the sport diss apear. I honestly was more looking foward to Randy and Fedor. Chuck and Wandy better be a guarentee now. If its not, Joe Silva and Dana White better find another job.
i agree randy is a loss, i dont agree however it is better fight than liddell silva!! Randy should fight rampage, he needs an opponent anyway, i know randy has retired but it would be a great fight! Liddell to ko silva in rd 2 devastating punch combo i say!!!!!!
With Randy in Silva’s corner I’d go with Silva on this one. BUT you have to admit Silva has almost always looked, and acted like he was on steroids for his fights. Let’s see if WS was living off steroids in PRIDE like Shogun/Fat Nog.

In no way is Wandy a has been. The guy held the belt for what, 5 or 6 yrs ,loses one title defense and he is a has been.Yeah,he got ko’d by Mirko as well but Mirko is a monster. Before we pass judgement on Wanderlai I think we need to see him in at least one fight in the UFC.
I hope Chuck knocks that dude the fck out and screams around the ring like b4. He needs that fighter spirit back. I remember reading that he painted his toenails pink one time just because he could according to him. He went Hollywood so now that people are treating him like shit again maybe he’ll man up and lose that gut and become a real figther again.
Wandy will kick the crap out of Chuck’s ribs unless Chuck will take him down, which he probably won’t.
chuck by second round KO
can’t beat jardine - can’t even compete against wandi - this fight is a frickin hoax
Chuck will win even if randy is in silva’s corner chuck is a counter puncher and if he comes straight forward for chuck, chuck will catch him just like randy, chuck wont lose 3 in a row he has the fire in him now
I believe Chuck is more skilled than Silva. The problem is that he is very stubborn, and chooses not to adapt his style or add wrinkles in his game. Even though he’s trained with Randy, he’s nowhere near the wrestler Randy is, so he can’t really use Randy’s gameplan. He will probably follow the Jardine blueprint on how to beat Chuck. Think about it, Wandy can do everything Jardine can do and more. If Chuck doesn’t adjust, then he’ll lose.
i love the chucks washed up talk and then in the same breath randy is one of the best of all time. chuck is up 2 to 1 on randy last time i checked. i guess there are excuses for everything. how bout a chuck vs randy 4?? loser retires for good lol
wow i hope Wandelei exposes that run away bitch
chuck by 2nd round ko i hope or else its retirement time.imagine looking at a fight card and seeing chuck liddell vs someone and under it it says may not be broadcasted.i cant see that happening.this is chucks last stand.im still pullin for my boy chuck
OH SHI-
I’m rooting for both of them. This fight should’ve happened ages ago… if chuck loses, i think hes going to retire. ;\
Yes!!!! I think both fighters still have a lot left and it makes for a great match up. I don’t think it’s a good idea for the Axe Murderer to have his first match in the cage against Chuck, but the way both guys fight, it’s going to be a war. I’m pulling for Wandy.
ahahhHhaha.
You don’t think it’s a good idea for Silva to have his “first match in the cage” against Chuck, eh? Really? Why don’t you consider these facts first:
1. Click this link. http://youtube.com/watch?v=EXvTU0OGa3k
Now where did that take place? Tito beat Wanderlei in UFC 25. So now you think Wandy’s going to beat Chuck why? This is the kind of fight that I wouldn’t bet on. Both men have instant KO power, either one could win if they place their punches correctly. Wanderlei, however, has impressive BJJ skills, which I don’t believe Chuck would be able to defend if this goes to the ground. Silva’s a powerful dude, and even though Liddell’s takedown defense is superb, how shocking of an image would it be to see Silva performing a GnP, armbar, or triangle choke against Chuck? We’ve never seen Chuck Liddell’s guard. We probably still won’t since I believe both men will slug, so everything is speculation. Either man can get caught, and one will. Come on, this one won’t go the distance. Standing, I favor Chuck, simply because he’s a counterpuncher and he may be able to capitalize on Silva’s aggressiveness. If Silva is careful, closes the distance and utilizes knees like he did against Rampage, and/or manages to get it to the ground, I believe it’s a done deal. If he rushes Chuck like I think he will, the Iceman will make him pay.
2. It’s a great idea. It will sell, and MMA fans have wanted to see if for years. I take it you’re an MMA fan? What’s wrong with you? You should be dying to see this fight like everybody else. Who gives a rat’s ass about back-to-back losses and whatnot. Both fighters are still dangerous, let’s make em fight.
At last, the battle of the two almost has-beens.
I’m thinking Chuck loses the decision and retires on a three loss streak.
Has-beens? Even if that’s preceeded with the preemptive “almost”, you shouldn’t call either fighter a has-been anyway.
1. Chuck made a dumb mistake throwing that body punch from the outside against Rampage, and he got caught. Simple. Anyone eating that punch would have collapsed even worse than Chuck did. He barely lost his consciousness, and it even took 4 extra strikes for Big John McCarthy to call it a KO. The man still has an iron chin.
2. Chuck was outpointed by Jardine. Embarassing, yes but at least he wasn’t knocked out. You have to remember Liddell was the LHW champion for years, with 7 straight KO/TKO wins against top competition. He makes a mistake in one fight, and then loses a decision, and he’s a has-been? Hell no, Chuck wasn’t aggressive enough against Jardine, didn’t defend the leg kicks well, and quite simply, he should have made Jardine pay every time he attempted a kick. Why absorb all that damage? Another stupid mistake. Jardine also deserves credit for executing a perfect game plan.
3. Wanderlei Silva is coming off devastating losses, true. But he is a dangerous man. He was JUST signed to the UFC. His first fight after being signed and he’s a has-been? He’s a has-been the day some loser beats him, it’s never embarassing to lose to a guy like Henderson or Shogun, they’re world class fighters. In this case, back-to-back losses don’t completely discredit either fighter, they simply need to prove that they’re still hungry enough not to let it discourage them.
It’s going to be an awesome fight!
“I’m thinking Chuck loses the decision and retires on a three loss streak.”
What?? You really think they’re going to go at it for 3 rounds without a knockout? The Iceman and the Axe Murderer, both known for being devastating, aggressive strikers?!?! Their styles make a perfect match (fireworks!), it’s going to be a back and forth slugfest, someone’s bound to lose their consciousness!
I believe Chuck is more skilled than Silva. The problem is that he is very stubborn, and chooses not to adapt his style or add wrinkles in his game. You think Wanderlei Silva is going to follow the “Jardine blueprint” to beat Chuck?
Technically, he COULD, but in all likelihood, he won’t. That’s just not his style. Why’s he going to emulate someone he’s never heard of, someone who got a split decision over Chuck? WANDY WANTS A KO! This is the Axe Murderer of the elite Chute Box camp, my guess is that he’s not going to emulate anyone, much less Jardine.
Unlike Jardine, Wanderlei is not known for devastating leg kicks and for staying out of range or anything like that at all. He’s way different. He’s aggressive and he’s a striker just like Chuck is. He uses wild looping punches and effective BJJ and ground and pound to win his fights.
In this case, Chuck doesn’t really need to adjust. He needs to be hungry, and he needs to be the old Iceman, counterpunching and exploiting Wandy’s aggressiveness.
Chuck will win even if randy is in silva’s corner chuck is a counter puncher and if he comes straight forward for chuck, chuck will catch him just like randy, chuck wont lose 3 in a row he has the fire in him now
I think the fact that Randy is in Silva’s corner is significant. This could mean that Silva is learning some dirty boxing tricks, head movement, and Greco-Roman style techniques from the Natural.
The Natural is a genius in the octagon, a mastermind at devising winning strategies. The Iceman’s strategy has always been the same, he hasn’t changed a bit in years. Perhaps, just maybe, Randy’s teaching Silva to dodge the punches using superior head movement (something Randy has displayed in his last couple fights), then close the distance to use his Muay Thai clinch (which Silva is an expert with, just ask Rampage) to smother the Iceman and land some knees, let’s see how Chuck responds to that.
I think if that’s the case, Chuck’s going to get caught off guard, find himself up against the cage and basically between a rock and a hard place because that’s where dirty boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling are most effective. This is all just speculation of course, but think about it, why of all people would Silva choose Couture to train with? Randy’s not going to train him how to strike. Wandy already knows how to do that. He’s learning some of the Natural’s methods of course.
