Rich Clementi (28-12-1) is penciled in to fight Melvin Guillard (20-6-2) in a lightweight bout at UFC 79 on December 29, according to statements attributed to “No Love” via FiveOuncesofPain.com.
On the surface this doesn’t seem to be anything other than a typical mixed martial arts (MMA) showdown. Dig a little deeper, however, and there is a quite a bit of animosity between these two competitors.
In fact, Guillard allegedly sucker-punched Clementi earlier this year backstage at a smaller MMA show. The incident set of a firestorm in this Underground Forum thread, which included comments and background from Clementi.
A former contestant on season four of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Clementi recently submitted Anthony Johnson via rear naked choke at UFC 76: “Knockout” last month. He has had mixed results inside the Octagon since his appearance on the show (2-2) and will look to even up his overall record with the organization (2-3).
Prior to the rumored UFC 79 clash, Clementi is booked to fight Antoine Skinner under his own No Love Entertainment banner this upcoming weekend.
If this bout is legit it will mark the return of Guillard after serving a suspension for having an illegal stimulant (cocaine) in his system during a 27-second loss to Joe Stevenson at UFC Fight Night 9 back in April.
“The Young Assassin” was considered among the top fighters in the 155-pound division prior to the incident.

If I saw Rich Clementi walking around, I’d show him no love, as well, by bitch smaking him across the side of his ugly head. During thier fight, I actually expect much more of the same. Melvin hitting Clementi in the head, but this time repeatedly until the ref pulls him off.

i hope melvin has been using this nine month suspension to train some submission defense, he’s a great athlete with some awesome striking ability with hands and legs, but everyone knows his weakness and it usually gets exploited against a good fighter…i hope we see an improved melvin gulliard, if we do i expect him to stop rich clementi in either the first or second round…

Melvin was one of my favourite fighters till the cocaine incident. But I think if he was a real user he wouldn’t even of made it nine months (without money to support the habit) plus be anywhere near fight standard.
Hopefully he has trainned in BJJ, that would make him a threat against whoever he steps into the octagon against. The only thing holding back Melvins development is himself (more specifically his attitude). He needs to humble himself stop the big talk and work on his weaknesses.

You left out a key point here. It was determined that he used a substance to grease himself up because he appeared shiny in the taping of it. They rewatched the tape and determined he used something. So, its not really cut-and-dry.
If Melvin can figure out how to increase his cardio and improve his jujitsu game, he would be considered a contender. I think Clementi edged him out in the Spelling Contest.

I think that Melvin is going to beat the snot out of Clementi. I actually think that Clementi may have a hard time getting Melvin to the ground, where he could then look to submit him. In my opinion, Melvin is MUCH, MUCH stronger and has better wrestling. I agree with the people that said the Melvin needed to work on his BJJ and cardio during those 9 months off. Melvin has MUCH beter standup and is 1000 times more explosive. I see this fight ending in devastating KO fashion, with Melvin’s hand raised and Clementi still unconcious in the octagon.
Personally, I don’t care for cocaine, but it sure does smell good!
