ronaldo jacare souzaLooking to bolster its middleweight division, the UFC perhaps signed the most dynamic Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom on the planet, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza.

That’s the latest news from the Porto do Vale Tudo forums, which explains that an announcement was made at an Amazon Challenge event. In fact, Brazilian television even picked up the story, demonstrating just how highly regarded the talented grappler is in his country.

Jacare has a solid mixed martial arts record (5-1), but has never made it past the first round in any of those six fights. He has five submission wins to his credit during those contests.

The “Alligator” (Jacare translated) is a two-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion who placed second in the absolute division of the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) world championships, losing to Roger Gracie by submission (rear naked choke).

He also competed against UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture in a Professional Submission League grappling match last year, taking “The Natural” to a scoreless draw.

He may be the best Brazilian Ju Jitsu guy on the Planet! Excellent signing by the UFC. He may not be the biggest or strongest Middleweight fioghter, but so what? He placed second in the absolute division (No limit), he has grappled with Monsters (Couture) and has held his own!!!!!!

I would like to see him fight Travis Lutter, or Jason McDonald!

He didn’t just hold his own, he had Couture on the ropes the entire time. In fact, Pro Sub’s League doesn’t award points in the same way NAGA, Grapples Quest, or Abu Dhabi. So if you score that battle by any other rules system. Jacare wins bar none.

We’ll see how he’ll handle other top UFC middleweights, but I feel sorry for you if you think Jacare can’t handle ANYONE in the UFC with ease once the fight hits the ground. Jacare’s also got strong takedowns and very good wrestling. Excellent signing if true.

Jacare just recently fought Randy Couture in a Submission Wrestling match to a draw..Jacare is a BJJ beast..and add a good stand up coach..for an MMA transition..maybe not right away..but in some time he may be considered a top MW contender.
..For now he for sure adds some much needed spice to this MW divison.

When you can beat a Gracie with a broken arm people should take you seriously.

In this HL video it is sometimes hard to make out Jacare, he is the one not getting flung all over the place

Thanks to you guys helping out with a scouting report on this guy!

He sounds incredible and the small versions of Video I have seen of him, this guy looks insane. I just hope when he comes into the UFC, his cardio is up in tip top shape. Because we saw how Alberto Crane who is fantastic at BJJ came in and blew it because he had 0 cardio.

But he is a new fresh face in this division and I am extremely pumped to see him!

Very Very good signing the middleweight division getting better slowly but surely.

This is the most exciting non pride addition to the UFC fold that I can remember in a LONG time, this guy has out grappled the likes of Matt “the law” Lindland, gone through some feirce battles with Marcelo Garcia and Randy Couture. This is one of best grapplers in the world, and if you watch his MMA performances he’s not afraid to take a hit. WOW!!! the UFC has just warmed my cold and bitter heart. And BTW under most competitive submission grappling rules Jacare would have won against Randy. ADCC rules included.

Off topic but a quick question for you guys and Mania…If you’ve been to a UFC event you’ll know what I’m talking about here. There’s this amazing highlight reel they play just before they go live to get the crowd pumped up. The music is The Who’s Baba O’Riley. The question is has it ever been leaked onto the internet. It’s a discussion going on over in the Sherdog forum and someone said people keep trying to put it up on youtube but Zuffa keep taking it down. If that’s true then surely someone downloaded it using keepvid.com or something like that. Can anyone find it? It’s amazing.

he could easily become a contendor in the weak middleweight division. The guy is very strong and is pretty good with his takedowns. What worries me is his striking, I would love to see him work a bit with randy at extreme couture to work a bit on the holes he has in his mma.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Jacare is the only BJJ competitor to hold wins over both Marcelo Garcia and Roger Gracie.

Jacare not only has great jiu-jitsu, but he also has solid Judo. His takedowns are good. So I don’t think we’ll be seeing him going for sloppy takedowns and butt-scooting for the whole fight like some other fighters with a BJJ background.

I’m excited if the signing is true. Can’t wait to see him do that “alligator clap” in victory. Preferably over someone like Leben or Ed Herman. Hahah.

Man I have been waiting for this one for awhile. The best thing about Jacare’s jiu jits is that it is an attacking, offensive game like the one Rickson and Rolles use to use. You wont see him jumping guard in MMA…although, come to think of it, I can’t think of anyone in the Middleweight division who would want to be inside his guard, either.

I am a huge Couture fan, but in that grappling match Randy wasn’t going for anything. Jacare was the one constantly going for subs and Randy was just defending. And Randy has Jacare by about 45 lbs. I’m impressed that Randy was able to avoid getting subbed though.

Unless Travis Lutter knocks Jacare out on the feet, the “Michael Jordan of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu” (according to Goldie, hahah) is going to get subbed by this Jacare guy.

185 pounders watch out

JACARE is comin!!!!

Second best no-gi submission grappler on this planet ladies and gentleman.

For you guys who dont entirely know who he is, here is a short biography of the man:

Why did Ronaldo Souza, a.k.a. Jacaré, become the best Jiu-Jitsu fighter in 2005? The unadvised tend to look for the answer in the fighter’s recent past, probably in his preparation for the recent World Championships. A keener look, however, finds in the star’s childhood, a time when he didn’t even know what Jiu-Jitsu was, some factors determinant of the black-belt’s current success. Some even say that, at the exact moment he was conceived by his parents, Jaca already had one of the most important virtues for becoming the greatest name in Jiu-Jitsu last year: high quality genetics.

Owner of contusion-proof muscles, elastic strings, catlike reflexes, a lumbar that resembles hydraulic suspension mechanisms, ankles as thick as his calves, forearms strong as a jeep, Jacaré is no lab champion. He was born with all these potential resources, which have been lapidated in training all these years. That which gym-addicts try to achieve with anabolism, nature gave this descendant of blacks and Indians. The talent came as the tip.

But besides body and ability, a Jiu-Jitsu exponent must have true warrior spirit, which life has inserted in Jacaré’s life in strange ways, especially during the ASLE athlete’s childhood and adolescence. Fighting and living have always been synonyms for Ronaldo. Conditioned for bearing adverse situation since birth, he lived in poor areas of Espirito Santo until the age of 14, when he had to abandon his parents and run away to Northern Brazil: “I got into some heavy shit, crime and stuff, and went to live with my brother in Manaus,” Jacaré told Gracie Magazine in September 2003.

The stranger got around as he could in Manaus, he worked even as a car watcher before getting acquainted with martial arts at 16, when he began training the judo-like Jiu-Jitsu of master Henrique Machado. Dedicating to a sport in order to overcome the difficulties of a tempestuous youth turned Jacaré into a man with an obstinate soul. He learned in practice the need to have willpower in life, of struggling for one’s desires, among other teachings that many fighters know but in theory.

Any one who trains BJJ and has studied Jacare, knows his positions and submissions are the tightest and most painful to go through. His arm bars are ridiculous-tight and nasty, his chokes not only cut off the flow of blood they make you feel like your head is going to explode in 2 seconds, and everything comes at you from obscene angles. I believe he wears Koral gi’s just because they bite and tear through your skin easier. That is why his nickname is “Jacare” which means alligator in Portugese, cause he gets ahold of you and rips you apart. This man will do anthing to win. You may have heard of guys who wont tap, they would rather break their arm or get choked out. Well, he is not that guy, he will and has broken his own arm on PURPOSE to escape a submission from the GREAT, ROGER GRACIE to win the Mundials, and also fought for another minute with a broken arm to win. When I train I look up to all BJJ competitors in the world, but only a select few are at the top, and Jacare is one. Just the fact that a BJJ expert of his caliber is signed by the UFC makes that whole division have to rise up yet another step. I cant wait!

Enough with everyone talking about Randy Couture against this guy. Randy Couture is older then dirt. That’s great that he’s 25-30 lbs heavier but bjj/grappling is something that Jacare grew up with. The guy is a freak but don’t point out his performance against Randy as a major supporting reason why he is as good as he is. And time will only tell if the guy has any sort of chin. You’d hope he’s at least been tested in sparring sessions to find that out.

Grappling:
“No other fighter in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been more dominating in worldwide competitions.”
MMA:
If Jacare develops his stand up defense & striking half way to the level of his grappling. It is possible that he will be virtually unstoppable in the middle weight division.
