Kazuhiro NakamuraKazuhiro Nakamura tested positive for marijuana in the aftermath of his unanimous decision loss to Ryoto Machida at UFC 76: “Knockout” over the weekend, according to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

Perhaps that explains all the bizarre pre-fight antics.

The Japanese PRIDE FC veteran — who was making his Octagon debut — was fined $500 and suspended for three months.

According to the CSAC report the other 17 fighters in action at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., all tested negative for drugs of abuse such as marijuana, heroin, etc.

Test results for anabolic and masking agents, however, are still pending.

I read a translated interview earlier today. He sounds like it happened during training — not in the fight. Doesn’t sound serious.

Well,, who really cares, its Nakamura.

I dont think professional atheletes should be taking drugs at all, but hey, you get caught if you do and that is good.

The problem with pot tests is that residual metabolites can stay in the system for months (as opposed to days for most hard drugs).

If he was actuvely under the influence I’d think he was cheating (getting the benefit of the anesthetic effect / improved ability to withstand pain). However if he smoked a few joints a month or two before the fight - who cares

If anyone heard the reported values I’d be interested in knowning?

I didnt find the fights boring at all. They were all very technical and I think if you understand what they are doing, you can appreciate the skill it takes to do what they do. Thats why I am a Machida fan. Everyone says his fights are boring. I can only imagine that you probably thought that was the most boring fight of the night, but its not all about beating the shit out of people and knocking them out. This is a sport.

So true. At least Diaz has something to offer as well. He is mos def an a level fighter and a potential champion against any given opponent wearng a belt, imho. He has some of the best bjj in the game and those short little testing jabs that do not look like anything until then end of his matches and the fighters face is all swelled up and cutting.

I don’t see why they even test for it. It isn’t a performance enhancing drug, no matter what that idiot Alamo might have you believe. At least the punishment is pretty much nonexistant. $500 isn’t much, and a 3 month suspension isn’t a punishment at all. He’d probably wait that much before his next fight anyway.

I thought the Machida/Nakamura fight was pretty good, and this is coming from someone who really doesn’t like watching Machida fight. He took it to Nakamura, and dominated the entire time. He also pushed the pace more than I’ve seen him do in many other fights. Compare that to the Tiger White fight. That fight was almost as boring as Shamrock vs Severn 2.

Because with all the testing they DID do if they DIDNT they could face scrutiny from state body’s that commission it or congressmen.

We all know & love the way our politicians champion causes that never directly affect anyone and then the media bites hook line & sinker. :@

They don’t test specifically for this or that. They test for anomalies. When they see levels in your body are too high, they put the dots together and figure out what it is. They don’t know if it’s weed or steroids until they figure the clues out. Narcotics are easier to figure out as they raise different things in your body, so those results come sooner. Also, fines are usually issued by the state’s athletic commission, not the UFC. So the UFC’s not to blame for the inconsistency. Anyway, wasn’t Diaz’s test in Japan?

A UFC newcomer was fined $500 and suspended 3 months, when a USA star Nick Diaz fails the same drug test and gets fined half of his pay for his Gomi fight and was suspended for 6 months. All of these F’n ’suits’ need to realize that they are treaging Nick unfairly for no reason. Nick said that when he was fighting in the UFC, he was smoking pot, but they never said anything to them. Appearantly the drug testing has gotten strickter since then.

I hope what I had said above didn’t come off that way but it’s a drug none the less and has no place in any sport-
and I still hope any fighter using any type of drug when there’s a fight coming up for any reason, LOSES.

Steroids and weed are far, FAR different substances. Steroids are performance enhancers, while pot is not.

I don’t think you should be punished at all for weed. Then again, I don’t think it should be illegal. The fact that alcohol (far more dangerous substance) is legal, while pot isn’t, baffles me. I think it’s a case of idiots who remember the DARE commercials with the older kids handing out free joints in back alleys, and think it is something evil. The fact is it isn’t evil, it isn’t a gateway drug, and it is NOT a performance enhancer. The only performance weed enhances is your dominoes cinastick eating performance

I have recently acquired a fractured skull, broken nose and cheek (result of a sucker punch or elbow not sure). I’ve been smoking pot daily for the last 6yrs for epilepsy, and I have to take morphine and Codeine for my pain. THC is not a pain killer it’s just natural relaxant if anything it would slow down reaction time, make the fighter gas faster, bad judgment, and lessen the fighter’s accuracy and his will to fight.

It’s a waste of time and money to test for marijuana

yeah what a waste of time, smoking pot will help you be slower and less sharp fighting wise. Its completely laughable to think its gonna give a fighter any edge. The only arguement I can possibly agree with, is that because this guy got high, the fans were cheated out of seeing this guy fight at his best. 3 monthes is a joke suspension anyways, I’m of the opinion that they should only test athletes for performance enhancing drugs, unless they are trying to prevent burn outs from fighting( tons of these fighters do much worse drugs than pot, ie steroids cocaines etc…etc…), but this guy most likely just took some puffs after training to relax, so rock with your bad self sucker, you’ll have three monthes to get high while your suspended.
