BJ Penn has been bumped from the UFC 78 card in Newark, N.J., on November 17 and will instead fight at UFC 79 on December 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to FightNetwork.com.
Here’s the snip:
“… it appeared that Penn has been patiently awaiting a new opponent for Nov. in the interim, the popular Hawaiian’s camp has confirmed their leader is now preparing for a Dec. 29 match-up at UFC 79….”
The reason for the switch has everything to do with the uncertainty involving the status of the lightweight title. Current champion, Sean Sherk, was penciled in to defend the 155-pound crown against Penn; however, Sherk tested positive for steroids after his win over Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in July.
“The Muscle Shark” is scheduled to appeal the finding before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) on October 31 — little more than two weeks prior to the Newark event.
Put simply, the UFC can’t promote a show for which it has no main event set in such a short amount of time.
Therefore, Penn will fight for the title one month later on New Year’s Eve weekend against Sherk, or he will face Joe Stevenson for the vacant strap if the Sherk ruling is upheld and he is stripped of the title.

“I was told I was definitely fighting in December or January. I think there’s a strong possibility I’ll face B.J. Penn.”
That means that two championships will be on the line on December 29 — UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra takes on Matt Hughes in the main event of the evening. However, the recent news means that UFC 78 is now void of championship main event.
So can the potential rematch between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans slated for the newly-built Prudential Arena be a big enough draw?

Let’s speed things up a bit..these title defense are to long and far apart.. Sherk put the UFC lW division in a traffic jam.
The LW and WW division both are and have been on hold for way too long.
Also, THIS SUCKS. If Tito/Rashad is the main event, it will for sure be the WORST event in UFC history. Plus, I was planning on attending. The way this card looks, I wouldn’t even waste my time driving there, or the extra money it costs for good seats. As a matter of fact, I just might have to invite about 80 friends to my house to watch this PPV, because it isn’t worth more than 50 cents to me.

Liddell sucks and he will not get any better. Have Chuck/Wandi be the main event of the November PPV. Yes, this goes against everything I said previously about Chuck/Wandi being a main event, HOWEVER, if it were to be the main event in November, I WOULD ATTEND THE PPV LIVE FOR SURE!!! But at this point, I will not be attending.
BJ/Sherk would be a good tilt. I must say I have never really been blown away by any of Joe’s fights…
With regards to Ortiz/Evans II, why even bother with that on a PPV card? We all saw the 1st one and I am sure the 2nd one will be pretty similar. Throw it on a fightnight card.
I can’t stand people who complain about “weak” fight cards like it’s some kind of social injustice, but… this card doesn’t compare favorably to the last several UFC events. I was fine with it until they pushed the lightweight title back. We’ll see what the final card is, but right now I’m less than impressed. It’s too bad because we’re dying to see the UFC up here in the northeast.
Let Hendo War on 78, Tito/Rashad, who cares, two fighters outside the top 10 in their division as a Main Event. Let Hendo fight someone in the top 5. At least there would be something woth watching.

Liddell vs Silva would be great for the November PPV since they have no real main event. It’s so stupid that there isn’t a title match. I also was going to go, but I doubt it now. The UFC sucks at putting together PPV cards. Last weekends was great. They make some PPV with 3 or 4 quality main event type matches and load other PPV cards with matches that should be prelimenary bouts. Obviously now there is no way for a title to be on the line in November. Sherk’s appeal should have taken place now or early October.
I would like to see this show not sell out due to a crappy card.

ViolentMike: I know we talked about meeting up at that event, but 4get that. Tito vs. Rashad is a crappy fignht and surely insnt main event worthy. This may be the 1st event in years except for the UFC ireland crappy event, that I will not be ordering the fight. It looks like I will be at a bar watching the fight on that night. Well, that just sold me. There is no way in hell that I will be attending UFC 78 in New Jersey. Typical Dana White fashion, save the excuses for those who are interested in them. Promotion is not something the UFC needs to do, people will order the fight regardless. Two weeks is plenty of time for BJ Penn to prepare against Sherk or Stevenson. The East Coast is getting no love at all (OHIO doesnt even count)
You can’t tell me that BJ Penn is at an unfair advantage by not knowing who his opponent is. Train to fight period. You have to assume Sherk passes his appeal, if not ? NO BIGGIE get ready to fight for a VACANT title against Stevenson. Odds are he’d win the Stevenson fight anyway since Joe is just getting over a broken face/nose (or whatever it was).

where is KenFlo on the list of people to fight Penn for the title? seriously, he went the distance with the current “champion” but sherk is a proven steroid user and would have been stripped of the title a week after he tested positive if he wasn’t such good friends with Dana. KenFlo has proven himself in the division and it sucks that he still isn’t getting recognized as a true top contender. all the credit in the world to Stevenson, but i think it should be more of a consideration between him and Florian rather then even keeping Sherk in the picture.

It certainly seems to me that George St. Pierre is the number 1, and because he knows it, he is “playing it safe”. I think he is hoping he doesn’t have to fight anyone until he faces Matt HUGHESSS for the title. Honestly the UFC and GSP can’t afford a loss by St. Pierre.
It just sucks that he is staying away from the fight scene until a welterweight title fight. Even though he has NOTHING to prove, his presence at UFC 78 would save New Jersey. This is a classic example of the UFC getting ahead of themselves. They put together a whirlwind of events in September (great for us), but they got so caught up in it that they seem to have messed up their October and November.
Two fights listed for a card that is less than a month away? I have barely even heard any rumors about matchups for 77. Then 78 no longer has Penn? As for Tito vs. Rashad, Tito is no longer worthy of main event status. He hasn’t won a fight against a legit fighter since April of 06. Put Tito vs. Rashad on a UFN or way lower down the ladder at a PPV.

Well machine, it’s all relative really, I mean, think of it like, who deserves it more than him? He beat Pellingrino, Guillard, among other lesser opponents, but who else has done more ya know? Floian? Beating Din Thomas an a couple of other relative no names isnt as much as what Joe has done. But it does suck cuz i really really like Joe as well, but BJ is my favorite MMA’er ever, so someobyd has to lose. I know it will be joe though.

I have completely lost confidence in my ability to call fights with so many upsets lately, the shogun/forest fight for one just baffled me. Whats the point of even ranking fighters anymore when guys who aren’t even top 10 are defeating top fighters on a regular basis. I guess the truth is that there all closer than we realize, no one is unbeatable, maybe fighters have an edge but its probably a lot smaller than we realize.

This is the most lame card yet. I wouldn’t pay even $9.95 for that. They better add some sh1t fast. I skipped UFC 72 (I think it was?) the debacle they aired at 3 PM because it was in the U.K. but I was dying to see the results. I’d check these results Sunday evening. I’d like to see Sanchez at LW but that’s a lot of weight to cut. It’s not like he is weighing in at a natural 163. He was 185 on TUF and dropped to 170 after whereas Penn looked soft at 170.

i haven’t read any of the above comments, but tito/rah II is not worthy of main event status unless theres like 4 really solid other fights, i like the edgar/fisher fight, i like the chonon/ alves fight, thats two…they should have arlovski fight, he could headline this ppv if he was fighting big nog or somebody like that, the ufc could call that a number 1 contender fight, theres the main event right there…or liddell/ silva, but i guess thats a super long shot, how about rampage/ silva III, or how about silva/houston alexander…either way we need to see wanderlei silva fighting someone good on this card and we need to see andre arlovski for god’s sake, where has he been at? i know there is talk about big nog/mir, but i’m sure we’d all rather see big nog fight arlovski for the right to fight randy couture, right?
