Former UFC fighters Robbie Lawler and Nick Diaz will be in action tonight on the EliteXC: “Uprising” card that airs on the Showtime premium cable channel at 10 p.m. ET.
Lawler — the ICON middleweight champion — will take on EliteXC Middleweight Champion, Murilo “Ninja” Rua. “Ninja” is the brother of UFC light heavyweight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Diaz will fight for the first time since his suspension for marijuana in the Takanori Gomi PRIDE FC fight back in February. The Caesar Gracie-trained fighter will take on the BJ Penn-trained Mike Aina in a fight at 160 pounds (catchweight).
Here’s a cool video promoting the showdown:
There’s also a great wleterweight fight between standout Jake Shields and Renato Verissmo. For the entire card click here. And for some fight-by-fight analysis head over to MMAWeekly.com.
Should be a good show.

I wish the UFC still has Diaz and Lawler, that rematch would of been SICK!!!

I agree.
Hey Dana, why don’t you sign Lawler and Diaz back to the UFC, and also Ninja Rua too! That would be awesome!
I was really mad when the UFC decided to let Diaz go. I don’t think they realize how marketable he is, and how much popularity he gained from fans after shocasing several of his fights on UFC unleashed many moons ago.
And then as soon as they release him he defeats (I don’t care what the sanctioning bodies say) frickin’ Gomi. What a bad move on their part!
they offered nick to come back on ultimate fighter 4 but he said no
I wonder what the chances are of Diaz hookin up with the UFC again ??
I love the ufc but I’m glad eliteXC are in the mix since the ufc doesn’t headline some of my favorite fighters and now we can see them fight again. King of the cage has a few good fighters but the show needs to hire a producer because it sucks. The only problem with multiple originations is eventually we will be wondering which champ is the best and have to unify
Nick Diaz is my fav fighter.. cant wait to see this tonight..
I too wish the ufc had Nick.
if you dont get showtime Its On The fightnetwork 10:00 Eastern
I repeat ITS ALSO ON THE FIGHT NETWORK 10:00 PM EASTERN

he said no because he didn’t like the idea of a reality tv show. but he did say he wishes he did and would if offered arian.
i agree Diaz is one of my favs too.
he just won split decision over mike iana.
i think he could have done better but he has been out for a long time, and still put on a great fight.
the guy he fought is no joke, and he proved it.
none the less DIAZ WINS…i want him back in ufc..
diaz got a bullshit decision I hear, got schooled first two round took the last barely. I fucking love gina.
Lawler kicked Ninja’s Ass!! Great fight, back and forth with Ninja being the busier fighter and Lawler landing the heavier shots. You could see that Lawler was just waiting for the later rounds as he stated in pre-fight interviews, and in the 3rd, poured it on and landed a vicious uppercut to put Ninja down. Some heavy ground-n-pound and it was all over. Lawler looked really sharp, very composed, in great condition and fought extremely well against arguably one of the top middle-weight fighters in the world. I bet Dana White is kicking himself for letting Lawler out of his grasp.
Anyone notice on that video they said that Nick’s last fight he KNOCKED OUT GOMI? Then right after that they interview Quadros and he says that Nick choked Gomi with a Gogo.
I want the UFC to sign Robbie Lawler again.
Lawler is now the EliteXC MW champ, I doubt that he’ll be leaving them any time soon, especially if the money is as good as is rumored. Not that you can blame the UFC, Lawler has really matured as a fighter, but when he was with the UFC, he was still pretty green and immature. Now, he trains hard and trains right, has an excellent camp to work in, and it’s obviously paid big dividends.

I used to like diaz but, the punches he was throwing tonight couldn’t knockout a little girl. He lost that fight no doubt. The hawian dude he was fighting got robbed beacause diaz is a newly signed big name for elitexc… complete bs. after seeing that showing, he def wouldnt last long in the ufc now. But lawler would. ufc should have NEVER let lawler go, he is one of the most exicting fighters out there period.
I think maybe diaz smoked a big fat spliff before he came out to fight tonight.
man no one was talking about Diaz until he beat the crap out of Gomi, now everyone is on his nuts
Diaz had his back at the end of 2 and 3. it was a close fight, well deserved split decision, but Diaz won..dude did not get robbed. diaz won round 2 and 3..
his punches wern’t hard but they landed..they got him points…
You must not know diaz because he does that to line up a knockout…thats how he fights….
\regardless diaz won fair and square!!
het yall eamil me with results at hedjrc@yahoo.com i don have shotime
Nick Diaz will always be 1 of my favorite fighter. Anyone know how Ninja did against robbie?

hope you wern’t routin for ninja cause he got bangged out by robbie! i was routin for ninja but i knew it could go either way, and it did..lawler ko’d him round 3…ninja just ran out of gas and robbie came out ready..new MW champ.
Lawler if an F’ing badass.
H.I.T.-Squad = 1-0.
And yes Diaz, that is why Robbie is still getting magazine covers.

Ninja isnt the same fighter he was years ago. Ever since he had to gain weight to fight Segei Kharitonov at total elimanation 2004 (The PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix) and Sergei Knockled him out. Instead of gaining muscle, ninja came into that fight all FAT. In his Prime, Ninja was an animal, for those that dont know, check out what ninja did to Mario Sperry at Pride’s “Armed and Ready” event.
Atleast did Ninja put up a good fight against Robbie?
Does anyone know if Shogun was in Ninja’s corner? if so, how did he look? I ask this question because everyone is saying that Shogun is fat now.
Y havent we herd of the fighter salaries or steriod results for UFC 75 in London?

Dude, go to 76.ufc.com & watch the hype video on Griffin/Rua. Sho-gun looks like a fat-ass who just got off roids.
Just an observation on my part.
Just watched the Lawler/Ninja fight. Very exciting fight. Pretty much on the feet the entire time.
Ninja threw a lot of jabs and leg kicks — seemed to be his strategy. Lawler checked very few of them, and it began to look like they were really going to effect his game.
Ninja tried once or twice for a takedown, but Lawler easily stuffed them.
Lawler threw a lot of looping right hooks that snuck around Ninja’s guard a few times. He also landed several lefts… Overall, Lawler threw more combos, while Ninja stuck with jabs/leg kicks.
Both men threw some head kicks, with Lawler’s coming in the final seconds of the rounds.
Eventually, Ninja began to show heavy signs of fatigue and Lawler took his time stalking him, and throwing right and left hooks, and a few uppercuts.
Finally pinned Ninja against the fence, knocked him down with a couple rights, and finished on the ground, with Ninja squirming to avoid head shots. TKO Lawler.
Ninja looked good, but never really hurt Lawler at all. Couldn’t take Lawler down, and eventually gassed.
Gina Carrano, Jake Shields, and Robbie Lawler looked great in their wins. Nick Diaz looked great the only problem is they never give him credit for those small little peppering shots. Mike Aina’s FACE looked horrible. He has such a great style of just landing perfect on everything he throws. Lawler owne Rhua letting him get comfortable throwing hands, then Goodnight, Ninja!
anyone know where i can find the diaz fight posted?
The Diaz/AIna fight is kinda like a replay of the Bisping/Hamill fight except less controversial. DIaz got his ass whopped badly by the hawaiian guy, diaz is finished, i’ld put my money on Nate whopping Nick’s ass.
Also, Rua gassed out in like 2:30 in the 2nd round, all lawler had to do was wait n boom..
The chic fight was awesome, YES we had chics trading punches and kicks and even submission, we need more of that, definately luv me some EliteXC.

That was a solid night of fights. And free! Nice to see someone other than UFC put together a good card. Competition between organizations will be good for the fans.

Yes, it was a close fight & yes Aina clearly won the 1st round. However, despite how effective they were, Aina’s sporatic flurry’s were not enough to override the CONSTANT agression & super-accurate boxing that Diaz displayed. Diaz was absolutely relentless throughout the fight & it threw punches from the start to finish of every round.
Nick Diaz needs a good fight camp.
I’m a bit sick of the trend of calling every decision a “robbery.” It’s a knee-jerk reaction from people that don’t seem to understand they aren’t watching boxing. I agree with those who say Hammill should have won his decision, but Diaz took this fight.
He didn’t “barely” take the third round as some have said. He won it handily. I think Aina got the first round (the judge who scored it 30-27 Diaz must be crazy), and Diaz took round two, which was close enough to score either way. It’s not a robbery in any way. To say it is is a knee-jerk reaction from somebody who doesn’t understand what they’re watching.
I watched the diaz fight very carefully and would definitely say Diaz one it. Arguably 30-27 but definitely 29-28. Diaz was continuously landing inside knees to the legs and body. He probably landed 80% of his punches while Aina landed about 20%. Diaz puts a lot more power into his punches than people realize. Take a look at the punch that knocked out lawler, it didn’t look like much at all.
My score: Diaz 30, Aina 27
Now what about Gina Carano! Wow …

Yeah the offer sucked win and you get a title shot and instant popularity boost(and he woulda won he is way better then Serra or anyone else on the show).

That is some of the funniest shit ever. They took the fight away from him because THC levels where so high that he felt no pain in the ring. What a crock of big stinky platypus poo that is. It has been a while since I smoke any pot, and in the 20 some odd years of smoking, that shit never worked as a pain killer for me. Anything to keep Diaz down. He is the man. Those little testing jabs, coming out of the southpaw stance are awesome
So… Lawler Dominated Ninja. Also he now fights outa Hughes’ HIT Squad…
nick diaz was gonna be on ultimate fighter 4 but got injured and left
John, from what I understand, it had nothing to do with an injury, he just didn’t want to be on the TUF REALITY Show. He did not have much respect for the TUF alumni, just look at all the pre and post fight interviews of him after he fought Diego Sanchez. But now that his brother Nate was on it and won it, I doubt that he’ll be bad mouthing the TUF alumni as a whole, but I’m sure that he would call out individual fighters if need be.
I think maybe diaz smoked a big fat spliff before he came out to fight tonight.
Dude, no kidding. That’s exactly what my wife and I were saying. I am SO happy that I was able to get my wife interested in Nick Diaz. She only watches fighters that she likes, then she goes and watches what she wants in the bedroom. She also watched the main event, cuz Matt Hughes is one of her favorites, and it was the first televised fight of a H.I.T. Squad fighter.
As far as the Diaz fight goes, he just didn’t take the fight seriously because he never heard of his opponent. A lot of fighters think that, but that was one of the first times I heard the fighter say it in the post fight interview in front of the other fighter, lol.
Diaz lost round 1. Round 3 was close, especially since he got sent to the floor, he was a little off balanced (just threw a kick) and only on one foot when he got hit though. In the middle of round 2, I was yelling for him to take him down. I told me wife that if he can get him down with a minute to go, he’ll choke him out. He gets the takedown and back control with, 35 seconds in the round. If the round was 10 seconds longer, he would have gotten the choak. Then round 3, he gets the takedown with about a minute and a half. If THAT round was 2 seconds longer, he would have won by armbar.
I honetly thought that I just witnessed my favorite fighter of all time get beaten by a no named nobody. However, they said it was a split decision and as soon as they said the first judges scored it 30-27 Diaz, I knew he won it. But what is up with the judges scoring? There is no way Diaz won round 1. He wasn’t even trying.
Atleast did Ninja put up a good fight against Robbie?
Johnn, Ninja did not look good against Lawler. Zero strikes were exchanged in the first 40 seconds as the circled each other. By the second round, Ninja already appeared to be getting tired and it became obvious that Lawler would win by knockout, it was only a matter of time.
Does anyone know if Shogun was in Ninja’s corner? if so, how did he look? I ask this question because everyone is saying that Shogun is fat now.
His brother Shogun was not in his corner.

Jake Shields = WOW. That was a dominating performance. Can you imagine if they didn’t stop that fight? Cheruto would have brain damage, no doubt. Jake was relentless with his strikes from the mount. I was amazed at how easily Jake was able to trasition to the mount against someone with the BJJ skills as Cheruto.
Gina Carrano with a submission! That was nice to see, but I prefer seeing Gina stand and bang. I’m surprised that no one mentioned a comment made by the announcers. One of them said that “Before the fight, Tonya had said that she’d prefer to make out with Gina Carrano then knock her out, but tonight she was going to have to knock her out”. Then Goldberg says “I wouldn’t touch that with a 25 foot pole” And Mauro says “But I’d sure love to touch it with my 25 centimeter pole”
Priceless!
No one mentioned a peep about the Villasenior/Fukuda fight. That was a highly entertaining, evenly matched fight.
I was just catching up from the weekend, and in the Chuck Liddell is prepared thread, on Friday I put predictions for 3 of the fights. I typed:
Nick Diaz will KO/TKO Aina in the first round.
Jake Shields dominates Sheruto and wins by GnP, I don’t know if he can submit Sheruto unless he drops him first and Sheruto is completely dazed.
Robbie Lawler beat Ninja in an upset to become MW champ.
I had the second and third right on the money (ESPECIALLY Shields dominating and winning by GnP. That was as exact as you can get!).
And I also read some people dissing Nicks punching power. Yes, sometimes it appears that he is just pitter pattering, but there is something behind those punches, just ask everyone he’s knocked out. Also, Nick throws a LOT of punches because he utilizes his reach advantage. If he put everything he had behind every punch, he would tire himself out. PLUS, did you see Mike Aina’s face? It looked like he got beatdown by Fedor by 3 rounds, not peppered by Diaz! But what Nick does is constantly land punches, and when he gauges his opponents reactions, setting him for the knock out. As soon as that split second arises, he will put more behind the punch.
Did anyone else watch this event??? I thought that people would be discussing on Monday morning.
Ninja fighting style really dissapointed me… I saw him scatter to throw a kick and punch about 3 or 4 times…And those attemps had no form to them, that showed his desperateness to strike and I know that Robbie caught on to that..Also I saw him try to implement the chutebox style of fighting by being constantly agressive but that failed for him miserably..

Man Violent Mike you could’nt be anymore right about Ninja..I mean in the middle of the first round I was thinkin, if ninja can’t take him down or get lucky hes gonna get caught and knocked out…Not to mention did ya’ll notice Lawler smiling for the majority of the fight… It was as if he couldn’t wait for the inevitable.
please someone post a thread…..the one I got doesn’t work….been dying to see these main 2 fights
Nick Diaz is the man, he put on another great performance and got the win. Thats all that matters, and for everyone that is dissin his puching power why dont you get in the ring with him and see what he does to you. I do believe he did knockout the new eliteXc MW champ. And if you look at robbie during the post fight interview when aina is talking, you see him shaking his head agreeing with aina that diaz is one of the best in the world, and he is THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
