ufc 74 randy couture
Props: FightNetwork.com

Quoteworthy:

“UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture will be featured on an upcoming installment of A&E’s ‘Biography,’ the Emmy-award winning series that has profiled some of the world’s most influential people, from statesmen and Supreme Court justices to activists and pop-culture icons. Soon, Couture’s name will placed alongside those of Princess Diana, Oprah Winfrey and Christopher Columbus…. Filming on Couture’s episode will begin next week and will include interviews with Couture’s two oldest children, his mother, referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy and a host of others closest to the only five-time champion in UFC history.”

This is quite an honor and remarkable achievement for not only “The Natural,” but the sport of mixed martial arts, too. “Biography” is a very well respected and high profile series that will no doubt penetrate a new — and rather large — audience. Now all the network needs to do is have Bill Kurtis narrate this thing.

I agree, this is a huge deal for the sport of mma. I mean Biography has featured everyone from actors to supreme court Judges. Randy being on this show just shows how far the sport of mma has come. I believe that by 2009, MMA will be Gianormous (will ferell)

They couldnt have picked any other fighter. Randy is the perfect spokesman for mma, rampage is second. Even though Rich Franklins career is on the decline, Rich was a wonderful mma spokesman. He is always a fan favorite and he shows so much class byb telling the fans not to booo his opponents (like he did with Anderson Silva). Rich is a real classy dude. I dont think he will beat Silva, but hopefully he will be able to still compete at a high level because the expansion of the UFC really needs guys like Rich, Rampage, Randy.

MMA Taking over the WORLD. Anyone know if Dana white is planning any events in Japan? Japan has wonderful fans and a UFC event in Japan could sell out a Soccer stadium, instead of the basketball arenas that the UFC is selling out in the USA.

Damn I wish I had showtime! Ninja vs. Robbie Lawler could be an awesome fight.

Violent Mike, or anyone else for that matter: Does Dana have any plans on bringing Nick Diaz back to the UFC? Please bring back “Diablo” Diaz, he is not only a very skilled and well rounded mma practitioner, but he is also a pure fighter. He brings it everytime and I dont recall him ever being in a boring fight.

Doesn’t Mayhem fight at 185? If so, I would like to c the UFC bring him back. I watched a fight with him vs. a Japanease dude the other night and Mayhem was trying some highly advanced ju jitsu. He was trying submissions that you dont c too often in mma like “splits” and the “twister”.

John, I know exactly what ur talking about..that is the type BJJ that even the most skilled on the ground don’t go for in events like WEC ..alot of BJJ fighters play a safe game..I think if BJJ guys open themselves up..like the old school Carlos Newton vs Saku fight..is a classic example of how exciting BJJ/ Submission Wrestling is…Great Point Bro.

How do you figure? He lost his belt, big deal. All champs eventually lose. He then went on to win two fights to become number one contender. He’s risen back up to fight for the belt. I can see how you may say his career is on a decline if he loses again to Silva, but until then he has risen.

John, how good to Mayhem look on the ground in that fight- WOW. GSP couldn’t finish him in his only UFC fight. He now fights at MW, which of course is the weakest division. In a different thread today, I had mentioned how last week or so I listed by top 10 favorite fighters, and I had Mayhem right around number 6 or 7. He is SO entertaining. Did you see those little karate kid motions he was doing against the Japanese fighter? Did you see when he went for that weak shot, and acted surspised when his opponent wasn’t there? Or when he kicked that guy in the nuts, Mayhem’s facial expression was pricelss. Consider me a Mayhem Monkey for life. The UFC NEEDS to rescue Mayhem and Paulo Filho from the WEC MW division.

And now on to your question about Diaz, my FAVORITE Fighter:

After Diaz lost 3 straight DECISIONS (you can NOT finish Diaz. He has only been stopped once, and that was against Jeremy Jackson, when Diaz was like 17 years old. Diaz had avenged that loss - TWICE. Once by TKO, and once by armbar). Then right before UFC 62, Thiago Alves pulled out of his fight against Josh Neer. THe UFC needed a last minute replacement, so they called they always ready Nick Diaz. Diaz submitted Neer, and in his next fight, TKO’d Gleison Tibau. Since then, the UFC has not called him to fight.

PS. If he pulled off that Twister, or that split thing he transitioned to, I would have jumped so high, I would have cracked my head on my ceiling. That was SICK. Even Frank Mir was completely impressed by his BJJ.

Thanks for answering a question I have been asking myself for ages, where is Nick Diaz???

I would love to see him face Karo after what happened between him [Karo] and Nate Diaz, even though Nick doesn’t need much reason to beat someone down.

Does anyone know what Nate Diaz was talking about when he said that Nick was being chase around the arena (if I remember correctly) and being allowed to corner him in the TUF finale fight?

I’m dying to c the guy get back to the UFC as well as Filho and with the middleweight division being so terrible I dont know what the hell Dana white is waiting for.

I just dont understand why Dana hasnt brought Nick back in the UFC. If its his thuggish personality that Dana doesnt like, I say so what Kendall grove and Nicks little brother Nate act the same way and that hasnt stopped them from competing in the UFC. After all the wars Nick was in in the UFC and then upsetting Gomi I am really surprised that Dana white hasnt brought him back to the UFC.

Wake up Dana, he is one of the fighters that u can always count on to go to WAR!

I see the winners as

Randy - I’ll never doubt this guy, he’s like wine, better with age

Shogun - My fav fighter, even though Rampage is improved I have to stick by this guy.

Silva - No explaination needed I reckon

BJ Penn - Marcelo is crazy on the ground, but this being MMA BJ’s striking plus his no Gi experience will win him the fight.

But all the fights are close to call

The reason was because Nick was still serving his 6 month supsension by the NSAC for smoking weed. Because of this, they denied him his cornering license. Therefore, Nick was unable to be in his brother’s corner during the TUF finale. That’s what that was about. Then very soon after, was when Nick was in the mall and witnessed Floyd Mayweather talking trash about MMA fighters, saying that he can beat any of them. Nick was so tempted to walk right up to him and put him into his place, but only after trash talking back and having Floyd start the fight. But, and I quote Nick “I’m not a punk” so that’s why he didn’t actually do it. Really great interview of Nick Diaz over at CBSsports.com A lot of it is about his and smoking trees. Its long too!!!

Fisrt an foremost I would like to say Randy by far the win over Timmmmmmmy was the best thing to happen to the sport of MMA.Not only since that fight Randy’s been on damn near everything possible except BET an i think he’s on there after his biography,He is going to open up alot of eyes to men over 35 and if I’m not wrong thats were the age limit stops on the target group of people (18-35).So many older men are going to look at this guy and say,”Hey he 44 I’m 36 I can get back in shape and loook as good sthis guy is” you know what I mean!(Ross Poiton tuf 3)And as for people saying Rampage is not a good spokes person your wrong. He attracts people to mma that don’t even care for the sport cause he’s funny.Like Roger Rabbit said,”makeing people laugh is the best thing you can do for a person”Page has the age group from bout 10 years old to 35 an then Randy will take it home for the people that rampage brings

I agree. I read an article on ESPN saying that while MMA consists of legit sports like BJJ, wrestling, and kickboxing, no MMA fighter is an Olympian or professional in more than one discipline. WTF? That’s like saying decathlon is not a real sport because no decathlete is also an Olympian in 2 or more of the 10 events. Just stupid. But if MMA becomes a different sport, I don’t think they will use exact UFC rules, but a more conservative version. Some differences might be:

- the cage probably won’t go over well, so it’s more likely to be in a ring
- heavier padded gloves
- since boxers wear headgear, I assume the MMA fighters would have to wear them as well
- foot and shin pads (what the TKD fighters wear)
- no elbows
