Light heavyweights Tito Ortiz (15-5-1) and Rashad Evans (10-0-1) will rematch at UFC 78 at the Prudential Arena in Newark, N.J., on November 17.
Last week, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” informed UFCmania.com that the date was “likely” and it was confirmed today in a recent article in the Pahrump Valley Times.
Ortiz and Evans first met at UFC 73: “Stacked” on July 7, fighting to a disappointing three-round draw. The “Man in Charge of the Action” that night, referee “Big” John McCarthy, deducted a point from Ortiz in the second round for grabbing the fence — a development that ultimately led to the 28-28 decision on all three judges scorecards.
After the fight, Ortiz disclosed that he had sustained a back injury during training, hampering his performance in the later rounds. He has since gone on a USO Tour in the Middle East to visit with service men and women in the military stationed overseas.
In recent interviews, Ortiz has commented that he wanted to have the rematch in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, it seems that he has settled on the new Newark arena, which is about a 20-minute drive from the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, as well as easy accessible via mass transit.
Put simply, it’s about as close to New York City as you can get without actually being in New York City.
This should be another exciting addition to a fight card that is shaping up nicely. To check it out click here.

The first fight was a dud..
Matt Hammil vs Michael rematch should be on this card.
Wow.
I believe this will start a whole bunch of rematch crap like the whole ken shamrock vs. tito thing. I dont mind this rematch, but say Rashad wins, tito will want a rematch or visa versa.
Hopefully Tito really did have an injury he was nursing because that definately didn’t look like the Tito of old. I hope he destroys evans this time around. Or I at least hope its an exciting fight ~ no matter who wins.
YO Dana..UFC@MSG..when is that going to happen..bring MMA to the Sports Mecca of the World.
Why does tito seem like hes hurt every time he fights. I hope Rashad wins this fight. Tito is old news and should just make porn with jenna.
Both of these can’t handle any of the top competion in there weight class. And basically i can’t stand either of em, hope it ends in another draw.
Wow this site is suspect now. They edit our comments. MIne wasn’t even bad, sheesh

yeah, i was just thinking the same thing. Excellent cardio does nothing for him because his back gives out on him after the first round. So EVERY fight he’s been in for the last 2 years he’s amazing in the first round and then can’t do crap for rounds 2 and 3.
“He has since gone on a USO Tour in the Middle East to visit with service men and women in the military stationed overseas.”
This is why it’s so hard to hate Tito even after he whines like a little baby about Dana every five minutes. You have to admit, deep down inside, he really is a good guy despite his “whine like a baby” fight-persona.
man I cant wait for these tickets to go on sale, Jersey hasnt had a show in over 5 years and Im only 20 minutes away from “The Rock”.
Being that the show is 2 months out tickets should be going on sale soon. Mania, please report when tickets go on sale as you always do. I could care less about who is fighting, I am threre no matter what.
As far as this thread goes, same prediction as 1st fight, - Tito GNP Rd 2!
Are you guys really that excited to see this rematch?
This first one was awful, and I see the second one being the same way.
Rashad is a fighter who I can not stand, and Tito still is one of my favorite UFC fighters, but he is not that good anymore.
What he needs.. is drive to become the best again.

Absolutely. I am not a Tito fan, but like I said in a Bisping/Hamill thread, I hate Bisping 10 times more than Tito. Because Tito talks trash about his opponent to hype up the fight, sell more tickets and PPV’s, and ultimately make more money. Once the fight is over, he will shake his opponents hand, give his opponent the deserved respect, and admit that all the talk was just for show to sell tickets.

At least the card is looking more decent now, I think I’ll make the 20min trip to NWK. Is this the last fight in Tito’s contract? I wonder if he’ll be back, maybe if he wins…who knows…
Rashad should drop to 185 like Bisbing after he loses to Tito… Can’t see him going anywhere in the LHW division.
Tito can be good again i recon, just needs to find his self beleif which Chuck knocked out of him.
he’s amazing in the first round and then can’t do crap for rounds 2 and 3.
every time tit… verry true he’s overconfident in himself..then he realises that all ufc fighter are for real…cant keep talking shit tito if you cant finish fights…TITO HASNT HAD A KNOCK OUT IN YEARS….SEE YA LATER TITO.. THIS IS GONNA BE YOUR LAST FIGHT IN THE UFC IF YOU DONT WIN..last fight of his contract!!!!…dana hates him!!

I agree. I don’t like Tito, but I would probably like him a lot more if we saw more of Good Tito and less Whiny Tito and a whole lot less Skeletal Chopped Beef Crotch Porn Skank.
I don’t know, I really have no interest in seeing this rematch take place. The first fight was a dude, Rashad seems to have reverted to his old ways on the show of dancing around and trying to be a Wrestler that counter punches. I don’t really see the merit in having a rematch so close, I’d rather see them move on to some new competition. Tito was clearly the more dominant of the two very “flat” fighters. It’s going to be hard to watch because Rashad seems like he’s reverting and Tito isn’t doing anything to bring his game to the next level to complete with the new talent that actually tries to fight. I find it hard to believe that Rashad trains out of Jackson’s camp, most guys seems to come out guns blazing but Rashad obviously felt either weaker then Tito or he wasn’t confident in his training. The last one was a snooze as Tito continually tried for takedown and Rashad, danced, bobbed & weaved.
There have been hints since thier first fight, that their rematch would take place in New Jersey during November. That STINKS. I was really hoping that his fight wouldn’t take place in New Jersey. I plan on attending the even, and I really don’t want to have to sit throught the snooze fest of Tito vs Rashad II. I won’t even be rooting for a fighter, I’ll be rooting for the fight to just end.
Frankie Edgar vs Spencer Fisher. Now that’s a fight I’m happy about seeing!
To be honest with you guys, I have been to one UFC event so far, it was UFC 55 FURY, in October ‘05 at Mohegan Sun. The way the pricing worked meant you had to pay $350 for good seats. The cheapest were $75 or so. That’s whay I opted for because the $150 seats were in the same sections of the $75 ones, they were just the first half of rows in those upper sections. From that distance, its pointless to watch the fighters in the octagon because they are tiny. For the most part, I found myself trying to watch it on the big screen at an awkward angle. Comparing that to ordering a PPV, I would prefer to order the PPV and get the commentary. Yeah, they are annoying at times, but Rogan pumps me up during a fight! So when they are in New Jersey, I plan on getting the GOOD seats, or I’m not even going to bother going. However, either way, you’ll find me at the weigh ins. Its a great opportunity to meet some of the fighters.
And those prices were 2 years ago, so plan on spending at least $400 per ticket if you want to see the fights, and not wish you were home watching on PPV. Plus, when you’re there live, you can NOT hear the post fight interviews.
I’m definitely not paying $40 bucks to see them dance around the octagon again. BJ doesn’t have an opponent. I like BJ but he’s not enough to sell me on a $40 PPV. UFC 78 isn’t looking too good. I’ll catch it on the internet the next day.
Matt Hammil vs Michael rematch should be on this card.
Yea and title the EVEN : VENGANCE!!!
This time Dana White and his B@#&Hes won’t save Rashad. No points will taking away because he KO Rashad.
The nice thing about this rematch is that it will settle whole thing, hopefully! Since the first fight was a draw, there will be no reason to have a third fight. If this one would go to a draw (unlikely) then too bad for both of them. Like Dana says, don’t leave it in the hands of the judges.
Tito needs to train, this should not include banging Jenna! He clearly ran out of gas the 1st fight. If he was conditioned like the old Tito, he wins that fight easy!! Leave the porn queen at home, go to big bear and train your ass off Tito, so you can stay in the UFC. A loss and you won’t be resigned!
i’m starting to like the way 78 is looking, especially if sherk is able to defend his belt against b.j. and karo gets to fight mach sakurai, those would be two nice fights to go along with spencer fisher/frankie edgar and now tito and rah II, which i know was not the best fight the first time around, but i expect rashad to push the pace a lot more in the rematch and that should make for a much better fight, looks like another solid ppv coming our way in november…plus joe lauzon is fighting, you gotta love that guy

bingo - who really cares about either of them - they are bclass fighters at best now. Tito wil probably end up getting hurt again, maybe froburn or something this time.

I’m not sure if I’m there no matter what, but its good to see that they are back in New Jersey. And you know what, fu%k New York. Every time something is happening in NJ, we here how close it is to NY. …
…Sorry I’m just still sore about my Rutgers being associated with NYC and not New Brunswick, the city its right next to.
ZZZZZZZZZZZ…
I’m bored just thinking about the rematch. My make for a good WEC fight though.
Awww yeah. I get to go to this one!!!
I think Rashad came out hesitant in the first match because it was such a big step up in competition for him. Now that he knows he is capable of beating Tito standing up or by taking him down, he’ll be a lot more aggressive. I think this fight will be much more entertaining than the first one, and Rashad wins easily, either by GnP stoppage or clear-cut decision.

I think that Rashad had the same thing happen to him against Tito that happened to GSP when he 1st faced Hughes. The realization that the up & comers get when they step in the cage for the 1st time against a superstar can be immobilizing. I can imagine how it can be overwhelming to some when they truly realize that they have made it.
How come it’s rarely mentioned that Tito blocked THREE takedowns by grabbing the cage? If we factor in those takedowns then that obviously would eclipse the ONE point Tito had deducted, wouldnt it?
Great another snore fest….

i had a feeling it would be in november, so that is the co main event with the bj penn match vs who knows
is arlovski gonna fight on the card
I’m tired of Tito. He is not even close to what he once was and it’s ironic that just last year he was going off on Ken being washed up. Let’s face it, if Tito left the UFC tomorrow, would anyone really care? Would you even know that he’s gone? I honestly forgot about him until this article.
Guys, Tito hasn’t won a fight against a credible opponent in his prime since Forrest Griffin on April 15, 2006! Let’s move on.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I can not care less about this rematch. Both Tito and Rashad’s performance in the first fight was pathetic. Why should anybody pay to watch them fight again?! They should be on Spike … at best. And now to have it @ UFC 78 where I plan on going because it is one of the few PPV events here in the East Coast just makes me upset. They better have some better cards on this PPV or I might just catch this one at home or maybe even online.
If it was an untelevised bout it would be hilarious; that’s what it should be. The UFC doesn’t need another fighter with charisma like Tito; Rampage is ten times better and he and Chuck can sell the ppvs in the future.
I never liked Rashad his fighting style is timid and scared. He stays out of reach and likes dance around like a little bitch.
Tito should pound him out this time. If he can’t then he should retire.
No snooze fest this time, I’m looking forward to Rashad kicking his ass and being a little less timid.

Thats because match maker wants to put him against reality tv fighters.
Tito’s still an exciting fighter to watch . He’s lost a step or two, but i’ll rather see an old tito fight. Than a young show boating loser like Rashad fight. Tito was invincible in his prime like tyson was. And even if he’s lost that ora of inviciblity people still want to see if he can get it back.

I could care less abut this fight. Tito is a has-been. He is a B rate fighter now. His one big asset “Cardio” seems to work very well for him…in the first round. I use to be a huge Tito fan but you have to admit, he’s now just a scrub that cant even beat a TUF fighter… I think its time to retire or at least stop talking so much shit cuz you cant back it up anymore.
I cant stand Tito or Rashad. But I see the rematch going to Rashad. Rashad was gunshy in the 1st rd against Tito. you could tell he was real nervous and wasnt sure if he really belonged in there. But as the fight went on, Rashad showed just how good of a wrestler he really is. He finished that fight strong after dancing around in the 1st half of the fight. In the rematch I c Rashad comming out confident. I also think Rashad is gonna come after Tito from Start to finish. I really see Rashafd winning this next fight.
Rashad will be more confident this time around. I also think he would have won the first fight had Tito not cheated and grabed the cage to avoid rashads takedowns. I am looking forward to this fight. Rashad by ground and pound.
This better be a more exciting than the first. I wanna see Tito lose and see him cry.
There is no way Tito loses this fight, Rashad is to small for the 205 pounders. I hope tito wins in dominating fashion then there can be a tito vs Shogun,Silva or even henderson.
Tito is going to slam Evans like a red headed dtep child, or in his case a nappy headed ho, I believe was the term Ortiz used a few months back. Tito honestly dwarfs the lil 5′ 10 or 11″ Evans. Take away the holding of the fence, and he wins period.
I just want to see him win in dramatic fashion. If that doesn’t happen, he should call it quits or have one more prize fight against someone like Wanderlei Silva or Ryoto Machida just for shits and giggles.

Some of what you talk about as far as Rah’s gun-shy-ness is only apparent to people who pay close attention to a fighter or possibly a fan who understands body language. A good example would be Chuck’s mannerism’s & the look in his eyes at the weigh-ins & during his walk to the cage to fight Rampage, Rich Franklin on his walk to the cage to fight Silva & also GSP on his walk to the cage & ring entrance when fighting Serra.
I remember reading posts from a few people on any of the above examples (including Rah vs Tito I) about how they could see the “look in their eye” that let them know that the fighter was unsure of themselves in some way or another. You know what I’m saying? They could have felt that they really couldnt beat this person or maybe they had an injury they never told anyone about & felt it would be their downfall or simply didnt train properly.
Things like body language & variation of habit are & will always be lost on fan’s who are casual and also on those fans that may not particularly care for a specific fighter. Simply put, they have no interest & therefore do not invest any effort into studying a fighter close enough to analyze their strength/weaknesses. Personally, within reason, I try to learn as much about a fighter when the timing is relevant whether I like them or not. That’s how big of an MMA fan I am.
When you look at Rah vs Tito in the first fight, based on the perspective I listed above, you will notice the huge difference in Rah compared to his last 3 fights. Rah was very tentative & yes he dances alot but vs Tito, he danced twice as much as usual. THe look in his eye was slightly off as well. At the other side of the octagon, Tito was his usual focused self in the begining. Once they locked horns, by mid-fight, all of that changed. Rah began to realize that he’s just as strong as Tito, just as good of a wrestler & could take a punch from Tito. On the other side of things, Tito began to realize this as well which ultimately had the opposite effect on Tito & sucked Tito’s confidence away & in turn, bolstered Rashad’s. Add 1 or 2 more rounds to that fight then factor in the 3 takedowns that would have happened had Tito not used the cage to stop them & you have an entirely different ending to the fight which leans heavily in Rah’s favor.
This is why I say Rashad takes this in Rd 2 via TKO.
Wow, I’m glad so many people in this forum feels the same way I do. You guys really do have a passion for good fights and I like that.
To all the Tito fans, I appreciate your loyalty but he just does not even look like the same fighter that took out Ken Shamrock now.

Take away the holding of the fence and Rashad spends the last two rounds dumping Tito on his huge head.
Machine sometimes when you focus in to much you miss out on the big picture. The overall picture is Tito is going to smash rashad’s mug. After that fight rashad was really disrespectful towards Tito. I don’t know about you but thats one mma fighter you don’t want to piss off. Unless you want to fall victim to the most vicious ground and pound in mma.
I dont think slamming or anything else is gonna have anything to do with this fight, just like the first fight. Tito hasnt ended many fights unless its been on the ground… same with Rashad. The matchup when it comes to strength and wrestling is so close… much like the first meeting. Tito has markedly better standup, this fight is gonna go to decision. If Tito doesnt get gased (be it back, cardio, whatever..) after the 1st round like the first fight, he will get the win. Im not sure Rashad has the standup to KO the big head though…
I’m not sure what to think about Tito. I always look forward to his fights because they’re usually pretty exciting, but he’s not as brutal as he used to be. Maybe he’s distracted. I don’t imagine I’d feel safe leaving Jenna Jameson alone for months on end while I’m training for a fight. That’s a pretty big distraction for a guy who says he’s in love.
I think Tito still has it in him to beat good fighters (or at least be competitive), and I really wish he’d stop wasting his time with Rashad, who is obviously a MW in LHW clothing. I actually think it’s relatively demeaning for him to place much importance on this fight.
Nothing against Evans, but I hope Tito clobbers Rashad so he can move on to the new batch of top LHW’s in the UFC. I would be very interested in seeing Tito fight Shogun or Wandy. Hell, I’d enjoy seeing him fight Rampage or even Henderson as well.
yea have all the fights on the main card rematches that everyone wants to see and call the card rematch or revenge or something like that
You all have the same valid point with just a small difference in oinions. Tito is on the ropes here and needs a win via anything but decision. If not he could very well be on his way out of the UFC. Rashad could lose here and still fight some of the lower ranked guys but it will solidify to me that a drop in wieght would really help him out. I am an old Tito fan and am trying not to lose faith….I hope he doesn’t force me to.

Rashad has been brash since his stint on TUF. Most didnt notice it because he was such an underdog. It obviously surprised many of you but to me it was nothing new. Remember the whole beef between Rashad & Hughes because Hughes didnt like Rashads trash talking & show boating? I mean who is Hughes to talk? But I digress. The point is that Rah’s attitude has been there from jump street its just that people are only now paying attention.
Oh & by the way, Tito is ALWAYS disrespectful so how can you fault any fighter for giving him a taste of his own medicine?

Rah definately has the heavier hands of the two but then again, Tito has never been outright KO’d has he? TKO’d yes but never flat-out knocked unconcious.
Truthfully…….if you let Tito keep the point that was deducted & let Rashad have the 3 takedowns Tito stopped by holding the cage, who wins that fight in a decision? Even if you hate Rashad, you can’t argue that under that circumstance he would’nt have won that decision, can you?

Sorry, this kinda shit cracks me up. What has Tito done to make him a ‘pussy?’ How can a fighter, and former world champ be a ‘pussy?’ I think pussy as someone that sits on the internet and calls other people on the internet a pussy.
Gimme a break, ADD something to the conversation rather then a 3 line dig at some fighter that you dont like.
Btw, I dont like Tito much if at all either…

Strong Choice of Words there John.
If Tito wins, then you could possibly see a Wanderlei vs. Ortiz II, no matter if Wanderlei wins or loses.
There are alot of “top” UFC guys who want Rua and Wanderlei. They are coming in with a big target on their backs.
I think Rashad needs to develop his finishing tools. Like with Gonzaga he ended one fight with a good kick and all of a sudden it was said he was a good striker.
I like Rashad but when I think of what he is great at that would finish a fight its not his BJJ or his stand-up all that is left is GnP.
Rashad needs more tools and Tito needs the killer instinct, if they both bring this then it would be a fight, but this isn’t a particularly exciting re-match.
Win or Loose I think Rashad should consider Middle Weight! He could do real well in that division!
Someone needs to sneak into the locker room of both fighters and piss them off before this fight!! Maybe they will come out and do something then!!
Rashad is only getting a rematch because a point was taken away and bad judging Tito won every round even with his average performance besides they dont make an interesting rematch anyhow they should call it the who cares match or the hope its over quickly match, both should go in different directions i want to see Tito fight the ax murder again to see if he is still a top contender for his welcome to the ufc comeback and i dont care if Rashad ever fights again.

I was a Big Rashad fan until that last fight, now its just so-so. He seems to fight to the level of his compitition. He nneds to come out swangin on Tito and stop being so darn concerned about his undefeated record
I see rashad winning the rematch. When evans let his hands go in the 3rd round he easily won the round. I think if he pushes the pace he will be able to tire out tito. I dont think tito’s cardio is all that great. I think rashad is going to win this fight by a unamious decision.

Truthfully…….if you let Tito keep the point that was deducted & let Rashad have the 3 takedowns Tito stopped by holding the cage, who wins that fight in a decision? Even if you hate Rashad, you can’t argue that under that circumstance he would’nt have won that decision, can you?
In the ten point system when they take a point away it means the most you can get in that round is 9. Tito’s point deduction is what made it a draw.
Tito won the first round 10-9.
Rashad won the third round 10-9.
Round 2 was 9-9 because rashad couldn’t win the round even with tito’s point deduction.
im one of the biggest tito fans out there but to be honest hes looked like crap in his last fights. It looks like he has lost his drive to be a contender at lhw. gnp until the ref stops the fight, thats the tito we want to see back. hes very good at coaching and helping up and comers but i seriously think he needs to distance himself from his guys for a while and bring in someone who will push him to his max and he really need to focus on his standup if he plans on moving up in ranks or pull a griffin and call out a big name and ask for the match against wanderlei. im sure wandy wouldnt have a problem with that. either that or he will be coaching in ifl when the ufc contract is up.

Yeah but you;re not factoring in how the 3 takedowns would have swayed the judging had Tito not obviously grabbed the cage to stuff them.
Tito’s not exactly the easiest guy to keep down, so who knows how it woulda went down had rashad actually gotten a few of those “cage stuffed takedowns” maybe he gets quickly swept each time, earning tito more points in the “judges” eyes. i’m just saying who ever really knows….
oh yeah,
rashad aint winning shit btw. tito will hopefully come out healthy and whoop that ass. HB Bad Boy style!
as the decision is called, look at rashad’s face. he starts laughing and gets happy as if to say “fuck i’m one lucky bitch”. i agree, that was a weak fight, but it was obvious who the stronger fighter was. tito had that choke at the end of the second. so looking at the first fight i would think that if tito can be aggressive and stay healthy that he would win. but i’m really getting tired of all the trash talking. if tito doesn’t knock rashad the fuck out, then he needs to rethink his life. latley ortiz hasn’t given people any reason to think that he’ll ever be the lhw champion again. so he better beat rashads ass or else people will see him as a washed up fighter.
btw … does anyone know if kevin randleman is coming back to the ufc after his suspesion is up in oct ???
