"This company Broadcast.com began the online broadcasts that we hear everyday. I would say that this puts him in the category of savy businessmen."

Coming up with a great idea and a niche company is completely different than the Fertittas, who started off with a one story casino in an already established market, and expanding and grew. Over a matter of decades, through careful planning, investing and risk-taking, they slowly grew thier business into the gaming giant it is today. They did so by being successful year after year in the very competitive Las Vegas gaming market.

Nurturing a company into a juggernaut by re-investing and expanding in a market full of competitors is a lot harder and requires better business skills than creating a niche company that didn't much much money at all (Broadcast.com only had revenues in the $100 million a year range, compared to Station casinos which has revenues over a billion per year), and then selling the company off at in a ridulously over-priced deal during the hyped up .com boom.

Can you see the difference between the required business skills? It's as clear as day. And guess which one is much more important as far as translating into the MMA market?

Cuban is going to get owned.
IceMuncher: #2 The Fertittas are better business men than Mark Cuban. Cuban created and sold an internet company for billions.

Not even close. Way off on that one. Let's try 6 million dollars. Think about it. This was back in 1990 before the big internet boom hit. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/10/07billionaires_Mark-Cuban_IXMB.html

Before you right him off as a mediocre businessman check out the above link.
I stand corrected on this portion of my statement. His initial company sold for $6 million a systems-integration firm MicroSystems. He did create an internet company that he sold to yahoo for 5.7 billion dollars in stock. Although this is a company that he started not that he picked up off of someone.

This company Broadcast.com began the online broadcasts that we hear everyday. I would say that this puts him in the category of savy businessmen.
Cuban is extremely accessible to average fans because he is an average fan, albeit an obscenely wealthy one. He was a huge Mavericks fan when he was working on his internet ventures. He thought to himself that he could do a better job running the team, then it dawned on him that he actually had the cash to be able to buy and run the team. Now with MMA, yes he wants to get a piece of the action now that it's becoming more popular with mainstream sports fans, but he will put together an outstanding product. It won't compete with UFC right away, probably not for at least a few years, but eventually it will. All this will do is drive fighter salaries up, something countless people have complained about on here, and give fans more fights to watch.
Well Said. Good Post.
I personally think they should use the ring if they are really trying to develop it into a recognizable to the mass public professional sport. I think the stereotype that its human cockfighting is too closely associated with the cage to the mass public.

I'm really not trying to make any kind of Pride vs. UFC statement, but in my opinion even with the spectacle Pride put on, it appeared more like a professional sport to me than the UFC does and one of the biggest reasons I feel that was is because of the ring.

I do recognize both as professional sports, btw.
Yeh but then you end up with that shit shit shit rule where guys end up near the ropes and the fight is stopped and started in the middle of the ring again!

FUCK pple who think this is human cock fighting, maybe it is, but its still sport and we enjoy it so middle finger up peeps!

#1 Dana gets slammed by a lot of keyboard warriors for being "unprofessional".

#2 The Fertittas are better business men than Mark Cuban.

#3 Mark Cuban is going to have a hell of a time pulling the top guys away from the UFC.
Nice post IceMuncher. You and I clearly come from the same perspective.
1. Dana does get slammed by a lot of people but you cannot tell me that he brings most of that on himself. Not everyone in the world likes to hear someone use the F-Word in every sentence.

2. As for the Fertittas being better businessmen well, I am not sure where you got that one. It is hard to say who is a better businessman when it comes to people with the kind of money these men have. The Fertittas together are probably worth close to 1 billion dollars. Cuban alone is worth 2.3 billion according to Forbes magazine. You should check out his Forbes page and see the list of accomplishments that Cuban has before you start making claims on who is better. Don't get me wrong I am not saying that Cuban is a better businessman. As I said before it is hard to make a claim such as that with the amounts of money that these men have.

3. I agree it will be a struggle at first to move some of the top name talent from the UFC. The thing that the UFC has to watch out for is if Cuban can pull off the things he is talking about it would be hard to say that he couldn't.

Hey guys, yesterday I listened to that radio interview with Mark Cuban. On there he gave out his email address. So, I decided to send him an email, and drop a little plug for ufcmania.com

I sent the email at 5:15pm, and got a response from 'him' in my inbox this morning. 'He' replied at 9:15pm. So it wasn't an automated email, but I wonder if he really read it and responded, or most likely, some assistant did or something. But in his interview he did say something like he's really been checking his email as of late, and trying to respond to most of them.

Here is the email I sent him:

Mark,
>
> I am truely excited about you starting your own MMA organization. I am
> a
> HUGE fan of MMA, but I am just sick of Dana White. To be honest, I
> don't
> think that the Bisping/Hamill issue would have lasted more than a
> minute with you in charge.
> I can just picture you jumping into the cage/octagon, grabbing the mic,
> and saying "are you kidding me, Bisping you lost, Hamill you won.
> That's
> it. Judges, you are fired". I mean the decision turned the British
> fans
> agains the British Bisping. It was unbelievable! Thank you for coming
> to
> the aid of MMA, it needs you.
>
> If you happen to have a free second (highly doubtful), check out
> www.ufcmania.com Its not about UFC exclusively. Not much new today,
> most was about you! It would be awesome if you could chime in. Just
> let
> them know that ViolentMike sent you!
>
> Thank you Mr. Cuban!!

And the email I got back was:

saw the site, thanks for the email

and you are right, no chance i would jump in the ring

thanks,
