spencer fisher ufc 78Lightweight contenders Spencer Fisher (20-3) and Frank Edgar (7-0) will meet in a 155-pound clash at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., on November 17, according to IowaMMAReport.com.

Here’s the snip:

“The Iowa MMA Report has confirmed that Spencer Fisher will be returning to the Octagon in November to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 78.

Fisher confirmed the bout after reports that he made a MySpace post, saying that he would be fighting in November.”

Fisher was supposed to fight Din Thomas during the main event at UFC Fight Night 11 later this month; however, he had to withdraw from the bout because of a serious staph infection.

Kenny Florian was tapped as the replacement for Fisher against Thomas.

“The King” is looking to put together consecutive wins and get back in the title hunt, which veered off course when Hermes Franca took him out earlier this year. He has since returned to outpoint Sam Stout on all three judges scorecards in a sensational fight at UFC Fight Night 10 in June.

Fisher will have has work cut out for him with Edgar, who will be fighting in front of a hometown crowd at the newly-built Prudential Arena.

The native of Toms River is undefeated and has two impressive wins in his two UFC performances. In fact, “The Answer” has knocked off the super talented Tyson Griffin and very dangerous Mark Bocek.

Spencer is at the top with his striking after seeing his Stout II fight. Totally different level. Edgar better not try to stand with his.

Glad to see Edgar get a high profile fight. I say he takes this one by decision. Fisher is a tough guy to finish off

This is going to be fight of the night canadate. Should be awesome. I like both guys..I dont dont who will take its. This is a toss up. I think Spencer will have the Advantage on the Feet and Frankie is no slouch either tho..but it will be in his best interest to take it to the ground and sum him/gnp. Can he get him to the ground..spencer is a machine.

Cool. That should mean that Frankie Edgar will be on the main card. But it doesn’t really matter because I’ll be there in Jersey. If there was ever an event that I as hoping for a stacked undercard, this is it!

Im extremely pumped for this fight should be a real scrap …

by the way I found that post,

Stunnalator surprised that you even remembered that lol. But I’ll help ease some of this controversey with my expertise, or lack thereof haha.

Everything is contingent upon Sherk’s hearing, however if he does in fact lose his appeal, it is clear that the UFC has intentions of a championship fight between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson for the vacant title. No one should worry about Joe Stevenson’s recent injury becaue like it or not, Dana would PROLONG/PUT OFF/DELAY this fight until December or January.

Now with this Kenny Florian / Din Thomas fight, I have these guys ranked #3 and #4 respectively because there arent too many better than these guys. Kenny Florian is still evolving and Din Thomas has some of the more accurate boxing in the 155 class not to mention good ground work. The winner of this fight will clearly be the # 1 contender, providing Sherk loses his appeal. Otherwise they move up to the # 2 contender slot.

Now we can get in to the guys beyond the top 4-5 guys

We have Frank Edgar who is slated to fight in New Jersey. Two more wins lines him up for serious title contention.

Spencer Fischer - Showed incredibly accurate boxing and a strong chin in his last fight. A fight with Edgar or even Clay Guida makes sense.

Tyson Griffen - Has a fight coming up with Thiago Tavares your typical flavor of the month. If he does his job and gets a win, he may see Roger Huerta.

Clay Guida - As tough as they come, needs to string 2-3 more wins together for late 2008 title picture.

Roger Huerta - It is clear now that Dana and company will stop padding his record and allow a more high profile fight in his next bout. Maybe Fischer or Edgar even ?

Quick Recap

Champion : Sean Sherk

Contenders
1. BJ Penn
2. Joe Stevenson
3. Kenny Florian (argument could be made for Thomas)
4. Din Thomas
5. Frank Edgar (UFC is set on making him a name, especially to bring more venues to the East Coast : Jersey)
6. Spencer Fischer (based on UFC experience and toughness, could have been him fighting Sherk instead of Franca that night)
7. Tyson Griffen
8. Roger Huerta (argument could be made for Guida)
9. Clay Guida
10. Does it matter at this point ?

Please save your Hermes Franca arguments just because he “maned up” and said he took illegal substances, doesn’t make it right. For the Sean Sherk bashers, allow this too unfold and then take your shots if he is suspended by the UFC.

On the horizon
1. Melvin Guillard (only a couple of more months of suspsension)
2. Thiago Tavares (happy Stunnalator ? he beat a railroad worker for god sakes who looked no more than 145 lbs.)
3. Gray Maynard
4. Nate Diaz

C war thanks for the props. Gotta say the matches you propose make all the sense in the world. I just dont think Dana White wants to see those guys lose against each other.

I think that Frank Edgar fight against Spencer Fischer will make for a great fight. Both guys are coming off of exciting wins (Bocek, Stout) and they are both smaller guys at 5″² 6″³ . I think this would be one hell of a scrap with great striking and groun work displayed throughout.

I’d like to see Tyson Griffen fight Roger Huerta after Griffen beats Tavares (cheap shot at Stunnalator) but I dont think the UFC could afford Huerta losing in a match where he’d be fighting someone with equal strength, maybe even slightly stronger.

The Clay Guida fight against Thiago Tavares might be the most fast paced fight in the history of 155 lbs. I think this fight would last one full round and someone would get dropped in the early 2nd. It makes sense to have these two sqaure off because it allows Guida to further prove himself as an up and comer and it would allow Tavares the chance to redeem himself after Griffen manhandles him.

I really have a lot of respect for Spencer Fisher. He worked the corner for Sheron Leggett’s Tapout episode after Leggett’s trainer stiffed him and didn’t show. That fight with Stout was a classic, like watching a Rocky movie!

i really really love this fight, both guys are always exciting, i can’t wait for this one, if edgar wins that would be 3 wins over 3 very good opponents and in my opinion he would only be a couple fights away from fighting for the belt, and same for the king, if he wins he’ll get probably one or two more big fights and then he’ll be in there for a title…love this fight and if i had to pick a winner right now i’d say edgar, the crowd could give him a slight advantage, plus he’s shown a nice chin, great wrestling and just all around desire to win fights, not that the king doesn’t have those traits too, i just like edgar a little bit more in this one…

..it’s not his chin, it’s his heart, drive, determination, that makes him dangerous..if the UFC had a 145lb wright division..Frankie would be the Champ.

Rofl, Im with Stun.

This fight has HUGE title swing with the winner. The popularity and depth at 155 for the UFC is gonna make whomever holds this title have to be a fighting champ (outside of possible injuries.)

Really. I’d like to read up on some reference material on that claim. Because he always seems pretty chill in all of the interviews I’ve seen with him, plus like Trsigley pointed out, he went out of his way to help corner ‘Rob Roy’ during his fight that was presented to us on TapOut.

Fisher has good takedown defense, Some Judo throws in his arsenal, and a strong guard (Ju Jitsu off his back). His bread and butter has to be his striking.

Edgar is a young gamer. He is very tough. For a young, tough fighter, he fights some of the best competition out of the young up and comming fighters (along with clay guida). I dont know if he will pull off an upset, or if fisher will out class edgar with his complete mma arsenal?

Yes Edgar is capable of puling off the upset, but Fisher will be the favorite for a reason.

Too tough to call

Have u herd any rumors about contract talks wit Arona, Rogerio, Kang, Yoshida, Shinya Akoi, Gilbert Melendez, Kawajiri, Misaaki, Mark Hunt (I suspect he will go back to K-1 but I have no facts to support it), Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler?

also does anyone have any Idea when new Pride DVD’s will be released in the usa (2006 Absolute Grand Prix), Bushido Survival, Shockwave 2006?

also is the UFC ever gonne release the old UFC dvd’s (pre zuffa years)?

Frankie will take this fight. Jujitsu and all that other crap does not compare to a wrestler at Frankie’s level: He more than proved that against Bocek. And Griffen. Plus, his striking was vastly improved between his first two fights-does anyone think that it will not be even better in this fight? Frankie trains with the best in each area of fighting within 3 hours of where he lives, so expect him to be much improved (he would win even if he was not). Plus, Fisher lost to that Ultimate Fighter chump that Frankie would have ruined before he even began MMA training, so I see no contest here.

After clearly pounding Sam Stout in his last fight, Fischer had nothing but respectful comments about Stout and mentioned how the fight was close even when it was not. All fighters talk a fair amount of smack before fights; what matters is how they take a win or a loss.
