fedor at ufc 75
Props: CBSSports.com

Quoteworthy:

“Speaking of [Fedor] Emelianenko, there are reports circulating that he will be at UFC 75 Saturday with UFC Heavyweight Champion [Randy] Couture for what is being called a promotional appearance, since both men have sponsorship deals with the Affliction clothing line. With the status of Emelianenko as the last really big name fighter holding out on UFC, this is nearly as good a reason to watch the show as any of the fights on the card. The worst that could happen is that Emelianenko really has no other reason for attending UFC 75 than to promote Affliction, and people still get to see a rare side-by-side appearance of UFC and Pride’s heavyweight champs. Or, in a best-case scenario, all the recent comments by Emelianenko’s management and Dana White himself that contract talks have stalled were just a smokescreen to save a really, really big announcement for UFC 75. Either way, this show isn’t a pay-per-view, so there is virtually nothing to lose from tuning in on the off-chance that UFC has landed the year’s biggest free-agent signing. Emelianenko is not a lock to appear, but at least you don’t have to drop $40 (or $50 for those with HDTV) to find out.”

So is the appearance of the biggest free-agent name in the sport at a UFC event a “smoke screen” for a done deal or just a happy coincidence? Let the conspiracy theories commence.

I really don’t know if they would be able to keep the signing of Fedor such Top Secret. News ALWAYS leeks. Especially when we’re talking news this big. However, I really hope he did sign this week. Both Dana, and Fedor’s management said that they were getting close to signing, and then they met in person. Then both sides say that ‘things have been stalled’. We can only hope that this ’stall’ that they talk about is UFC 75. The terms used by both sides could be a ’smoke screen’, or of course the two stubborn sides just can’t make a deal.

Exactly. If I was as good as Fedor, I would definitely want to fight where the top competition/money is. Conversly, if I was the top MMA promotion, I would want all the best fighters, especially the best heavyweight.

Plus, that would be an awesome fight. Unfortunately, I have to go with Fedor. Not saying hes gonna whoop Randy, but I think he will at least outpoint him.

thank god the days of tim having the belt are way behind us. randy vs fedor should be a great fight maybe on a level higher then fedor vs mirko. if randy gets fedor in the clinch this could be competitive fight. i still think fedor walks thru randy but i will be cheering for randy all the way.

I am a big randy fan… the man is not human 44 years old and still going strong… but it seems like in the last 2 fights randy had its always been “I like Randy and want him to him BUT i think (insert Tim or GG here) will beat him BUT i will be cheering for randy”… i am guilty of this but i think this is what Randy strives off of… i cant wait to see this fight when it happens…i will have to be neutrel on this one i think who ever wins it will still be an exciting fight.

Superbowl weekend idea was actually mentioned in an interview with Dana but I cant remeber where I seen it. He was referring to the fact that Randy needs to heal(broken arm) and wouldn’t be able to fight til then.

I can’t see any reason it wouldn’t come to pass. The biggest names in the sport. While the sport is at an all-time high or rise. It all makes sense for it to come down this way.

I agree with those who say he’s signed. It makes too much sense. With the higher-than-normal exposure UFC 75 will receive (takes place in England, free TV for U.S. fans, French MMA celeb fighting Cro Cop, etc.), it’s the perfect opportunity. The Affliction co-promotion is a convenient coincidence, and a nice little “cover” between now and Saturday should the UFC attempt to quash rumors.

If he isn’t signed, I won’t jump off a bridge. I only care as far as it concerns a potential match between Fedor and Couture. But that’s it.

maybe he wants to feel and taste what’s the ufc’s like and to see if it’s worth to sign in and being part of the ufc, this is a good thing cuz the event gonna be a hell of a show which would impress Fedor thinking “hell yeah I wanna be in the ufc” and this is a great chance him to show the world who is Fedor’s made out of, this would chance the face of the mma world.

Shogun
Wanderlei
we would have never had babalu
gracie
Ruas
St. Pierre
Noguerra
Fedor
Sakuraba (one of my favorite fighters of all time)

The list goes on and on

MMA is a great sport because it actually involves participants from all over the world. What other sports can we say that about? maybe tennis, and as of lately the NBA

watch Fedor vs. noguerra at Pride’s Body blow (noguerra displayed the most impressive chin that I have ever seen in my whole life, even better than cabbage and Fujita because Minotauro miraculously made it to a decision)
or Fedor vs. Heath herring at Pride’s Championship Choas 2

Randy is not gonna b able to take many of those punches

Same here. Fedor is old news until he signs. Hard to consider him the best until he fights the guy with the belt.
Why don’t we ever consider the PRIDE guy as “the guy with the belt”? Why don’t people say that Randy needs to beat Fedor before we consider him the best HW. Where is it written in the MMA Handbook that the UFC belt is the end-all be-all & the measurement of a fighters true abilities? We americans are awfully full of ourselves.
Just forget it Machine, the real fans of us, let it be known that most likely, two of the greatest HW’s arguably THE best, previously seperated by two organizations, will get to compete, and we will now konw, who in fact is the best.
The Anomoly: I guess you’re right man. I’ll grudgingly let it go……..when they pry it out of my cold, dead hands! LOL, seriously, I guess we can’t change their minds…..or can we?

Probably can. I’m just felling lazy haha.
But seriously all must understand. That until now they have all been seperate, with no clear cut way to determine which belt is the greater belt of the better org/competition, even if there is a differance, it is tooooo trivial, now finally, we will get to see who is the best in the world. That is all that matters, there is no way to say Randy ain’t the best cuz he needs to fight Fedor, or Fedor ain’t the best cuz he needs to fight Randy. These guys right now, are the two best, now we will see who is number one. That’s all that matters to me.
I am personally rooting for Randy(the home team) but if ever he was an underdog, it is in THIS fight.

I’m getting tired of all this Fedor bullshit. I agree with so many others who say that if Fedor doesn’t sign with the UFC, he’s creating the possibility of being called a has-been for the rest of his career. The UFC holds the majority of the world’s best HW MMA fighters, so if Fedor is fine with fighting a bunch of no-names, then just fighting a couple of big names over and over again, I say let him do it. In my opinion, from what we know, the UFC is being more than fair with the big man. If it were my money signing him, I sure as hell would want exclusivity, and for sure I wouldn’t want him competing in Russian sambo tournaments where he could be badly injured. OR, I’d sign him with a contract that was LOADED with clauses that adjust his pay according to his performance and ability to fight throughout the term of his contract. So, basically, if he gets hurt or stops winning, that’s it for the lion’s share of his UFC paychecks. Then I’d let him make the decision of whether he wants to fight in those Russian sambo tournaments or not. Give the man choices and let him choose.

I know Fedor’s probably the best HW out there, but everyone loses, and I would love to see the roof come down if Randy Couture were the man to deliver Fedor’s first to him in an octagon on American soil. I can totally see that happening. If anyone can beat Fedor right now, it’s Randy.

No one is indestructible. Fedor is great, but if he doesn’t want to fight in the UFC, I say fuck him and let him go. No one can say the UFC didn’t try their asses off. Just leave the door open. He may return later on, which would give the UFC a heck of a lot more negotiating leverage than they have now as such earnest suitors.
maybe he wants to feel and taste what’s the ufc’s like and to see if it’s worth to sign in and being part of the ufc, this is a good thing cuz the event gonna be a hell of a show which would impress Fedor thinking “hell yeah I wanna be in the ufc” and this is a great chance him to show the world who is Fedor’s made out of, this would chance the face of the mma world.
This actually makes a lot of sense as well, and is an interesting point of view.

I hope Fedor is signing ufc, i dont think we will find out saturday. the second it’s official everyone will know, and if they already signed we would know. plus CRAZY Mark Cuban might get him, he has lot’s of money, probably more then Dana, and the Fertitta’s. If Fedor doesn’t sign ufc he is a pussy. he needs to fight ufc. the best are there. Unless Fedor was juiced up on steroids and he is tryin to get it out his system before he signs? the ufc tests for drugs and pridefc never did, a side from the two vegas bouts.
