Just some quick additional thoughts…

How much of a class act was Couture after Gonzaga’s nose got busted open?

Seriously, I can’t recall how many boxing matches I’ve seen where a guy gets a nasty cut and bleeding like that and the other guy homes in on it and makes it the entire focus.

Randy could’ve easily started playing a game of fist tag zeroing in on Gonzaga’s nose but he didn’t. I guess you could say Randy pretty much knew he had Gonzaga hurt and didn’t need to go there but if he had the fight would’ve been over that much quicker. Ref Dean to Gonzaga… I’m sorry man, Randy just knocked your nose off this cannot continue. It could’ve gone that way but Randy came to fight this man out not mutilate him, class act.

Randy Couture is definitively a tough act to follow let alone hope to defeat. I wish the fight with Gonzaga hadn’t come down to a nose though. I hate fights where you get a freak accident like what happened here early on. The minute Gonzaga had to work on mouth breathing and spitting blood to avoid swallowing it, the match became distinctly lop-sided.

This isn’t a knock on Couture at all but if you note the look on his face when the fight is stopped, it wasn’t a woohoo! I just owned Gonzaga!!! He looked a little more like… ok I got this one. I think Randy, as usual, came prepared for what should’ve been a more grueling battle. Instead it pretty much ended up being a lot of holding on the part of Gonzaga.

Which given his injury and difficulty with it made sense, which is why I hate to see injuries like that come at the start of a fight. Had Gonzaga not taken the unintentional head blow to the nose on Couture’s takedown, I think the fight would’ve gone very differently but still in Randy’s favor.

As it was, Gonzaga was trying to hold his way through it after the nose blow. Ever so often he tried to land something hard enough to open Randy up or get him dazed so he could get something going. Randy took it all and kept coming. Took his arm getting a “nightstick fracture” and kept coming. Couture is mma to his core. You could probably break his arm and both his legs and he’d still find a way to fight you.

Gonzaga’s got power and that’s well proven but I don’t think he’s got the heart of a guy like Couture. Would’ve been nice to see that fully tested here and not have him thrown off his game by a busted nose.

The fact the Heath was able to rock Big Nog like that still suprsises me. Nog has taken WAY harder shots than that without flinching.

I think that Vera needs to beat Sylvia and then put him into a #1 contender match. If and only then, can Vera even be mentioned in the same sentence as Randy.

I never said I thought Vera could KO Nog,but now that you mentioned it , I think there is a good posibility ,because Sloppy HH did (well should have) and IMHO Vera’s alot better. Why would Vera be so frustrated if he fought Randy? Why does Chuck do good against wrestlers where alot of other stikers fail? Because he has good wrestling, it alows him to avoid the takedown and impose his striking. Brandon is an exellent wrester( I believe he was picked an alternate for the 2000 olimpics) with very dangerous stiking. Lastly Vera dosen’t have to be better than Nog, to be more dangerous against Couture.

Regardless, here’s the skinny:Gabriel Gonzaga — “Napao” must have his broken nose cleared by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) physician or he can’t compete until February 22, 2008. The minimum suspension will last until October 25, 2007, and there’s no contact until October 10, 2007. Alberto Crane — He must have his right medial orbital blowout fracture (Ouch!) cleared by an ophthalmologist or there is no contest until February 22, 2008. The minimum suspension will last until October 25, 2007, and there’s no contact until October 10, 2007. Kendall Grove — “Da Spyda” is suspended until October 10, 2007, and there’s no contact for the Hawaiian until September 25, 2007.
