tim sylvia ali

“I’ll be like Muhammad Ali, stick and move, stick and move, shuck and groove. I’m gonna keep sticking and moving, and wait for the elbow spot and try and drop him with something. I don’t know what it’s going to be - maybe a wrench from the crowd – but I’ll hit him with something.”

– Brandon Vera finally comments on his long-awaited return to the Octagon in a recent FightNetwork.com interview. “The Truth” is booked to make a comeback at UFC 77: “Hostile Territory” against former heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia on October 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a bitter management dispute. Not surprisingly, it sounds like he’s chomping at the bit to get back in on the action.

This is fight the UFC wants to build Vera and escort Sylvia out..Dana is hoping Vera drops Tim..Vera is more of marketable fighter then in Sylvia..When Sylvia was Champ..and was the main event I for sure didn’t care.. The truth is Vera and the truth is Tim was the UFC most underrated HH champ ever..my thing with him..is that he is doofy. hey..we all have our opinions..personally I think Couture did him a favor by beating him..he doesn’t have to lose bad to Cro cop or Gonzaga..even Big Nog would hurt him..lets not forget ( cross our fingers ) Fedor..if ever added to the mix..Sylvia will never hold gold..with this type of talent pool in the UFC.

I expet vera to systematically pick sylvia apart!

This should really be a great fight.
Vera is going to want to:
- show that the UFC made the right choice in not giving him the finger when his manager fooked him around
- show that he is the real deal and is worthy of being in the HW division since it has gone through such an upheaval since he last fought

Sylvia is going to want to:
- show that he’s still HW champion material
- show the UFC that he should have been given similar opportunities that past champions have at reclaiming their glory (Hughes, Franklin, Liddell)
- show that he can finish fights and that he’s changed from the dull decision-eaking fighter that so many fans got tired of seeing

This should be a war (though I’ve gotten burned in previous statements of this *ala Koscheck/Sanchez*) both fighters have a lot to prove and a lot to lose.

Vera hasn’t been in trouble because he’s outclassed his opponents so far. Sure they haven’t been top guys, but you have to pay your dues before stepping up in class, and Vera has done that. Dude, Tim Sylvia has beat Arlovski twice, although one of the fights sucked; He dominated Monson although he was too cautious to finish him; and he KO’ed Ricco Rodriguez and Gan McGee both in the first round. Sure, he got his ass kicked in his last fight but what I’m trying to say is that he’s “THAT GOOD.” How can you say that any UFC champion in history wasn’t “THAT good”? Especially in today’s MMA when the sport has totally evolved- if you are a UFC champion, you have to be pretty damn good. And by “pretty damn good” I mean you are one of the greatest fighters in the world. If you are the Heavyweight champ, that pretty much means that there are about 6 billion people out there whose asses you could kick. So you should realize how good these guys really are.

I’m not exactly a Sylvia fan, but I respect the guy: He’s tough as nails, strong as an ox, hits like a train, and can take some ridiculous punishment. Thats why he’s still one of the top fighters in the world.

If he could finish Assuerio Silva and Tim couldn’t, he has a decent chance. I wouldn’t want to be the first guy facing Tim after a loss though. Plus Vera hasn’t had a fight since 11/18/06, UFC 65- Bad Intentions. He beat an out-of-shape Frank Mir. He didn’t beat the same Frank Mir that broke Tim’s arm. However he did win in impressive fashion.
Interesting to know Chuck Liddell has already stated his dislike for Brandon Vera. Knowing Chuck is friends with Matt Hughes and some other guys at MFS, I wonder if he’ll give Big Tim some pointers.
Wow. I am not sure what to say. I am overwhelmed by the accomplishment of beating Gan McGee. Who cares? The guy held the belt when the division was weak and the competition level was low. Now things are different. The fight with Monson was a joke and the decision with Arlovski was a joke as well. The fight where Tim knocked out Arlovski was luck. The guy is done. He will never hold the belt in the UFC again. He might want to consider a move to the WEC where he can duck Cro Cop, Big Nog, Heath Herring, Randy Coture, Brandon Vera, and eventually Fedor. Tim “Shart” Sylvia is done.

I think its worth saying again how cool the picture of Mohammed Ali KO’ing Tim Sylvia is. What will we see next, Tim Sylvia country line dancing with a group of senior citizens?

Well, Vera is dealing with pretty close to the best now. Hope he can man up. I’d like to see him become a legit force in the HW.
To be considered an average or above fighter you have to do what Vera or Bisping has done and then time will tell if your a great.
Your statements actually attack each other. In the first post you say he [Vera] shows no signs of even being an average fighter (which I think is a rather ridiculous (thats me being polite) statement considering the way he finishes opponents whoever they may be). Then in your third post you state what Vera has accomplished establishes him as an “avereage or above average fighter”.

?????

How could your opinion change that dramatically during 24 hours. Which one is it?

Listen guys,…there is a BIG difference between a “good” fighter and an “exciting” fighter. At one time, Tito was both as the way Rampage,Chuck,Fedor, and Shogun are today, among many others. Kazushi Sakuraba used to be a perfect example of both. Tim Sylvia is a good fighter. Brandon Vera is both. Therefore, Dana is probably hoping Vera wins. The UFC isn’t stupid…..they know nobody likes Tim. The same way they know nobody likes Tito….they keep them around to help the younger talent make a name(my opinion). Hey, it makes sense don’t it??? Y else would they give Tito to Forrest and Rashad???? The UFC knows certain fighters aren’t as marketable as others!!! That being said…look for Shogun to be champ soon!!!…….oh yeah, Randy is gonna keep it! HOLLALULLIA HOLLA BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s Vera gonna do if he gets hit first and drops? We’ve never seen Vera in any real danger in any of his fights, so if he gets hit hard and Sylvia hits real hard; what’s Vera gonna do?
Going by their previous fights, Vera will likely strike first. Tim likes to feel out his opponents first. What’s Tim going to do when he gets hit by Vera’s KO power. I hope Vera is scared of Tim, because the more scared he is, the faster he takes out his opponent. Some guys run when they are scared, Vera takes on the kill or be killed mentality. My prediction of the fight is, we are going to here Brandon’s favorite words after the fight when Rogan is interviewing him, “Got Em Dizzy”

It’s called confidence, and with his vast array of skills, he should have a ton of it.

ViolentMike and Philqny u both made very accurate and infored statements. We should all just stop arguing with McCenna, he makes the most ridiculous, unproven statements I have ever heard. He talks about Bisping in every single post. im a bisping fan but McCenna is making me hate him. We get it Bispi is the next Ali!

It will be Vera’s toughest fight, I expect him to win and finish Tim. Randy couture has given the mma world the perfect blue print as to beating sylvia. Verra’s striking is better then Randy’s, He does have a very good wrestling background (not as decorated as Randy’s), but effective, and I strong submission game.

I c Verra doing What Randy did, keep tim on his heels, not knowing if he will punch, or shoot for the takedown, work submissions, only difference is Verra’s striking is way more dangerous then Randy’s. Tim is also accustomed to putting a lot of weight on his front leg (in his stand up stance), if Tim Doesnt change that style, Verra will destroy his legs wit nasty leg kicks. I really think Tim is in Big Trouble.

Roll out the excuses big tim! U r comming off of back surgery, u got staph, we know, we know!

How great was the crowd when they booooed tim in the Octagon interveiw when he lost to Randy. “I came into this fight wit injuries” “BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”!
awesome

Translation: Sylvia’s only chance is the proverbial “puncher’s chance”

Vera hasn’t been in trouble because he’s outclassed his opponents so far. Sure they haven’t been top guys, but you have to pay your dues before stepping up in class, and Vera has done that. I’m not sure if Vera has a Sherk-like chin, but if he gets dropped and is not out, his superior BJJ will give him the edge on the ground.
nice one pat! vera will beat sylvia’s ass down!!!
Mir is FINISHED dont even argue that,he hasnt fought big TIM yet has he,he has won 8 fights, one by desicion against a NO-BODY,Bisping on the other hand has won 16 fights(including TUF ones)and he has finished every single one of those,
I should hope Bisping finished all his cans, their combind win - loss record is 79-72, nothing to be proud of. Vera’s opponents have a combind record of 83-39, not great ,but much more impressive. Also Silva lost close decisions to Kongo and Fedors brother and went the distance with Tim Sylvia. Brandon was the only guy to finish Silva since 1999. Vera’s proved more than Bisping has , at least in my eyes.
