Jorge Gurgel (11-2) will return to action before a hometown crowd at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio, against Doug Evans (5-1), according to a recent MySpace bulletin from the former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant.

Here’s the snip:

“To all my fans I would like to announce that I will be fighting Doug Evans at the UFC in Cincinnati on October the 20th. Its a great honor to finally be able to perform in front of my home crowd, students and family. I would like to thank everyone in advance for all the support over the years. I will do my best.”

Gurgel is coming off of a brutal unanimous decision win over Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 last month. During the lightweight war, Gurgel pretty much had his face broken (jaw, facial). He’s apparently well enough to be ready for the October 20 show.

Evans dropped his first and only fight inside the Octagon to the talented Roger Huerta at the TUF 5 Finale in June. And up until he succumbed to a technical knockout (strikes) in round two, he was giving Huerta all he could handle.

Gurgel will join his training partner from the Jorge Gurgel Mixed Martial Arts Academy, Rich Franklin, on the card. “Ace” will look to reclaim his 185-pound belt from the man who defeated him for it at UFC 64, Anderson Silva, almost a year to the day when the two last met.

Not the best card ever, but it’s fairly decent. Im interested to see if Sylvia sucks any worse then he already does. Franklin/Silva fight should be nice.

This card isn’t that bad. McFedries and Silva will put on a good show.

McFedires may not make it back for this one. I think you guys might get to see Sylvia v Vera or Werdum. That should be good. Give it time to develop.

As of Aug 10th, UFC 77 pretty much sucks:

185 belt: Anderson Silva (19-4) vs. Rich Franklin (22-2)

185: Kalib Starnes (8-1-1) vs. Alan Belcher (10-3)*
185: Drew McFedries (6-2) vs. TBA*
Hvy: Tim Sylvia (23-3) vs. TBA*
170: Josh Burkman (8-4) vs. TBA*
205: Stephan Bonnar (10-4) vs. Eric Schafer (7-2-2)*
155: Jorge Gurgel (11-2) vs. Doug Evans (5-1)*
185: Marvin Eastman (14-7-1) vs. Demian Maia (5-0)*

*Fight not officially confirmed by UFC.com

First off, only the title fight is set. Bonnar-Schafer should be interesting if that happens. Sylvia vs. TBA should be good because they SHOULD match him against a quality opponent. Frank Mir is fighting in 74 and if they goes well, maybe he is the TBA… or Vera or Werdum as Legal Eagle suggests. If they give him some cupcake though this card will challenge UFC 72 for weakest of 2007.

all im really looking forward to on this card is to see how sylvia bounces back and Anderson Silva ripping off Franklins head, taking his soul, and sacrificing him to the cow gods. duhh…. obviously.

To salvage this card they need to include the rematch between Tito and Rashad……come on Dana make it happen

You wanna talk steroids ? Since a lot of you love to bash Sean Sherk, how about you take a look at Jorge Gurgel. You all remember him from TUF right ? He is 30 now so that made him like 27 or so when the show aired. He wasn’t as nearly as muscular in 2005 on the show and he was basically a nobody who fought the likes of marshmellow Danny Abbadi. Now all of a sudden the UFC wants to put him on PPV events ?

Could it be that he did whatever it took to get to the grand stage and Dana knows it and this is his reward for juicing ? He is definitly bigger and certainly more shredded. At 30 years old, you dont exactly hit your peak with natural weight lifting. Just my opinion but hes on something.

No one wants to fight in Ohio except guys like Franklin who are from the area. Why else would this card blow whale c0ck ? After party at Matt Hughes farm ?

I was gonna say the same thing. He looks ripped, and his shoulders look gigantic!

But you also need to take into account that he had a severe knee injury during TUF. Therefor, he couldnt train to his full potential. PLUS, he was fighting as a WW. He is a natural LW, so he basically put on some fat for TUF. Now that he is fighting a 155, he was able to get rid of that ‘fat’ from fighting at 170. So of course he is going to look more shredded at 155. I don’t think he does steroids, but what do I know.

In the Mike Swick thread someone had mentioned that they think that people will accuse him of steroids once they see him because he will look shredded at 170, since he was a skinny 185er. However, I personally think that he will come out looking like a shaved-coke-headed Nicole Richie going through chemotherapy. If you thought Jason Black looked bad, I can’t wait to see Swick, and Joe Silva’s comment. ‘Abe Lincoln with Rabies’ was a classic.

me and you are on the same page. i hope anderson silva totally destroys rich franklin. maybe he will write another book after the fight called “How to Take a Knee the Face for Dummies” or “I Saw My Own Death When Silva Destroyed Marquardt, The True and Horrifying Biography of Rich Franklin”
LOL!!!!!

Hahaha Violent Mike that was a funny ass line. That was me by the way who mentioned that steroid rumors may arise after the Swick fight at 170. I could be wrong but I would think he would come out looking retardedly toned up. The Gurgel situation though, I understand he was at 170 and had to put on weight for the show, he did have a small belly on it. But his entire demeanor from 2005 plus the fact that he is extremely more muscular makes me think and raise eyebrows if you will.

St least Sean Sherk, Arvlovski, and guys like that always looked huge. Gurgel on the other hand resembles a bigger Roger Huerta I guess you can say. three years ago he was more of a Danny Abbadi lol.

Kevin, actually you are more right than I thought. I didn’t take a close look at the picture of Jorge at the top of this thread. He does look ripped. He even looks like he’s slightly tinted green. Dare I say, the Brazilian Incredible Hulk?

I doubt you will see much difference with Swick. Didn’t he weigh in at 181 against Okami? I seem to remember him saying afterwards that he doesn’t cut weight to get there, 181 - 185 is his natural weight. He said he will now have to stop being spoiled and start cutting like everyone else. I will try to find the source where I read that, but if that is his natural weight, he won’t look much different.

Let me correct myself from before, Swick said that he weighed 181 in the octagon, not at the weigh in.

I know a guy who knows Doug personally, and he says Doug rejected the fight, because he’s injured.

This card aint that bad. Its a timing thing we are getting to see alot of the fighters we want to see fight before this. And it might take awhile to get to the afterparty at “Matt Hughes farm” since he lives in Iowa not Ohio. Its not quite the same state. I live in Ohio and in the country. Beats llving in some sh!thole city.

thank you thor…i was about to correct him myself on that one. nut yeah, gurgel blows…i watched his fight with abadi a while back and did anyone else notice that he unloaded on abadi with all he had the whole fight but abadi’s face looked completely fine afterwards? it looked like gurgel had hit him with fucking pillows…possibly the worst striker in the ufc. and about nobody wanting to fight in ohio….i seriously doubt any fighter takes fights based on the location (and by the way ufc 68 IN OHIO set a north american attendance record so i don’t think people would mind fighting here). Weak card though…the TBA’s against sylvia and mcfedries better be good
