“A popular mixed-martial arts fighter on Friday pleaded no contest to reduced charges of allegedly punching a Honolulu police officer. B.J. Penn was originally charged with assaulting an officer, which is a felony. He pleaded to a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault on Friday instead. Penn was involved in a large fight outside a Waikiki nightclub in 2005, police said. As an officer broke up the fight, police said Penn punched him in the face. Penn’s attorney said he does not expect his client to receive jail time when he is sentenced in December.”

I’d say using steroids to get an advantage in a sanctioned fight is much worse than getting in a brawl outside of a night club. I wish it had more information about whether he knew it was a cop he was punching, or if he was just swinging for the fences.

One is cheating in competition. One is unrelated to the sport.

Who has more of a chance of getting seriously hurt? Pro fighter, fighting juiced pro fighter, or joe blow from nightclub who doesn’t know how to defend himself ,taking a BEATING from BJ. A pro fighter should never be swinging for the fences in PUBLIC.

I have a friend who is from Hawaii and his girl is from Hilo and knows BJ family, and this comes as no surprise. He is defiant and his family is involved with the local government.
Supposedly BJ has quit drinking recently so maybe he was feeling no pain that night and swung for the fences? Whatever the story is I hope he stays in the gym, works hard and wins the 155 title.

That is fairly difficult to believe considering he pled no contest…
who knows how it all went down. it’s very possible that the cop grabbed bj and he instinctively reacted without seeing who it was.

That is what his lawyer claimed. The original story I heard back when it happened said penn was maced, then instinctively punched the cop, cause he didn’t know what was happening. My best guess is he ran through the crowd, shoved a cop away without realizing it, got maced, then punched the cop for macing him. Hence, the no contest, but no felony charge
I’m trying to find a good reference from right after the incident happened. I’m just going by what I remember (the mace story), so I could just be talking out of my ass. I’ll link whatever I find here

Things happen. The people you are with are in a brawl are you supposed to just watch? No, your loyalty kicks in and common sense goes out the window. Nobody is perfect. For one, apples and oranges, for two, it was around two years ago, alot for BJ has changed since then, sucks he is still dealing with the past bad choices, but he is no Hypocryte, that word is irrelevant here.
And for 3, there is no way ever, that Sherk could hurt BJ in any way. It is already over. I heard Sherk actually placed the steriods in there on purpose, so this would happen, just to dely fighting BJ, cuz he’s scared hahahaa.
