Robbie Lawler TUF 6
Assistant coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 were recently revealed and former UFC middleweight hopeful Robbie Lawler is among those to lend his services.

Now the current ICON Middleweight Champion after beating the snot out of Frank Trigg, “Ruthless” — a product of the Miletich camp — will assist former welterweight champion and TUF 6 head coach, Matt Hughes.

Lawler is joined by Matt Pena and Marc Fiore.

On the Long Island side of the fence, the opposing coach for TUF 6 and the current 170-pound titleholder, Matt Serra, will be supported by TUF 4 castmate, student and UFC fighter Pete “Drago” Sell, as well as boxing coach Ray Longo.

Serra, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt under Renzo Gracie, credits Longo for fine-tuning the standup skills that led to the unlikely destruction of Georges St. Pierre at UFC 69 in April of this year.

TUF 6 debuts on a new day this season (Wednesday) and features 16 up-and-coming welterweight prospects. To catch the first episode tune-in to the Spike television network on September 19 at 11:00 p.m. ET.

UFC Fight Night 11 will be broadcast beforehand, which is the reason for the late start. For the rest of the season, TUF 6 will air each Wednesday at 10 p.m. until its conclusion.

The TUF 6 Finale is scheduled for December 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, Serra and Hughes are set to battle little more than two weeks later at the final pay-per-view (PPV) show of 2007 on New Year’s Eve weekend.

For more information about the coaches and the upcoming season check out this press release.

I personally can’t stand the Militech camp. They all seem like a bunch of bullies to me. I look forward to Serra and Drago coaching there side to victory. I cant wait. Also cant wait for Title match. It seems like its been forever since UFC has put on a show.

Damn….. no Frank Trigg on Serra’s side. I was really pulling for that. If it was Hughes and Lawler vs Serra and Trigg that would have been absolutely bananas. Too bad.

would be cool to have lawler vs drago at the undercard of that event, highly doubt it will happen since lawler is locked in his Icon contract

damn i was at the the Blaisdell when Lawler beat the crap out of Trigg(Randy Couture was even in his corner that night, while Jens Pulver was in the corner of Lawler)Although I also don’t care for the Militech Camp, I would love to see Lawler back in the UFC again. I believe he is a much more mature fighter than he was before. There are many fighters in ICON who desrve another shot in the UFC: Robbie Lawler, Renato “Charuto” Verissimo, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, etc.

Sweet, Im glad to here Lawler is returning. Cant wait to see how he fairs in the middleweight division. Robbie Lawler and Evan Tanner should make their UFC returning debuts aginst each other. That would be sweet.

When they announce the TUF6 fighter line-up, I’m going to do a search on each guy and see what pops up. Primarily I’m thinking about when they had Bisping and everyone else and Kendall Grove too. In some seasons they’ve brought in a couple guys who are seasoned fighters and surround them with bags to fill out the line-up.

It doesn’t look like Lawler will be fighting in the UFC anytime soon because of his ICON contract. I’m sure UFC allows the coaches to bring in anybody they want as an assistant because of the importance of having an assistant who knows the coach’s routine, etc. But, since Lawler is under contract for another organization, don’t look for Lawler to get much camera time. I wouldn’t be surprised if UFC blurs out his face whenever he does accidentally get in the shot.

I am looking foward to this. Hughes is a winner and a skilled champion. Serra is a cheeseball who is heading into the final seconds of of fifteen minutes of fame. When they fight, Serra will be exposed as a middle of the pack welterweight. Hughes will be unfazed by Serra’s game, and he will dominate him. If I were one of the guys on Serra’s team I would be pissed because I could have been trained by the greatest welterweight of all time, rather than a disrespectful mook from Long Island.

Dude come one…… Serra is better then that and everyone knows it. Serra isnt some chump who was born yesterday whos gonna go in there and just d!ck around. Hes a capable fighter and has been in the the UFC since 2001.

Whats Matt Hughes gonna do? Take Serra to the ground so that Serra can put on a JJ clinic for the viewers? No wait…. I think Hughes should stand up with Serra because Hughes’ standup is far above everyone elses….. like we’ve seen before right? Maybe Serra can knock out Hughes’ last front tooth so he can have all fake front teeth like Henderson. lol

My prediction…
This will def be a ground fight. Hughes will look for the takedown early. Serra will either catch him in a submission or Hughes will lay on him looking for the decision.

Hughes did some serious ground in pound against Royce Gracie’s JJ. What makes you think that “Matt Serra” of all people is going to submit Hughes? Hughes will lay on himand wait for a decision?

This could be a better fight then most people think. serra’s ju jitsu is great, Now I hate Matt hughes, but his ju jitsu is no joke either… He has used very advance ju jitsu skills to win, more thyen a couple of his fights… It could turn into a ju jitsu clinic, with hughes incorporating some G n P also.
However I wouldnt be surprised if serra pulls out the upset

Agreed John. But there is still no way you can say Matt Hughes Ju Jitsu is better then Serra’s. You can say Hughes is a better wrestler but not better at JJ.

Im predicting a Serra victory.

I am going to call it now … The welterweight winner of TUF 6 will come from Hughes’ team. I say this not because Hughes is the Phil Jackson of MMA coaching, but rather the coach that Hughes is bringing in (Matt Pena) he has already coached young fighters on TUF with Jens Pulver and all of Jens’ guys showed improvement with their hands, oh and coindicently, Nate Diaz won the whole thing.

Regardless of Manny’s injury during the fight, no 5′ 5″ guy is going to be a force in the UFC, so the better upside guy won.

I think you’re correct John. I believe Dana had said something about having to definitely replace one announcer if they purchased Pride (obviously it was a pre-purchase comment). The article made it pretty apparent that Dana was referring to Trigg.

I hope Nick Diaz magically appears halfway through episode 7 and one punch KO’s Lawler again. That would be great.
There are many fighters in ICON who desrve another shot in the UFC: Robbie Lawler, Renato “Charuto” Verissimo, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, etc.
I have seen quite a few Mayhem Miller fights. He is totally UFC worthy. He only had 1 UFC fight, and that was against GSP (coming off his loss to Hughes). It was an AWESOME Fight. Of course he lost to GSP, but it was a 3 round decison. Mayhem can take some serious punishment and keeps on coming. He was literally smiling as he got his head beat in. Plus he has PERSONALITY. Something that so many fighters these days are lacking. Plus, Mayhem holds victories over Lawler and Dennis Kang.

C’mon now. Royce looked like a Brazilian Skeletor. I would hope that Serra has more power than Royce.

LOL…the list of TUF6 contestants is already available, but the moderators of this blog obviously are not going to allow me to tell you where to find them (link or no link) since they’ve already deleted my first two comments where I’ve attempted to show you where they are. I guess you’re on your own in finding out which competing UFC blog already has them posted. I take it that the philosophy here on dealing with the competition is to simply not allow the names of the competition to even be uttered. Freedom of speech Bush-style…ya gotta love it!

While I am not fond of many of the MFS fighters (and Lawler being one of them)its hard not to admit that he is an exciting fighter…win lose or draw. I think the weak UFC MW division is in need of a real contender. After the Silva/Franklin rematch there really isn’t anyone on the horizon for a title shot. Martin Kampmann is the next obvious choice…no need for explanation. Terry Martin is prob next in line after him, but he is still a couple of solid fights away. He needs to be tested against a top tier fighter. A fight with Nathan Marquardt should prob happen. It would be a good way to see if Martin is worthy of a shot. Besides him who else is there? Marq and Okami have basically eliminated themselves from title shots for quite some time. Grove isn’t near ready…enter Lawler. I think the UFC should have Lawler and Pete Sell fight at the TUF finals or on the Serra/Hughes undercard. Both are competing coaches (lawler on team hughes…sell on team serra). It makes perfect sense. Lawler wins and he is back in the UFC mix ans set to make a run at the title.
