Mike Terry (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is the chief instructor at the Southside Jiu-jitsu Academy. Although a talented fighter, he refuses to compete in professional bouts: “Competition weakens the fighter.” Instead he trains dedicated students in the art of self-defense: bodyguards, cops, soldiers. At his brother-in-law’s club one evening, Mike saves a famous action star (Tim Allen) from a severe beating. His defense of Frank leads to a job in the film industry, but other events conspire to force Mike to participate in a prize fight. An American samurai film set the world of mixed martial arts, David Mamet’s “Redbelt” is a story about the limits of a single man’s integrity.

Frank Shamrock, he tries to fight an actual contendar, and Mike saves him.
tim allen as in tim the tool man taylor? since when is he an action star?
David Mamet makes some great films/plays (Glengarry Glen Ross, The Spanish Prisoner, Spartan), and I guess he actually trains BJJ, so I am willing to wait and see how this turns out.
Frank must be the name of the “famous action star”…the character Tim Allen plays.
I don’t know about this movie…I’d like to believe it’s going to be good, but I’m skeptical. Why fictionalize something that’s attraction is that it is so real, so gritty, so physical?
This movie will be to MMA what “Gleaming the Cube” was to skateboarding - an avenue to define an entire niche sport to the general public in a thoroughly humiliating way. This is one of those movies that you wish you could stop them from making.
“Competition weakens the fighter..”.
That sounds like some eighties-kung-fu-movie cliché, and not something anyone involved with modern jiu-jitsu or MMA would ever dream of saying.
Why didn´t they hire Pat Morita to play the chief instructor?

You’re right man. Also what I thought was pretty funny when it says the instructor wont compete because ‘competition weakens the fighter.’ What a f-ing joke this movie is going to be. They should title this movie “Joe Somebody 2.”

Should they dig him up?

Yes. He should fight Chuck Liddell. UFC 77: Zombies. Maybe not.
It might not be terrible. Chiwetel is a great actor, and he’s shown this in movies like Children of Men and Serenity. It’s possible that it won’t suck…possible.

Matt Hughes vs. The Predator!
Fedor vs. The Terminator!
I’ve said too much already. I’m calling my agent.
Tim Allen? is it a comedy?
The more i learn about this movie the lower my expectations fall. This is going to be a hugely unneccesarily bad movie. There are so many preexisting great stories in mma that they could just copy. I would be way more interested in the story of a martial artist trying to feed his family in the octagon (ala nick diaz), or a kid from hilo and his quest to be the best, or even just a story about wrestler trying to find a pro avenue for his life ambition (henderson). If done in 8mile or million dollar baby style it would be a legit movie. But no lets not stick with the formula of all great sports movies, no lets just make some unrealistic shit up and put tim allens fat ass in there for no reason. Honestly Tim allen, what a waste of money he will be, I guarantee his name wont bring in 5% of this movies ‘ audience.
Man one of the guys in the photo looks a bit like Bj Penn but older.
I think they should have teamed up jackie chan and chris tucker with tim allen.
