Former number one UFC light heavyweight contender Renato “Babalu” Sobral (27-7) was arrested early Saturday morning for spitting on a bouncer at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa, Fla., according to Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com.
Details are sketchy at this point, but here’s what we know right now:
“Renato Sobral de Cunha was arrested at 4:15 a.m. and released yesterday on charges of Battery and Trespassing in Tampa. He was at the WFC event at the Florida State Fairgrounds, and was arrested at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa. We don’t have any other details except it is believed he spit on a bouncer.”
Babalu is riding a two-fight losing streak (Liddell, Lambert) after going on a 10-fight, nearly three-year unbeaten tear to earn a rematch with then UFC 205-pound champion Chuck Liddell at UFC 62 in August 2006.
The Brazilian grappler was quickly dispatched by the “Iceman” in round one — just like their first encounter (sans the head kick) at UFC 40.
Looking to get back on track, Babalu returned to the Octagon at UFC 68 in March 2007 against Jason Lambert. Unfortunately for Sobral, “The Punisher” ended his night early once again
courtesy of a devastating second round punch.
Babalu is slated to compete against David Heath at UFC 74: “Respect” a little more than a month away on August 25.
It’s puzzling that a top fighter would be involved in such a situation so close to fight time. When more details emerge perhaps this will make a little more sense.
Stay tuned.

I suppose he has to make headlines some how because it looks like he’s not getting wins anytime soon.
Its unfortunate, but Babalu seems to be sliding back down.
How come everybody looks their worst in a mug shot.
i remember screaming at the tv when he was fighting lambert “why are you standing! take it down”
he beat himself against liddell and lambert, deciding to stand. what a genius.
Babalu is still a top guy. Everyone gets in trouble once in a while. I hope he beats on Heath, who is overrated.
Damn shame. Sobral is (was?) a good, enjoyable fighter who really needs to get back on track. I’m not sure this arrest means he needs to get his life together. I’ve had a few similar run-ins where some debating with a police officer ensured I didn’t have my own awful mugshot taken. Hopefully, he can get back in the gym and give Heath a good fight.
P.S. My only real criticism: dude, who wears a shirt with their own name on it? Sorry, it just seems a little lame for fighters to wear their own merchandise.
Spitting on someone is battery, it dosent sound like he punched anybody but it’s still not good for his image.
Comedy.
The mugshot would have been a good picture for the caption contest, what with him wearing a “Babalu” shirt in it.
Honestly, who hasn’t spit on bouncers? This “arrest” is such a non-issue.
He isn’t hunting for headlines.
Do fans expect every fighter to be on their best behaviour every moment of every day?
It’s not possible. Scrutiny over everything they say or do has tripled since MMA exploded
recently. Let them be.
I’m a huge Sobral fan but even I know that he’s not the brightest guy around.
So what?
anybody else find it a little humorous that he is wearing a t-shirt with his name on that Mug-Shot?
As long as this does not turn into the NFL and having arrests every week in UFC, I think I will be happy.

Because usually they are drunk as hell( and did something stupid) and taken in the middle of the night.
Once you become a professional fighter to hit someone outside of contest is legally considered assault with a deadly weapon. He definitely didn’t punch anyone or else he would be facing a prison sentence. This is nothing, the bouncer was probably an off duty cop or something.
I thought it was funny that “Babalu” wasn’t listed under his aliases.
Seriously though, these are Professional Fighters not Professional Golfers. Expecting a fighter to be a world class gentleman in every situation is a tough task. We’re talking about someone who is training (or should be) at their peak to beat the crap out of another individual. That’s gotta put you on edge when a bouncer gives you flak at the door.
I’m not saying he was right by any means but, we can’t expect Pro Fighters to be choir boys.

Hah , you been watching too many movies … I cant tell you how many fights ive heard about mma and pro boxers getting into fights outside of clubs and bars and NOT one has ever been charged with assault with a deadly weapon..
Cool too see his walking around weight is 225 , thats pretty big.
Plus this happened on Indian property with the Indian police department. They are useally pretty harsh and nontalkative when it comes to dealing with these situations.

Look how many fighters ruin their image, this really is no big deal image wise, compared to the shit that Tito and Liddel have done.he deffenetly didnt punch anyone, he would still be locked up, i just hope him being on a losing streak, it dosn’t effect the 74 contract.

No doubt maybe the bouncer was a dick or something. What if the bouncer was Kimbo and you spat on him?
well if he’s out getting tossed in the jake he’s not training properly. Heath must be happy to see this “news story”.

exactly right
damn, i used to go to that place all the time when it first opened up…wish i was there last night to see that shit though

It seems like this guy can’t seem to keep it together. Too bad because he is so talented
Honestly, who hasn’t spit on bouncers?
screw you buddy! haha
I have to say though bouncers are sucks Dicks and think that their the man standing outside of a nightclub and they would only acknowledge people they can get tips out of and they would always act using their ego but can’t fight for shit..

I think this would be a good time for Dana White to lay down the law: if you want to fight in the UFC, you will be a fucking choir boy. UFC has worked hard on its image and the contrasts between MMA and other professional sports is one thing that attracts people to MMA. We like to see skilled beat downs, but I’ve always thought it was cool that many of these guys are well educated, worked another job during at least part of their professional careers and are generally unlike the Porsche-driving, gun-toting, bling-slinging, wife-beating scumbags that are so common in the NFL, MLB and NBA. Drug use is starting to creep onto the scene (or at least becoming more publicized, thanks to Nick Diaz and Melvin Guillard), so this is a good time for the UFC to remind fighters that a good image, in and out of the Octagon, is in the long-term best interest of the sport and everyone involved with it.
I wish I would’ve gone to the casino that night. I decided not to go at the last minute and went to the movies instead.
He should have been arrested for wearing a shirt with his own name on it. I love Babalu but damn, get your head out of your ass and get back to the gym so you can get some respect back. This makes me wonder how seriously he is taking his career. I hate to say it but after his next fight he will probably be out of the UFC.
LoL that police report on him was actually funny to read.
His build is medium. If he is medium then im microscopic i guess.
Been there, down that but wasn’t wearing my own t-shirt.
correction. Been there done that, but wasn’t wearing my own t-shirt. Bud lights are affecting the typing.
Spitting on someone is battery, it dosent sound like he punched anybody but it’s still not good for his image.
I can only imagine what they would have charged him with if he actually landed some strikes. “Use of force with deadly weapons”?
I wonder if it’ll end up on thesmokinggun.com?
Most bouncers are dicks. THey think there job is to beat people up when its really to prevent fights. Every bouncer I’ve ever know always tells anyone who listens about how many people they “destroyed” last night. They’re just bullies on ego trips. I hate them as you can tell. Go Babalu!
Spitting on someone is battery, it dosent sound like he punched anybody but it’s still not good for his image.
Yeah the charges get sensational, like you said spitting being battery and then he was trespassing because the bouncer told him to leave and he didn’t. Not like he did a breaking and entering on the place.
They’ll probably add “sexual assault” if it turns out he kicked the bouncer’s ass.
I love how on his arrest papers it says he has a medium build

no, my job is to hit on girls, im a lover not a fighter.
The mugshot and arrest report are absolutely hysterical. Who cares about the highlight reel head kick, the mugshot will make him infamous.
They could sprinkle some crack on him and get him for that too. Seriously, check him for steroids too.

I totally agree with you. As an athlete, or fighter in the UFC you are representing the company and its image. People who view the sport as barbaric and that the fighters are thugs, seeing someone get arrested doesnt help their view of the sport.
How come everybody looks their worst in a mug shot.
If you got arrested would you make sure to have your hair combed, brush your teeth, and smile? It’s not a glamour shot or a time to look happy.
What a tool, wearing his own T-shirt. That’s like wearing a t-shirt of the band you are going to see to the actual concert.
This guy seems to be really off track, ashame to as he is/(was?) such a good fighter.
Man, I hate shitty ass bouncers….he probably deserved to get spit on, they’re exactly like security guards and pigs, give em a little flash light and an ear piece and they think they rule the universe, screw that, good job… next time spit on the cops too. and fuck being a choir boy, do we really want a bunch of sissys fighting in the ufc, a bunch of josh koschecks…..nope
What a tool, wearing his own T-shirt. That’s like wearing a t-shirt of the band you are going to see to the actual concert.
I don’t see the connection here. I remember back in the day, at an ICP show, if you didn’t have any sort of pyschopatic merchandise on, you were the first person to get smacked across the face while in the pit. I think its much more comparable to wearing a t-shirt with a picture of your mom on it.
about 6 months or so back a pro rugby player went into the stands and attacked a fan. the international rugby board banned him from playing professional rugby for life.
granted about a month ago they reduced his sentence from 6 months but under the condition he would never play professionally again, so as to not bar him from coaching. but still the message was sent.
He spit on a bouncer, who gives a sh*t! He had a bad day, some punk a** prolly bumped in to him, the bartender made him a weak drink, and so he wants to spit on the bouncer. Sure, he shouldn’t be out partying before a fight, but who says he can’t? The “Paris Hilton” phenomenon has got to stop.

you went to an ICP concert? lol
i think one of the reasons people wear their own shirt is because they usually have tons of them… i screened printed tshirts for a few years and designed a couple of shirts to sell when i needed a few bucks.. and to this day i still wear those tshirts simply for the fact that i have so many of them.

There in lies the problem, you attended an ICP show.
What the h3ll was he doing in Tampa? Therin lies the problem. Tampa……
David Heath is going to run all over this guy. He is a light heavyweight David Loiseau that has gone from great to terrible.
There in lies the problem, you attended an ICP show.
I have seen many, many, many bands perform live. None of them come close to putting on a performance like ICP. Not only have I seen them, but I’ve seen them close to 40 times.
Enjoy your Elton John concerts
I remember at UFC 55 and some other events Forrest Griffin came out to an ICP song. IT WAS AWESOME! JUGGALO!
Yes indeed. Forrest came out to the ICP song “Take It” during the TUF 1 season finale as well as his next 2 fights in the UFC. Maybe you just need to get smacked around by Violent J, Shaggy 2 Dope and Forrest Griffin for a few minutes, and then get whipped across the face with a hundred 2 litre bottles of Faygo!
JUGGALO, WOOT WOOT!
Who took the chicken off the plate and put it in the fridge?
ICP is the worst band in the history of music. Go listen to some real metal
What the h3ll was he doing in Tampa? Therin lies the problem. Tampa……
What you have against Tampa? At least gives us a reason…
Only thing worse is having your name tattoed on yourself.

SHAGGY 2 DOPE DID!!!
