Sherdog.com — the same site that reported the potential showdown between BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez at UFC 74 earlier today — is now backing off its claim.

The fight will not happen … not on August 22, anyway.

Here’s the update:

“B.J. Penn’s camp informed Sherdog.com that the 28-year-old Hawaiian would not face Diego Sanchez in August, though the possibility wasn’t ruled out for a later date.”

According to the latest report, the Sanchez bout had not been offered to Penn for UFC 74. Furthermore, there is still the possibility that Penn remains at lightweight for his next bout.

That seems like the smart move, especially if “The Prodigy” does indeed score the winner of the 155-pound title bout between Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca this weekend at UFC 73.

Penn plans to announce his plans for the near future on his Web site — BJPenn.com — when a decision is made.

Of course we’ll keep you posted. But for now the tantalizing Penn-Sanchez showdown appears is something for which we will have to wait.

Don’t forget that Sanchez was rumored to be fighting Hayato Sakurai before this premature report emerged this morning. There’s no telling if that fight is still on, or, just more speculation.

For the sake of everyone here, let’s hope the next announcement is legit. Stay tuned.

penn just wants to make it a question point so that everyone will go to his website for the offical announcement. He classisly pluged it after his fight with pulzer refusing to take after the bout. If he does that for a paperview fight where your paying $40 he should get heavily fined.

Damn. would have been a decent fight actually. Would kind of make sense for them since they are both working towards the title shots. Who knows. I think Penn would have won, even though I can’t stand him personally.

Now you’ll have people blaming the UFC for getting us excited and not delivering the goods. Here’s a thought, maybe wait till the UFC announces it before you state it as fact. That’s probably not good for your traffic though huh.

For one, every site like this is posting it, sherdog did obviously, that’s what these sites do, post all the if’s and maybes of the behind the scenes, so we have a better idea of going on.
State it as fact Tommy? Are you accusing Mania of that? Did you not see the PHATTY question mark on the end of that arcticle? Some fact eh?

That’s what these sites do? What do you mean? Take erroneous information and take it and post it on their site, then have the audacity to say Dana needs to get his stuff together? When there is no news do sites make up BS to have something new to post so the readers will keep the traffic up. This has happened for awhile repeatedly. Was Ken an if? Maybe Dan Severn will be fighting Mike Tyson next. If Sherdog stated that will it be posted here in under 5 minutes? What I accused mania of being he deleted before it was ever posted.

Who cares, its fun to talk about potential match ups. If we waited on the UFC every time we’d have only 2-4 weeks to debate the topic. Its no big deal its not like people live and die on these stories. Its all in good fun, and Penns camp sounded like their not dismissing the idea all together. It makes for good debate, i like the posting of stories like this no matter how legitimate it gets the juices flowing and keeps interest up in between ppv’s.

You claim I’m posting erroneous info so I can bash Dana White? I don’t see how you supported that allegation with what you just wrote. But whatever. And I do make mistakes, I’m not perfect dude. But I sure as hell don’t hide them. For some one who “doesn’t give a fuck” you’ve been rather animated today. I think 90 percent of what you say on this site is great, but if you want to be a dick, then don’t come back. I really don’t care. You’re not as important as you think you are Tommy. This is over.

None of us here are important to the sport. It was here before us and will be here long after. Guess you didn’t like feeling unimportant when the UFC told you to take a hike with no explaination. I really wanted to see this fight. One of my MMA buds and I discussed it today, but we were skeptical of the timing. BJ gaining 15 in 63 days is what made us doubt the “rumor” was true.
With that said, sites like this inform fans of potential matchups days, sometimes weeks, before the UFC. Most rumors start with the fighters declaring upcoming opponents in interviews before the UFC inks the deal. Without MMA news/blogs sites we cavemen would be stumbling aimlessly about in the dark until Dana the firegod lights the way to the next events fight card. Besides, we would miss all the fireworks like the Tommy/Mania exchange.
I have to side with Mania that the namecalling and some comments have reached an unfortunate threshold of late. The postings just in the past few weeks have reached an all-time low. I will give Tommy the benefit of the doubt since the 4th Celebration may have involved a few adult beverages. Still, Tommy makes some good points about how MMA sites have gone wild with some rumors. Dana has been quoted recently discussing how he hates Sherdog for putting out disinformation and in Jesses’ recent interview, Houston Alexander said “I have no idea how this stuff gets started. I don’t know man there’s a UFC blog that has me doing this and doing that, they have me fighting people before I even get into the cage. I wouldn’t mind fighting him, but it was nothing more than a rumor.” I wouldn’t stereotype ufcmania.com with all the other MMA sites, but it could be the reason for the UFC’s denial of Fitch’s sponsorship.

Anyway, I like the rumors. It gets a debate going which is the whole point of these types of sites. However, there is no crying in blogging.

Also, I’m glad this fight isnt happening right now. Penn deserves a title shot and I would still like to see him bulk up a bit for the heavier weight class. Ten more lbs and he would be at the top of the welterweight division in no time.

I feel BJ is much better off going for the light weight title, get a great strength and conditioning coach, and when he’s a solid 170 go after the welter weight title. The man needs to focus, he’ll never conquer any division if he keeps hopping all over the place. I can’t deny Penn’s talent but he is a little too eccentric for his own good.
