Debut of Cro Cop. Return of Randy. Death of Aldana. Purchase of PRIDE FC. Upset of St. Pierre. Cover of Sports Illustrated. Breaking of the Ice.
Those are just a few of the UFC headlines courtesy of 2007.
Believe it or not be we are half-way through the year. And the UFC has stuffed just about as much as you can into six months.
NBCSports.com takes a nice spin through all the top stories in the Octagon thus far in the form of photos. It’s definitely worth a look.
Hopefully, the the remainder of 2007 can live up to its beginning. That might be hard, however. The bar is set rather high.

Regardless of the positive and negative that the UFC has gone through MMA continues to grow upward through it.
Shouldn’t be the review of 2007?
UFC73 is the best UFC card to date. Dana White is as big a fight fan as anyone and regardless of his questionable methods, I know he can be counted on to continue to bring us some exciting and solid shows.

Wise guy, heh? Of course it should be. I’m an idiot. Thanks.
I don’t dig Rampage’s sideburns, not one little bit.
Rampage is a mean dude but he is gonna PAY WHEN THE ICEMAN COMES BACK.
i’m surprised half the people are voting for the couture/sylvia fight as the fight of the year so far, thats the worst one out of the four if you ask me…

yeah once we have the year of 2007 to review.

Tha spida is right big tim didnt even fight back they are just picking the fights between the big stars GARCIA vs HUERTA WAS 10
TIMES BETTER THAN SYLVIA VS COUTURE.
I had a heated disscusion with a friend, he was claiming that MMA is still a fad, i was like dude it was a fad when it started but now its a proper sport. I just thought i’d tell yous guys lol.
Anybody who thinks big nog will run through the ufc HW division is delusional AA has a better ground game than minotauro, far better strikes and has won 9 fights in the first round we havent
even seen noguiera in the octagon yet.

Big nog is a beast on the grounds and would submit AA like it was nothing. The only way AA can beat Big nog is if he gets a lucky shot in.
shouldn’t they have included herring vs O’Brien in this?

Minotauro has won 18 fights by submission; Arlovski has won 3.

Dude, was this comment a joke? Big nog for one has taken a kick from CC to the face, and not gotten knocked out. Even a lucky shot from AA wouldnt put him away. There is no way NOG oculd be finished. He is insane. And his submission skills are even better than his chin.
Bottom line, there is NOBODY with a better submission game than BIG NOG.
Wow he took a kick from cro cop, gonzaga took a kick from cro cop then pounded his face in. So what if AA got TKOd by sylvia he can take a shot too, so big deal big nog has good submission skills and can take a punch but he cant strike,is pretty slow and isnt exactly very strong either, he wouldnt be able to take AA down because arlovski has very good takedown defence and is too quick, arlovski would not land one lucky shot here and there he would keep getting shots in until nogueira could take no more.
Bottom line, there is NOBODY with a better submission game than BIG NOG.
Its not submission fighting its mma and it starts on the feet not on the ground, Big Nog Would not be able to take him down and would be eating shots for 15 minutes
heh, have big nog grapple bj then. i would put my life savings on penn
Huerta vs. Garcia was quite sloppy in my opinion and dude couldn’t finish the guy even though he looked like silly putty. How in God’s green Earth is Chuck gonna get Rampage?
ERM WHEN HE RETURNS, CHUCK IS WAY MORE MARKETABLE THAN SHOGUN AND QRJ AND CAN ANYONE SEE TITO GETTING ANOTHER SHOT, CHUCK WILL GET REVENGE BECAUSE AFTER RAMPAGE BEATS HENDO, AND EVANS BEATS ORTIZ THEY WILL MOST PROBERBLY BOOK LIDDELL VS SHOGUN, THERE IS NO WAY CHUCK WILL LOSE HIS FIRST FIGHT BACK.
Big Nog would destroy AA. Oh AA’s takedown defence is good give me a break. When Nog faced “bob Sapp” he weathered storm after storm each time chipping away at the giant. Then finally he submitted him you know what they say “the bigger they are”. I rate AA he is well rounded but a lot of great fighters find the hole in their opponent and exploit it, Big Nog does this against countless fighters, how many greats has AA beaten? (no one even mention Tim Silvia).
way to go Rampage.I’ve been looking at this guys fights for sooooooo many years….I kind of hate to see him have to fight another of my favorite fighters….may the best man win…….p.s. thanks for not banning me u *#$%##%$
just wait till the end of the year and all the crazy shit that will of happened by then HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA he he hic
people who say nog cant strike should watch nog - barnett 2 from 2006 shockwave and stfu.

I dunno, I think PAmpage just has Chucks number. Sometimes in life there is just that one person that you can’t get by. Maybe I am wrong but Rampage has Chuck beat halfway just stepping in the ring, because he has the mental edge of the only 2 times Chuck has been dominated. That is hard to over comee.

I don’t agree. I hope you have at least seen some of Noguiera’s fights in Pride? Some people post things on this board about Pride fighters when they haven’t even seen them fight. AA does have a solid ground game but we haven’t seen it in a while. Quite a while. Noguiera’s ground is top two or three in the world (Fedor, Barnett and maybe Couture).
people who say nog cant strike should watch nog - barnett 2 from 2006 shockwave and stfu.
Noguiera can trade if he has to but he is definitely a ground guy. AA versus Noguiera? I would just wonder how this would go differently than AA-Werdum. AA could keep the fight standing most of the time and he would definitely have the advantage there. It would be another 3-round chorus-of-boo’s victory for Arlovski.

I favored Iceman over Rampage before 71 but now I have to agree that Rampage has his number. And on one hand I really don’t see there being a third fight BUT if the fan interest is there, then it can happen. God help us if Liddell pulls that one off because there would definitely be a fourth fight after that. If Iceman won number four also, then people will say they need the tie-breaker and there might be a fifth. These guys might be in assisted living before their series is over.

AA would stay off the floor just like he did against Werdum. Fans say AA fights are boring but the dude isn’t dumb. Well, okay I don’t know what happened to him in that last fight against Tim Saliva. He got timid.
God fan boys piss me off…
Like talking football with an Eagles fan, all self absorbed non-realist bullshit.
Nog would beat AA. I have yet to see what is so impressive about AA, he beat the chump Sylvia, then lost twice to him. Pedro Rizze knocked him out. Nog would get him down and make him tap. Werdum isn’t in the same class.

QRJ DEFINETLY HAS THE STYLE TO BEAT CHUCK BUT THE ICEMAN WASNT AT HIS BEST GOING INTO THAT FIGHT HE HAD BEEN TAKING SLEEPING PILLS FOR WEEKS LEADING UP TO IT, BUT IM NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM RAMPAGE HE CAPITALISED ON CHUCKS MISTAKE AND I THINK HE MAKES A GOOD CHAMPION, I JUST THINK THAT WHEN CHUCK IS PERFECTLY READY FOR A FIGHT LIKE VS COUTURE 3 AND VS HORN 2 HE WOULD BEAT QRJ.

OK maybe im overreacting because I havnt seen much of big nog and have seen more of AA but I think experience will be the key arlovski has had 13 fights inside the octagon and has won 9 of them, I might change my mind about big nog but first I want to see how he does against herring and experienced ufc heavyweight fighters.
I’d also like to add that thinking Nog would just walk over AA is retarded. AA has better striking, and insane td defense. I’m not saying Nog couldn’t beat him, but he would have his hands full for sure. Then again, Nog wouldn’t sit back trying nothing like Werdum did, and wouldn’t be afraid to just go after him. I think it would be a great fight, either way.

How can you STILL make excuses? Chuck, plain and simple, isn’t the striker he was made out to be. He has just been fighting pure grapplers for the past several years, which are PERFECT for his style. Since getting destroyed by Rampage the first time, the best striker Chuck fought was Randy Couture.
Rampage = much better on the feet, and he always has been. He also has a chin of granite, so the chance of a huge bomb ending it quick is pretty low. Rampage beats Chuck at least 9 times out of 10.

No need to say my comments are a joke maybe the sound wrong to people who watch loads of pride fights but I have been a ufc fan for 3-4 years and didnt see any pride fights til 06, I didnt really mean to say arlovski has a better ground game than big nog i just think that it would be a difficult fight for nogueira and havnt some of the comments about praising big nog have been false he has won 18 fights by submission, jeremy horn has won 49 via submission so at least one person has a better ground game than minotauro, as for me being pulled from posting again I am just commenting on what I have seen I have only seen a few of his fights, so I could be wrong he might dominate everyone he fights but as I said we will see if and when he fights ufc heavyweights like tim sylvia, brandon vera, cheick kongo, gabriel gonzaga and Most of all Randy Couture we will see.

I think you are referring to Randy vs Chuck 1, and I can agree he might have taken that one lightly. However, I don’t think he lacked any focus in the rematch with Rampage. This was THE fight he had wanted for the longest time, and the victory that would be the last loss avenged. I don’t see how he could have taken that lightly, knowing what Rampage did to him the first time they fought.
I honestly don’t think the belt will be around his waste again. Along with Rampage, he also has Silva, Shogun, Henderson, and possibly Little Nog and Arona to worry about. The level of competition in the lhw division really has gone up quite a bit, but it is being overshadowed by all the new heavyweight talent

Icefan, you are looking at the situation as a FAN and not how you should be looking at. Chuck isnt gonna fight Rampage again anytime soon, Chuck NEEDS to get by Wandi or else his career might be falling off the headliners. He also NEEDS to get himself over whatever substance he is/was on and over it emotionaly… like ASAP.

I agree that chuck didnt take rampage lightly, no doubt QRJ deserves to be LHW champion and I have to agree he wanted this fight but I never heard him mention he wanted this fight so soon, I believe that ufc thought it would be a good idea to promote chuck as the lead guy with the pride fighters and right now chuck is the main ufc guy, I just think when he comes back they say he will proberbly fight wandy and ufc 75 and the winner will get QRJ/Hendo I have no doubt that The axe murderer will be chucks biggest test yet but as silvas performences have shown recently he doesnt have a great ground game or great takedown defence either, chuck is comfortable on the ground and has amazing handspeed either guy could take it and it is gonna be a war but I cant see liddell losing twice in a row.
but I dont

The Belfort fight I’ll give you, as Belfort is a good striker. Vernon White, however, is NOT a great striker. He was decent back in the day, but is way past his prime, and nowhere near the top. In the Overeem fight, Chuck was getting absolutely handled on the feet. He then took Overeem down, and kneed the sh** out of him. He wore him down on the ground, THEN finished him on the feet with some bombs. If he wants to get back to the top, that right there is what he needs to work on. Have the ability to take someone down, then they are worried about the takedown, which helps your striking all the more. If he actively takes Wanderlei Silva down, like is is more than capable, I think he would definitely win the fight. I don’t think he will though.
As far as Rampage goes, I think he has a very similar style to Chuck. He is a primarily standup fighter, has a great chin, and has a great wrestling background. The only difference is Rampage is far more willing to take the fight to the ground when needed(He did this vs W Silva). I also think he is a much better striker technically speaking than Chuck. He just doesn’t have as much power in that right hand.

Didnt mean he should get an immediate rematch, that is just my name dont make a big deal out of it, chuck will have one hell of a fight against wandy not saying he is gonna cruise through all of the pride fighters, wandi is one of my favorites but now that he is like 37 he is gonna start fighting like the chuck that KOd babalu in their 1st fight. Chuck’s performance in the Liddell vs Silva match is going to answer every single comment and question in this thread.
By the way Chuck caught Overeem with the best overhand right ever, you could practicly see the bells ringin in his ears and the sparks in his eyes it was lovly.

Chuck took like 15 knees by overeem and a few good shots too overeem tried to submit liddell big mistake chuck wont tap out he pounded him on the ground let him up and gave him a combo of about 3 shots all of which were dead on target. Maybe rampage has heavier hands but the iceman has pin point accuracy in those big nuclear warheads joe rogan quote lol.

When was the last time Chuck was drug tested?
I viewed all the photos and voted.
I must say that the photos were dreadful. I saw all of these events on PPV or TV, have seen multiple photos shots of these fights and these have to be the worst photos for said events.
I don’t understand the voting. How anyone sees the Couture/Sylvia fight as the best fight of the 1/2 year is beyond me…maybe just the Sylvia hatred or Couture love (both well-founded) coming out. Huerta/Garcia was exciting, but one-sided. Either of the TG fights is the clear choice.
P.S. I used to read each post in every thread, but with all the boy band nut huggers I have had to make a mental blacklist … latest entry - IceFan.

I agree on fight of the year. Couture/Sylvia was an amazing fight, and very inspiring, but it wasn’t nearly as exciting as Griffin vs Edgar. Griffin vs Edgar was true mma, and was a back and forth battle both on the feet and on the ground. The only bad thing about it was the ref yelling “fight on” after a clear groin shot. It got my vote, though.
