UFCmania.com has received the fighter payouts for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the event held on June 23 at The Palms Hotel & Casino.
Real-world commitments kept me from passing this information along sooner … apologies.
BJ Penn was the big winner of the night — figuratively and literally — earning $100,000 for his second round stoppage of Jens Pulver in the main event of the evening.
Shockingly, lightweight Leonard Garcia pocketed just $4,000 ($2,000 to show, $2,000 to win) for his submission win over Allen Berube. In contrast, “Monstah Lobstah” — the inexperienced man he beat — took home $8,000.
That seems a little strange.
Roger Huerta, on the other hand, didn’t do too bad.
Nonetheless, the TUF 5 payouts:
BJ Penn — $100,000 ($50,000 to show, $50,000 to win)
Jens Pulver — $30,000
Penn defeated Pulver via submission (rear naked choke) in round two
Nathan Diaz — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Manny Gamburyan — $8,000
Diaz defeated Gamburyan via tapout (injury) in round two
Thales Leites — $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win)
Floyd Sword — $3,000
Leites defeated Sword via submission (arm triangle) in round one
Roger Huerta — $24,000 ($12,000 to show, $12,000 to win)
Doug Evans — $3,000
Huerta defeated Evans via technical knockout (strikes) in round two
Joe Lauzon — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Brandon Melendez — $8,000
Lauzon defeated Melendez via submission (triangle choke) in round two
Cole Miller — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Andy Wang — $8,000
Miller defeated Wang via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Gray Maynard — $8,000
Robert Emerson — $8,000
No contest (Dual knockout/tapout)
Leonard Garcia — $4,000 ($2,000 to show, $2,000 to win)
Allen Berube — $8,000
Garcia defeated Berube via submission (rear naked choke) in round one
Matt Wiman — $16,000 ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win)
Brian Geraghty — $8,000
Wiman defeated Geraghty via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include signing bonuses, sponsorships, pay-per-view percentages and other unofficial bonuses.
Clearly, it appears that all the TUF 5 contestants received the same deals ($8,000 to show, $8,000 to win). Diaz, however, also earned a “six-figure” contract for his win in the finals over Gamburyan.
The total fighter payroll for the TUF 5 Finale was $298,000.

Leonard Garcia — $4,000 ($2,000 to show, $2,000 to win)

yeah its sickening how The Monstah Lobstah gets more than him.
“Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include signing bonuses, sponsorships, pay-per-view percentages and other unofficial bonuses.”
Would love to know what that comes to for the lower level guys. I’m sure Chuck and Randy do well on the sponsorship side and that Shogun got a nice signing bonus but how much is the average UFC fighter earning in extras?
And does anyone know how much $ and many fights the TUF winner’s contract is for?
the lobstah dude, shouldn’t have even been on there. Wtf is that about, him earning double of Garcia.
no wonder these guys need second jobs. Leonard garcia (with travel expenses) may have taken a loss!! They should get 12k/12k at the very least.
I can’t beleive that lobstah made more than the fighter that bested him. And, Garcia will be back. I don’t think that we’ll see Berube in the UFC, unless he’s catering the event.

Crazy part is he would jump at the oppurtunity based on everything ive read about him. He was only on the show to promote his restaraunt.

Right! Did anyone see that fight? I’m curious how well garcia did against that shitty fighter. 4 grand is pathetic. I wanna see BJ Penn vs Andy Wang. I hate Andy.
damn garcia got hosed, whats up with that??? wang, berube, and geraghty had not business even being on the card and they got double what he got, ufc should be ashamed…
That is f-ed up of the UFC to do to Garcia. He might as well been selling hotdogs and drinks.
$4000? They could’ve at least aired on Spike T.V!
That should be illegal only giving the guy 4000, I hope he dosn’t have many more fights on his contract at that rate. I would be asking for a raise.
I cant stand dana white anymore
This is the reason why Tito does what he does. Everytime he acts up before one of his fights he creates hype which gives the ufc more reasons to pay him to show up win or lose. Its a shame because soon we’ll have Edge, Kurt Angle, The Undertaker and the rest of those guys in MMA ready to win an oscar rather than win the fight. But MMA is a business if you don’t have the charisma then you better have a whole lot of skills to make up for it (e.g. Mirko) or you’ll still need to keep that other job.
Dont like it but thats the way it is.
I guess that’s good for the fighters that went through TUF. Maybe it’s a way to slide them for being on the show. Poor Garcia, I would have looked cross eyed at whoever handed me that silly little check. B.J. is underpaid to me but he did want to kick snot out of Jens and didn’t have to work too hard to do it. Maybe he would have done it for free. All in all I can’t see going through all that for those pennies. Dana must really be selling the whole, Legacy of the Fighter routine. Being in history and all is ok I guess, whatever floats your boat.
man that really pisses me off… tons of people tuned in for this and that is all they get payed? thats horrible, they gotta quit makin the UFC look like a second rate sport

That is ridiculous. Wiman got four times Garcia. Monstah lost and still got twice as much, thats retarded!
Thats Bullshit for Garcia. That guy has more talent and heart than 3/4 of those dumbass 155ers on the show. I seriously think he can take out all but Diaz,Manvil,Lauzon,Miller. At that he would give Miller a run
I forgot to add Maynard. That fight would be questionable also
I wouldn’t focus on how screwed Garcia was versus Lobstah. Even Lobstah risked his health for a very little amount of money. The fact that he wasn’t experienced is more reason for him to get more to show. It’s like being jealous of the trailer home that has a deck and curtains. The point is that they are all getting hosed when you consider how much money a high rated 3 hour show brings in on a cable network. Not to mention how many ads played for the next PPV.
Does anyone know what the undercard fighters for the EliteXC/Strikeforce made for the Shamrock/Baroni fight? If it’s the same then it’s just the market price for a fighter and they need a union.

I feel u on this one.
In terms of Garcia getting half as much as berube, i think its very similar to the way the other major sports handle their hispanic and foreign players. In all of the sports it takes alot of times for hispanics to get paid. Especially in baseball. I think it is due to misrepresentation and the language barrier.
The only disgusting part is the Garcia pay.. That guy must be hurting for cash or have no manager at all.
Huerta gets Sports Illustrated cover, bunch of cash, credited as being the next great thing after their war of a fight.
Garcia gets worst pay I’ve ever seen for a second time fighter in the UFC, a competitor like Berube who doesn’t even take MMA seriously, and is put on the undercard. Wake up UFC.
Sending kind of the wrong message.
All the Tuf fighters make 8k to show/win.
Wah wah wah wah.
No wonder they ruled it a no contest, they get to save an extra $8000!

I’m with you Luppers. All the contestants from the show made the same money. It was only Garcia’s second fight, and it was his first win. He’s not exactly a draw, so why would they pay him more?

Why pay him more? How about at least PAY him? $4,000 is a freakin joke. This guy was in the FIGHT of the NIGHT so Dana knows he’s damn exciting to watch…
I for one, was PUMPED to hear he was on the card and then I went to being pissed when I found out it was against that joker and then furious to learn it wasn’t even going to be televised.
That is straight raping someone. I like Dana but man.. Dana always talks about how boxing is going down the toilet because of the promoters and the $$ the fighters make (which is total BS) but Dana is going the absolute opposite route and should be disgusted with himself..
Garcia should have been paid more than that.. Him vs Huerta was an insane fight, he can stand and bang for a good amount of time ;o)

Don’t think you will have to worry about seeing Andy anymore either. He’s 0-2 and never been close to winning.

Yeah his fight against Huerta was outstanding but a loss is still a loss. With this win over lobster man he’d better get paid from here on out. He deserves it!
The bottom line is the UFC is a business and they’ll pay as little money as fighters will accept. As time goes on and there are competing organizations then hopefully salaries will have to rise.
Dana White better start paying better or get used to losing fighters. This is the fastest growing sport and it surpassed boxing this year in pay per view sales. Boxing even pays no name fighters more that what BJ got.
I heard Lobstah almost ended it with strikes , is that true?
I havent’ read a single comment yet, I am about to right now. But what the hell is up with Leonard Garcia? Is the UFC really saying that in their lone UFC showings that Monstah Lobstah showed more skill and heart in his loss to Cole Miller in the first minute of the firt episode of TUF than Leonard Garcia showed in the 3 round fight of the year vs Top 5 talent Roger Huerta. C’mon now….
Garcia’s pay puts the lie to the UFC party line about preferring guys that fight to win and lose (like Garcia) than fight not to lose (like Kos). But this might have been a good move for Garcia actually if his initial UFC contract was for 2 fights at 2/2k each. Wouldn’t he rather earn an easy 4k by rolling over Berube than only 2k losing to someone like Huerta again. Now he’s 1-1 and hopefully will get a better contract next time.
I heard Lobstah almost ended it with strikes , is that true?
According to Garcia’s post fight interview he was VERY close to getting choked out by Lobstah..
And EXCELLENT point TD. “Garcia’s pay puts the lie to the UFC party line about preferring guys that fight to win and lose (like Garcia) than fight not to lose (like Kos).”
Just pathetic. This pay scale is a joke.
greedy penny bastards
People are up in a tizzy about how much money Garcia makes… thats what a LOT of fighters make, 2k to fight / win….
The UFC is in business to make money. Dont think just because a person fights on TV they make good money…
This is why there needs to be another strong MMA organization to make the UFC have to pay good money to have these guys put their health on the line for us.
I am goin to shove a dead rooster on Dana’s Anal damn bro he is so cheap.. he has mostly all the best fighter in the world but he pays them so little….. Come on Dana they put there body on the line to show a good fight, but what do u give them 4 to 8 gran. I can make that at my job for 2 months without getting beat down or injured.
Sincerely yours St. Amour aka DUDU BABY
Booo Hooo Hooo. Everyone is concentrating on this Garcia thing, and how little he got paid, but the sport has come a long way. BJ Penn made 100k! This sport has come a long way over the past few years. Everyone whose pissed at Dana for not paying Garcia enough is pissed at the wrong person. You should be pissed off at Garcia’s sports agent. He negotiated the contract. Obviously Dana and the UFC are going to sign all the fighters for as little $ as possible. They’re running a business and that entails making money. Lets not forget that this wasn’t PPV. No PPV sales to help pad the bottom line. If it were, Garcia might have been paid more.
For right now though I think its more impressive that guys like BJ Penn are making good money, than Leonard Garcia making very little.
”Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include signing bonuses, sponsorships, pay-per-view percentages and other unofficial bonuses.”
Only a couple people get % of pay per views..chuck and randy…
I guess that’s why Kimbo slice fights for 10K in the parking lot. I hope he tries to do a fight event in the parking lot of a UFC main event. That would be sick!
Hahaha - $298,000 for an entire event with 9 fights! Dana is a genius! He pays his fighters peanuts and people still cheer him as the best thing that happened to MMA. And one thirs was the sallary for BJ, so 17 fights split $200,000 for putting their health on the line.
Just a little wake-up call for the UFC nuthuggers here. Lets compare the quite popular EliteXC/Strikeforce event featuring the Shamrock-Baroni fight:
1) 7 fights instead of 9 fights
2) $469,000 instead of $298,000
And I excluded the top sallary of Frank Shamrock, because then it would put things out of proportion. Actually its $469,000 vs. $198,000 if you also substract UFC’s top sallary.
Shamrock got $1,3 million for his fight!
How can people still call themselves fans of certain fighters, yet demand they ALL fight in the UFC, which ultimately gives Dana more leverage when it comes to contracts and sallaries? Without diversification this sport will die a horrible death. Here’s to EliteXC / Strikeforce / K-1 HERO’s / PrideFC / bodogFight. As long as the market is still in flux, fighters have a legitimate chance to earn a living.
I just looked up that the average waste collector salary is ~25,000/year, so with max 4 fights in one year guys like Garcia would earn $9,000 less risking his health than a guy disposing your trash.
Un-fscking-believable.
That is a shame even the BJ Penn making 100K for the win. Boxers make a hell of a lot more. If the UFC wants to get the best fighters from around the world they are going to need to pay more. How can you expect someone to train to take their game to the next level when they are living on water and crackers. No telling how much Spike and the UFC made on this one event.
Garcia should of got sub of the night bonus but bet they gave it to Leites, those bonuses are worth $15000 now i think
Dang are the people who get paid so low fodder?
yall wana help leonard get paid, heres what u do… U e-mail ufc and press the huerta garcia fight for fight of the year. vote/ make some noise about it and big len and roger split 100k. but i know him and the kid just loves to fight. no bullshit from fightn in west texas shoot fights n shit to a weekend at the palms, w/ a lobster dinner to boot shit old boy still smilen. hed bang with anybody any time just for fun trust me he aint upset about it. Dana beter pay his ass though 2g’s does make the sport look broke-ass
Garcia should be pissed even that pussy matt wiman got more garcia is better than all the TUF 5 guys except nate
Lobstah Monstah got twice what garcia got even though he lost, whats up with that.
Casey I am just curious to know how you know Leonard. I have just been trying to get ahold of him or his brothers, we lost touch when I left to the Marine Corps 11 yrs ago. Until then you couldn’t find one of us without the other. I have been meaning to roll by his mom’s house, but I have been in Iraq for the past 10 months. ekc2c@yahoo.com
u gents r simply off the mark. yes boxing is an exception at the highest level. even boxing falls into line below the super stars boxing pays pretty low. small shows run around $100 per round. some other examples of individual sports beginning w/ the highest winnings:
Nascar #1 winner made 7 mill for 40 events with the highest competitive cost including cars and a crew of 15.
golf #1 winner 7 mill for 20 events with cat getting 10% salary.
mens tennis #1 9 mill for 25 events while footing travel bill across world for self adn coach.
it drops significantly after that.
now these guys make plenty of money as a moving bill board and that is where the fighters will make thiers IF the sport atracts the public long term in mass.
I wouldnt complain
jens got ripped. the man is a warrior and shoulda made much more than that. fucking insult.
what? just recently dana white handed $5,000 each to dan barrera and ben saunders of tuf 6. he gave jens “lil evil” pulver $10,000 for winning a ping pong game in tuf 5 (much congrats of course jens). the pay scale is all messed up and lopsided. no wonder randy couture said the hell with the organization.
pulver should have got paid more
