Royce Gracie, known to many as the godfather of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, tested positive for Nandrolone, according to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) as reported on Sherdog.com.
Gracie had recently competed against longtime foe and PRIDE FC fixture Kazushi Sakuraba at the much ballyhooed but ultimately disappointing K-1 Heroes Dynamite on June 2.
Gracie is suspended until May 30 of 2008 and has been fined $2,500 by the CSAC.
That price seems paltry compared to the cost of tarnishing both his legacy and his lineage.

Wow! this is truly dissapointing. I see this as acry for help in wanting to stay involved in the sport. he should of taken his place as a legend and let it all be. The legacy will now be tarnished. This sucks! MMA fans. I still thought he had one more really marketbale fight. An open weight old school battle between him and Ken Shamrock. Maybe a co-main event. Thats garbage now
Ah sad indeed but sometimes I wonder if its because the machinery doesn’t work the same anymore and athletes need that extra pump to fight at the level they are used to.
Not a smart move, but Royce is still a great fighter.
this will be used as firepower for all of those boxing guys who denounce mma. “your best star tested positive for steroids what does that say…”
can’t effing wait.
Well, people who’ve been watching MMA and especially Pride for years know how much the Gracies have been put to shame by Sakuraba.
He defeated Royler (submitted by Kimura), Royce (corner stoppage), Renzo (submitted by Kimura) and Ryan Gracie (decision). When Royce finally got the chance to redeem his family with one last fight against the so called “Gracie Hunter”, he probably wanted to make sure he wins the last fight Gracie-vs-Sakuraba.
Well, he did, but not in a dominant fashion and many people called for a draw as a decision. In retrospective, considering Royce used steroids: Sakuraba did a good job neutralizing Royce on roids and obviously with a DQ/NC he will be declared a winner now. So that makes it 5-0 for Sakuraba vs. Gracies and I could not be happier for him.
Remember, Royce took roids to prepare for the fight, the legendary Gracie Hunter did this to himself, to prepare for the fight:
http://www.cdn.sherdog.com/_images/pictures/45/44708.jpg
What a legend.
I have never like Royce, and some may give me shit, but I feel like every time Royce was in a fight that they had special rules (recent fights). I like the other gracies, and honestly this does nothing to sway me, I already disliked Royce.

Steroids? Really? The guy STILL looked like the emaciated suicidal maniac on the Sixth Sense. I’m glad his ol’ash was caught. Make that Five and OOOH for the Gracie Hunter. That said, its definitely a glaring heads up for MMA in general….Things like this only signify kindling for those Boxing idiots to open their mouths.
Seriously, does anyone think that the roids Royce was using worked?
Like neospyro wrote, he does look like an emaciated suicidal maniac.
I think someone tainted the sample.
Compare, Royce against Hughes:
http://www.cdn.sherdog.com/_images/pictures/30/30171.jpg
Royce before Sakuraba:
http://www.sherdog.com/_images/pictures/43/43326.jpg
He looked alot leaner and stronger during the fight too. Not enough to cause any suspicion back then, but with a failed test it definetly is very well possible.
OMG !
Will the fight’s result be changed ( NC )??
It must be extremely difficult for aging athletes… They go from being young and at the top of the food chain, to “over the hill”, trying to cling on to their careers. Royce has become somewhat of a “novelty” fighter these days, thats why he fights under special conditions.
Fuel for the boxing idiots! I dunno about that. Think how many times boxing has been dragged through the mudd. Hell Hector CAmacho just got arrested for Burglary or something like that. Mike Tyson Possibly the biggest name in Boxing history, is nothing but a common street thug. Buckwheat with money, Don King, maybe the dirtiest man alive, besides his criminal past. The be all end all saving grace Boxing match )De LA Hoya vs. MAyweather) was little than a school yard game of tag. That is just a quick synopsis with out getting into great detail. I am sure there have been many a fighter to lose face. My cousin was married to Lou Duvas Daughter for 5 or 6 years and he says boxing is not the shinning star everyone is making it out to be. It is not a pretty game, it is far from pure. Hell boxing’s history in general is one giant tarnish. So the Godfather of MMA tried to compete in one last match at his tops. How many other fights has he given the MMA world without a positive? The good thing about MMA is it is still relatively pure. al1though some of the introductions for main fights are getting a little showy. Still none the less it is still about 2 fighters and the cage/ring. 2 walking warriors. 1 steps out victorious. That is all…Look deep into the history of boxing there is plenty of tarnish. J
Does he still keep the money he made?
I can’t believe they only fined him $2,500. And he made like $300,000?
lol.
Man thats shit, but i dont think it will do much to his image. Their will be someone somewhere that will take this out of proportion. I’m totally against steriods and maybe Royce was recovering from a injury.

Have you guys seen UFC 5 lately? It was a lay and pray fight then, just plain boring. How n the world could it be any better now?
WHAT!??!?!
I HATE THIS!
So I’m a young guy watching UFC 1-4, I worshipped Gracie, I wrestled in High School, I take BJJ now, all because I wanted to fight like that guy. He’s such a fucking fraud, Go do pro-wrestling.
K-1 Hero’s, Should be K, Coke, Meth and Roids Heroes.
I will wait to see what Royce says. It is possible to test positive and not be taking the stuff. Nandrolone does occur naturally in the body. I hope it is not true, but I would like to see more details, as Royce hardly looks like a doper.
Wikipedia Nandrolone Entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nandrolone
The fight will not be overturned, but Cali is working to change those laws right now. The fine was mandated by Cali law also, and that too they are working on changing. But even more interesting, when Royce fought Hughes, it was in Cali also, and the CSAC didnt test for steriods then…
I don’t believe they are going to overturn the decision though.

Yup… bottom line, he isnt athletic enough to compete at a high level in today’s MMA. Strength and conditioning >>> Armbars and triangles.
I think this is Fing HorseShat…. $2,500? He MADE 300k on the fight. Nate Diaz lost more money for Weed, Guillard lost almost as much and made 5% of what Royce did. Stephen Bonnar lost what? 5k? NSGC really needs to lay down some solid rules on suspensions, drugs, and fining. I dont care if Royce is a legend, he cheated just like all the others did… and should be handled accordingly.
Stupid is as stupid does. Getting a little older, needs to try to find a little more of an edge. Maybe the first and only time that he’s ever used, but he got caught.
Just wait, team Gracie is gonna say that because of a high protein diet and Royce’s legendary workouts that the Nandralone that he tested positive for were the result of natural body chemistry. Just wait…
I hate to tell you Mike, but Royce Gracie hasn’t been MMA’s best star in a long, LONG time. Honestly, you can’t call ANY fighter in Pride MMA’s best star. The skill level of Pride is so much lower than that of the UFC. While there are a few guys that can compete in the UFC, most of them don’t have a chance. Not to mention that you see a bunch of fighters in Pride that the UFC dropped because they couldn’t compete anymore. Pride is huge in Japan but that is because it has a bunch of Japanese fighters and most of them aren’t very good.
I respect Royce as a fighter and it is sad to see him go to these lengths to win now that he doesn’t have the skill of old. Retirement would have been a better option.
Like someone else said, he was probably so intent on winning this fight to give some juice back to the Gracie name so he decided to use steroids. I doubt he used them before because he probably would have been caught by now.
Honestly, you can’t call ANY fighter in Pride MMA’s best star. The skill level of Pride is so much lower than that of the UFC.
First, you must be talking about in the US, but unfortunatley, there are 186 other countries at last count. I’ll put, say, Denis Kang’s Asian popularity up against anyone in this country except Chuck Liddell, and I doubt you’ve ever seen the guy fight.
Second, and I’ll say it again, when UFC fighters were fighting in barn’s, Pride was selling out the Tokyo Dome. All the best UFC fighters left for Pride. That flow is changing obviously, but to say the skill level is so much lower is a joke.
HW - can any UFC HW compete over a long term with Fedor, CC, Barnett, or Nog?
LHW - Liddell vs Rua, Page, Wandy, Arona, Lil Nog, and Soko.
MW - Rich Franklin v ASilva ( still Pride to me ), Kang, and Hendo
WW - You can have this one, Pride never really had a WW class
LW - forget it, take anyone you want and face them off against Gomi, Mach, or Melendez.
Any thoughts? Lemme guess, Michael Bisping is a top ten LHW to you because he won TUF, right?
what are you kiding me almost all pride fighter have goten smashed by ufc guy what about the great cro crop its cause thay cant hang in the cage showgun real helps you out, first tuf winner chokes him out ya right pride should of been called bum fights over sea’s every one that could not make it in the ufc went to fight for pride ufc is # 1 hands down
I am actually not surprised by this at all. I was on wikipedia looking up some shit the other day and saw that Royce beat Sakuraba and thought to myself “how the fuck did that happen?”.
I’m sure it’s a true positive, and that he did it because of a lack of self esteem after getting beat down so much recently. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Unfortunately for him, he could have retired, and would be $2500 richer and still be the Gracie that everyone knows as the original UFC BJJ god.

That gets an ‘OH SNAP!’
I think Sherk, Franca, and Lauzon would put up a good fight against most any Pride LWs. Add the now journeyman Diaz to the list..
He should have hung em up a while ago. He’s still better than alot of MMA fighters, but if he needs the juice, he’s a shadow of his former self.
He’s still better than alot of MMA fighters…
Sorry, I dont agree with that. I dont care if he walked in the Octagon last summer against Burkman, Karo, Fitch, GSP, Diego, Kos… that fight would have ended like it did. MMA fighters now are ATHLETES. These guys are extremely well rounded and much STRONGER then Royce’s non-muscular ass. If Royce had kept up on the physicality of it (dont kill me for saying this, but much like the Shamrock’s did for 10 years) he could still fight at a high level.
Id say that the ‘Brazilian’ Jujitsu arrogance is what held Royce back from taking steps to improve his overall game… Until after the mauling from Hughes. Too bad he didnt work hard and took the easy route.
Ah sad indeed but sometimes I wonder if its because the machinery doesn’t work the same anymore and athletes need that extra pump to fight at the level they are used to.
Yeah this sounds like the Lyle Alzedo(sp?) story (Oakland Raiders 1980’s)- washed up old guy juices to make a comeback.
(Alzedo eventually died of a brain tumor they attributed to the steroid abuse).
He shouldn’t be on anything except Viagra.

I don’t know much about performance enhancing drugs but not all of them cause you to bulk up. Look at Lance Armstrong. He is as massive as Sheryl Crow but his endurance is off the charts. So maybe Royce was on something like that.
To me Sherk still has to prove himself. Walking around, calling himself a champ, but never defending the title is just bollocks. People may jump on a comparison with Fedor, who did not defended his title now for a while, but matter of fact he defended it 12 times by now, thats 3 title defenses per year.
I don’t care if you are injured or not - if you can’t defend the title - within, lets say 6-9 months - then the title needs to be vacant and free for grabs.
Franca will prove what he’s made of very soon against Sherk and Lauzon kinda showed against Manny, that he is not yet ready to adapt his game to any kind of fighter. Not saying he is not championship material, but it will take 1-2 more years for him to be even close to Gomi or Mach.
Not all anabolic steroids are used to pack on tons of muscle. Some of them are designed to help your body recover faster after intense workouts so you can train harder for longer periods of time. Look at all the relief pitchers in baseball who get nailed. Their busts don’t get as much attention as Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire, but they use steroids for recovery so they can pitch every day. My guess is Royce was using one of these so he would be able to train hard enough to compete at the level he wanted to. It doesn’t make it right, but he was just trying to delay the inevitable slowing process that we all deal with as we get older.

That was funny. I haven’t seen that pic..
On behalf of Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, the various organizations should seize all footage of their recent fights and lock it away. These guys were great fighters 15 years ago but they’ve just embarassed themselves since.

I know this is UFCMANIA so it’s supposed to be a UFC-centric fan board but- UFC is not the end all. Overall I would say Pride (before they gutted it) is equal. Some weight classes are better and some probably aren’t. Specifically at HWT Pride is better. All the UFC bigots start yelling “Crocop”. That was one fight. GSP and Chuck Liddell got knocked out too. And yeah, Heath Herring has been a bust. You haven’t seen Nog, Emelianenko or even Josh Barnett (a personal fav- who beat RC in the old UFC).
I agree, Sherk would get killed by Gomi, the guy beats florian and is given the belt, florian in my IMO is good but not ranked top 10, thats for sure.
I hope Franka knocks him right the F*@K out!
Even most rankings have sherk ranked tenth, just because he has gold around his waist, champs should be proven, sherk is not.
Royce…you made a liar out of me, you’ve shat on your name and the sport that made you. You are an unprofessional sorry excuse for a fighter and anybody that puts you on a card is an idiot and not getting a damn cent from me.
Royce RIP cause your dead to me
it a shame that Royce did this, its not like he even needed to fighting the shell of Saku…But for people saying this gives boxing people fuel, this is an old man, who doesnt even fight in the UFC..not to mention, James Toney just got suspended for roids as well, so its not a very good argument
and mtu, i wouldnt really say that Ufcs best went over to Pride, most of them went over to get another chance in a new environment.. Wandy, Randleman, Coleman, Baroni…i dont get the hw long term talk..CC close to retiremnt, Fedor doesnt even know where or wehn he will fight next, i hate to say it but the way Nog fights, he may end up like Saku before he’s 35, so i think i would take guys like AA, Gonz, and Vera for the long run..not to mention when any new up and comers fight they will most likely be ufc, since Pride seem nonexistant now..LW divison in Pride was definately more stacked, but thats not saying that the ufc guys cant pull off Goz like upsets on any day(im not talking Liddell/tito, they can, im talking about the TUF guys)..also A silva in only 2 fights with the ufc, is half ways to how many fights he had in Pride, and he went elsewhere after he left Pride..UFC definately has WW, Mach probably cant even make 155, but I would give UFC 155 the advantage to be honest
You know that drug isn’t even that potent and if you read the wiki on it they say this
“Urine analysis as a method of detecting nandrolone abuse has recently become somewhat controversial, following studies by the University of Aberdeen showing that the metabolite product can also show up in urine in quantities above the upper limit from a combination of high-protein diets utilising the legal nutritional supplement creatine and hard cardiovascular exercise.”
I don’t know about you but that sounds like damn near every guy at my gym.
Lol, I added the “Still Pride to me” cause I knew YOU would bring that up! And I said long term because I didnt wanna hear about CC getting KOed. If I did, the rant woulda been legendary.
I still and always will love the old Pride, and really today could care less as long as the fighters are taken care of, but to hear TUF newbies even try to discuss Pride just gets me.
With all the new research being done on steroids and how it can be used effectively in treating ailments and whatnot, I think that Congress needs to find a way to make steroids a legally prescribed medication and set harsh punishments for steroid abuse and not steroid use.
I’m sure Gracie was by no means using roids to gain an unfair advantage over the competition and was simply using it medical purposes. I think a lot of other pro athletes use roids for this purpose as well.
All in all, I think ppl. should take the medical aspect of steriod use into account before making any rash judgments about steroid usage in the context of gaining an unfair advantage.
The rules changed so UFC would be sanctioned. So there are probably a lot techniques Gracie was caught off from. Although that is no excuse for steroid use. The great thing about MMA is how all these jokers just train in the basics so they never learn the movements that are the subtle moves of a master. I watched a UFC Event where two people supposedly trained in Thai kick boxing squared off. Very few kicks. It sucked.
-
Anybody that wants to see Royce Gracie fight Ken Shamrock, had better give Shamrock steroids, he’s been getting his @ss handed to him on a plate lately.
i cant fucken believe it..
i would’ve rather he lost then to find this shit out..

This is just sad. Even though he is way past his prime this is a sad thing for a MMA legend. Quit now Royce and try to salvage some of the respect you once had.
Same thing happaned to Stephan so why use a drug that’s gonna stay in your system for a long time? Even Thiago alves, who just used a diuretic. Why sacrifice so much though..

And MW, im not sure about Sivla being a Pride fighter, he didnt have many fights there, he already almost that many fights in UFC. Hendo is a UFC guy. Lets see him take the belt. Then you can call it 3 to 2 as far as divisions go. UFC has lightweight and WW. Pride has/had HW and LHW. Score is 2 to 2, game point.
Pride has MW. That’s It,and AS,Franklyn, and Okami would give them all a run for thier money. So would Tanner. As far as light heavywieght goes Chuck, Rampage, Tito, and Babalu. That says It all right there. Tito whooped Wanderlei, Chuck destroyed Overeem, Rampage KOed Arona, and Babalu made Shogun tap. Yeah I know Shogun and Wandy both beat the shit out of Rampage but that’s as far as It goes. If Wandy beats Chuck, and Shogun or Hendo take the Title then I’ll give LHW to Pride. But untill then UfC is up a few notches. Oh and Pride had the best HW’s or just more of them, but the UFC taken almost all of them except the Emelianko brothers.
Royce Gracie sucks. Such a boring fighter anyway.
What’s so bad about Royce being on roids, f*#k everyone that fights lately has been popped for being on something or another. What’s to say they haven’t all been doing them & they’re just now getting around to testing all these guys. I don’t think they should be on anything either BUT who’s to say who & for how long its been going on. My bet is FOR A LONG F*%#ing TIME. Yes Royce is over the hill, we should all be in that good of shape at his age. This does not change all the great fights I’ve had the pleasure of watching over the years, any more than it changes the way I feel about Sanchez, Diaz, Guillard, or anyother of the guys that have been popped lately. Just clean it up boys & go on!
Whats a little Deca for an old man? He will still have to use Viagra.
They should just let them use roids if they want to. It would set some bad ethical examples but maybe Gracie would just load up and buld up to get his ass kicked by Liddel?
Mr Thau please, create in CGI a negative steroids test for Royce Gracie. Mr Thau try to do it please
I guess he knew he had to work on his strength after Hughes made him his bitch.
does this testing positive mean anything to what ROYCE did for mma. ROYCE is responsible for bringing the art of jiu jitsu to mma in 1993 against Art Jimmerson. From 1993 til today hes fought and tested clean. So someone smart not just any idiot please tell me why in the hell is he legacy “tainted”
Royce tested positive for a substance that occurs naturally in high testosterone people. How many MMA and Brazilian jiu-jitsu fights has Royce had? I would think that the human body would produce produce more of this substance every time he fought and got the adrenalin pumping. Matt Hughes pounded Royce but Hughes is a wrestler that being said he has sucked weight his whole life he can probably have a 25 lb swing in the 36 hours between weigh in and fight Royce was 176 the tale of the tape said Hughes was 170 he always looks 190 to me every time in the octagon. These guys train for this because its their job Matt Hughes man handles everyone because he has the size advantage. If you weighed him today he would be minimum 185 thats another weight class. Royce made this sport in America hes the only one Tipper couldn’t attack!
Just for people who think that Royce Gracie naturally produced those anabolic steroids (Nandrolone).
Why do you think he accepted the judgment of being fined and suspended? He obviously knows he took steroids, and knows that he has been found out. If he did not take steroids and was tested positive, he would’ve fought back and argued against the judgment. But he didn’t. He was tested, the test was positive, and Royce accepted his punishment.
Royce was 40 years old when tested positive for steroids. So no his “natural” occuring testosterone wan’t high. Also if it was high how come he didn’t test positive in the past? so no…. Also nandralone isn’t prduced in the body only andro is.
p.s that is why it is an illegal substance. But Royce was a good Martial artist and grappler i don’t know if he was a good fighter since i only saw him throw like 1 punch in his whole “career.” ANd by the way it is cheating if it is against the rules in the sport.
It is said that legends get to the top naturally but as they grow old they rely on steroids to compete with the younger generation.
You guys all rag on Royce and some of you applaud Frank Shamrock. The truth about Frank is that he has snorted so much coke that he should be part owner of Columbia….but thats OK right. Gracie was just trying to stave off the effects of aging but hes the bad guy…yeah right.
