I would just like to add that everyone speaks of Hughes struggles with guys that GSP beats when camparing to GSP. First off, Hughes has never struggled in a fight that was clean, except for maybe the BJ fight, and EVERYONE will struggle to beat BJ. Hughes fight with Sherk was no struggle, just similar styles, that make for a slow fight. Trigg, come on, how can anyone say he struggled against Trigg. Obviously he took a shot in the jewels, and was not given the time to recover. Lastly, GSP! Try getting kicked in the nuts twice (intentional or not) and see how it takes the fight out of you. I am not saying GSP sucks, but NOBODY gives Hughes the credit he deserves.

GSP has no heart. I bet he pulls out of the Kos fight with a sprained toe.
Playin' the GSP manlovers again. He definitely has some hardcore fans. You guys defend him like you know him or something. His record is not so stellar. Twinkle Toes. Beats Sherk at 70. Split decision over Penn? Caught Matt Hughes with a HLK. He is an athlete, no doubt, but he's no fighter.
You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Ditto on that, the guy is a tard.

Yes. Just messing with you. But be real -
54: Trigg was exposed by Hillbilly Hughes twice before GSP faced.
56: Sherk was at the wrong weight. He has the arm length of a T-Rex.
58: GSP survived the Penn fight and stole a controversial split-decision over Penn with takedowns but no punishment...weak.
65: GSP comes into his own with a HK to Hillbilly Hughes...like I said, he is an athlete, unlike Matt the country bumpkin.
69: KOd...it happens, he got caught.
St. Pierre won 4 in a row, 6 of 8 in the UFC...won the title and successfully defended it 0 times...
Tim Sylvia won 5 in row, 8 of 11 in the UFC...won the title twice and successfully defended it twice.
I don't like Sylvia either, but GSP just doesn't deserve the homage you give him...maybe it's just because you think he has a better body than Tim?
Well I just disagree with your method of catagorizing a "fighter". The fact that Trigg lost to Hughes twice dosnt degrade the win GSP got with him in my mind. Trigg put up awsome battles with Hughes both times. Trigg just has the worst sub defense for a guy of his caliber.
Sherk ok, but still, Hughes couldnt finish, GSP could. Also, GSP handled Karo pretty nicely, with the GnP. Gsp also has heart as he showed against Penn, although I too think Penn is a better fighter, the best at 55 and 70.
The fact is these guys are a lot better in there division than the guys Sylvia had to face in his, save AA. GSP has had many more tests. I think he is looked upon a little to highly, but I think you look at him far to, uh, lowly.

Here is what was posted on www.Sportsnet.ca

CP) -- Georges St. Pierre's shocking loss to Matt Serra is continuing to cause waves for the former UFC welterweight champion.

The 170-pound mixed martial arts fighter from Montreal has been forced to leave his jiu-jitsu mentor, has switched kickboxing coaches and finds himself embroiled in a debate over whether he has the mental game to go with his undeniable physical assets.

Adding to the mix, St. Pierre's manager Stephane Patry agrees with UFC president Dana White that the Canadian lost to Serra because of cracks in his mental game. But Patry (who also runs the TKO MMA circuit in Montreal) says the Serra setback was a one-off.

"Dana is one thousand per cent right on the fact that he lost that fight mentally," Patry told The Canadian Press in an interview from Montreal. "But saying that Georges is not good mentally is wrong. To beat Matt Hughes the way he beat him. To beat Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, the way he beat those guys, you need to be mentally strong, especially when you're 23 years old doing so."

Serra, a 10-1 underdog, upset St. Pierre in the Canadian's first title defence at UFC 69 in April in Houston. St. Pierre was humble after the fight, saying Serra deserved the win. But he angered Serra in a subsequent interview when he blamed the loss on the fact that a knee injury restricted his training to just two weeks.

St. Pierre, 26, also told The Fan 590 in Toronto he would never have taken the fight if his opponent had been former champion Matt Hughes.

"But I told myself it's Matt Serra, I can beat this guy easily, he said. "I took it, I made a mistake, I learned a big life lesson from it."

Serra was not impressed. "How do I not get insulted by that," he told MMA Radio.

"Drink your red wine, go to your hockey game and shut up," added Serra, referring to St. Pierre as Frenchy.

As a consequence, Serra told New York-based jiu-jitsu mentor Renzo Gracie he would leave if St. Pierre continue to train there. Serra has been a student of Gracie longer than St. Pierre, so the Canadian became the odd man out.

St. Pierre, who opted not to train at Gracie's academy in the buildup to the Serra fight, is now working on his jiu-jitsu in Montreal with Bruno Fernandez and Fabio Holanda.

He has also switched kickboxing coaches, leaving Victor Vargotsky to work with Phil Nurse in New York. Hopefully that split was amicable. Vargotsky is a former kickboxing champion from Ukraine and an ex-Soviet Union special forces sniper who served in Afghanistan,

Patry believes lack of training was not his fighter's problem,

"I don't think he lost that fight because (of) how long his training was, I think he lost that fight mentally," he said in an interview.

But the two are connected, according to Patry. "The whole mental thing happened because of the three weeks of training."

The knee injury -- which forced the UFC to postpone the bout from Feb. 3 to April 7 -- cut into training, as did a bout of flu, according to Patry.

"I think Georges is such a gifted athlete that he could get away with a four-week or three-week training camp, in my opinion. But if a three- or four-week training camp affects his mental (game), then we can't do that," said Patry. .

In a conference call before UFC 71, White questioned St. Pierre's mental toughness, saying he fell victim to nerves against Serra.

"This kid was so nervous to fight Matt Serra, it was blowing my mind," said White, who saw St. Pierre in his dressing room before the fight.

"I think that Georges St. Pierre needs to work on his mental game, because his physical game is second to none. ... The only thing I've seen, any kink in his armour, is his head."

Unlike White, Patry says St. Pierre was fine in the dressing room. But he didn't like what he saw when his fighter walked out to the cage.

"While we were in the dressing room, just before we walked out to go to the Octagon, I was sure he was going to run through Matt Serra. And no disrespect to Matt. I really like Matt. But I thought Georges had the skills and the physical preparation to beat him.

"When he walked to the Octagon, he started doubting himself. He started saying to myself, `Oh, I only trained three weeks. What if he trained more than me? What if he is more prepared than me? I usually train seven weeks. Is it going to show in the fight? Blah blah blah, blah blah blah."'

Those questions ruined his mental preparation, Patry suggested.

Noting his fighter had a nine-inch reach advantage over Serra, Patry added: "If Georges is there mentally and he's concentrated, there's no way Matt Serra should even touch his gloves let alone behind his head."

St. Pierre himself admitted he was so psyched out the first time he fought Hughes at UFC 50 in 2004 that he couldn't even bring himself to look at Hughes during the pre-fight instructions in the ring. But he came into the rematch a different man, staring defiantly at the champion before taking away his championship belt.

Patry notes St. Pierre was just 21 when he fought Hughes the first time.

"He had every right to be nervous," he said.

"Even with a sports psychologist or all the help in the world, there's no way a kid like that can't be nervous fighting his idol. He showed his true colours in the second fight.

"I think the thing where Georges is weak right now is for him to be comfortable mentally, everything has to go his way. He has to learn that sometimes things happen and you can't let these things affect your mental (game). And that's what we're working on."

St. Pierre is expected to fight Josh Koscheck in August while Serra faces off against Hughes in the finale of the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Serra and Hughes are rival coaches on the reality TV show.

"He'll come back stronger than ever, he's very talented and he's going to learn from that," Patry said of St. Pierre.

The manager has no beef with Serra.

"Georges was nervous and that's not Serra's fault. ... Matt Serra played the perfect game, he put pressure on Georges and that's what you have to do on those young guys."

"It's the fight game," he said of the controversy between Serra and St. Pierre. "It's going to sell tickets to the rematch."

“I think that Georges St. Pierre needs to work on his mental game, because his physical game is second to none. … The only thing I’ve seen, any kink in his armour, is his head.”

Unlike White, Patry says St. Pierre was fine in the dressing room. But he didn’t like what he saw when his fighter walked out to the cage.

“While we were in the dressing room, just before we walked out to go to the Octagon, I was sure he was going to run through Matt Serra. And no disrespect to Matt. I really like Matt. But I thought Georges had the skills and the physical preparation to beat him.

“When he walked to the Octagon, he started doubting himself. He started saying to myself, `Oh, I only trained three weeks. What if he trained more than me? What if he is more prepared than me? I usually train seven weeks. Is it going to show in the fight? Blah blah blah, blah blah blah.”‘

Those questions ruined his mental preparation, Patry suggested.

Noting his fighter had a nine-inch reach advantage over Serra, Patry added: “If Georges is there mentally and he’s concentrated, there’s no way Matt Serra should even touch his gloves let alone behind his head.”

St. Pierre himself admitted he was so psyched out the first time he fought Hughes at UFC 50 in 2004 that he couldn’t even bring himself to look at Hughes during the pre-fight instructions in the ring. But he came into the rematch a different man, staring defiantly at the champion before taking away his championship belt.

Patry notes St. Pierre was just 21 when he fought Hughes the first time.

“He had every right to be nervous,” he said.

“Even with a sports psychologist or all the help in the world, there’s no way a kid like that can’t be nervous fighting his idol. He showed his true colours in the second fight.

“I think the thing where Georges is weak right now is for him to be comfortable mentally, everything has to go his way. He has to learn that sometimes things happen and you can’t let these things affect your mental (game). And that’s what we’re working on.”

St. Pierre is expected to fight Josh Koscheck in August while Serra faces off against Hughes in the finale of the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Serra and Hughes are rival coaches on the reality TV show.

“He’ll come back stronger than ever, he’s very talented and he’s going to learn from that,” Patry said of St. Pierre.

The manager has no beef with Serra.

“Georges was nervous and that’s not Serra’s fault. … Matt Serra played the perfect game, he put pressure on Georges and that’s what you have to do on those young guys.”

“It’s the fight game,” he said of the controversy between Serra and St. Pierre. “It’s going to sell tickets to the rematch.”
