“It seems the only people who think UFC 71 was a failure are the sort of mainstream national sports media columnists who never want to take a moment to learn something out of their wheelhouse, and wish mixed martial arts would simply go away.”
– One of the first journalists from a major news organization — Dave Doyle of FOXSports.com — to cover mixed martial arts comments on the recent not so “fair and balanced” mainstream press coverage of UFC 71 this past weekend. For more on this issue check out Luke Thomas over at BloodyElbow.com — he hands Associated Press sports writer Tim Dahlberg his ass in a recent response to such an article.

The Bloody Elbow article is a must read for all of us. Man Crush on Luke.
Did he send KY with that response? If he didn’t then dumb ass will still be limping a week from now.
UFC 71 was crazy..I didn’t care what say or know..it doesn’t matter..
its just an old generation putting down mma.stuburon if u will. soon they will be gone and everyone will growing up wit mma and there will be no more problems like this.
ESPN and those other folks who are on TV or in a paper talk like they have clue on what MMA is..and they don’t. Do yourself a favor hire a MMA expect to do the commentating/writing/ point-of-viewing to Mainstream America.
They shoud hire Phil Baroni.
yep read the bloody elbow one….for evry MMA fan, new and old…….
Now lets not make it seem like all true MMA fans are standing on a roof looking down at all the people who know nothing about the true art of MMA. If these people dont get MMA or what the UFC is about, thenthey never will.
Noone has seemed to mention (except MMA fans) that the last greatest boxing match was a bust. Would you want to see 2 guys with heavily padded gloves, neither of which is strong enough to knock each other out, tap each other for 12 rounds? I think people who have a prob. with MMA should definantly have a prob. with boxing. I can honestly say that boxing match convinced me to never watch boxing again.
I hear people saying that boxing is a “skilled sport”. I do like the accumulative aspect of all fighting styles. If you know it and understand watching Karo Parisyan fight for example. Him waiting to set up that big throw. That was all skill. You could see him setting it up, then he transitioned to some boxing and some wrestling.
Bloody elbow article is quality! Personally I have nothing against boxing, and I don’t think MMA has anyting against boxing. It doesn’t do MMA any god to bash boxing, and really the only thing wrong with boxing is that they don’t have a Dana White. I can see why there is some anger from the boxing guys though…MMA is taking away fans and their is less money to go around.
What an ignorant fool this Tim Dahlberg is! In his column he goes on to mention how many rich and famous people were at the De la hoya fight. What does rich and famous have to do with anything? UFC attracts rich and famous people too, but unlike boxing the UFC has more things to hang there hat on than how many famous people were in attendance! He also goes onto say the people in the UFC crowd “not-so-rich-and-famous” SERIOUSLY what does that have to do with anything? He goes on to say “There are rules in UFC (no eye gouging or groin punching among them) but hitting a man when he’s down isn’t one of them. So Jackson jumped on Liddell and started punching him until the referee jumped in and stopped the bout less than two minutes after it began……If this had been boxing, there would have been cries of a fix. If this had been boxing, the referee would have been crucified for stopping it too soon.” Sorry Jim unlike boxing we dont want are fighters dying!!!
Kudos to Mad Squabbles for the excellent article, it nice to see a well written article with valid points that defends the sport we love!

Or the fact the noone can knock each other out. But to each his own i guess.

hate to say this, but rogan and trigg are some of the best. prolly the most likely candidates for espn

im taking this comment back. its gonna be randy
Have to agree on Rogan and Trigg. Bas Rutten also does a good job on the IFL fights. Hell, anyone who understands MMA at all is better than the pseudo-journalists on ESPN trying to condense everything down to the next pithy SportsCenter catchphrase.

He is probably the most eloquent speaker to ever walk the Earth.
Anyway, ESPN will eventually come all the way around. Simple economics demands that they do so.
Also, all of this hating on MMA is awesome for the sport. Everyone loves contraversy and young people love doing what they are told not to. On top of that, the dude said how it wasn’t all that bloody, which might even dispel some of the cringe factor that is keeping some of the old fogies away from the sport.
My official response to Tim: Thanks for the attention.
i’m a mma fan and i would say the ppv was crappy as most of the fights were garbage and over way too qucik for 40 bucks also thecard was pretty lack luster, still they made money so it was a win win
yoooo UFC 71 was amazing…all the fights were crazzyyy, yea some ended early so what?? they were both exciting knockouts and the Karo/burkman fight was sickk…ppl just hatin’ for no reason…gota be hardcore fans to love this sport and understand what these athletes go through…Okami vs Franklin should be iilllll…no room for haters here, good job ufcmania
Thanks for the support, everyone.
MMA and the UFC have turned a corner, but it’s not what everyone thinks it is. As a community, we’ve managed to get others to pay attention to us, but they’ve yet to agree MMA is a legit, technique-heavy sport.
Our job as loyal fans of MMA is to correct misperceptions. I believe in being patient and nice to those with an open mind. But to those who are pricks from the start, they deserve every bit of abuse I am physically capable of dishing out.
Its nice to see mma on the mainstream.. but as a loyal fan. i guess im being selfish i rather it not get so popular. I hate people ragging on it all the time, and it was cool when it was small like a hobby no one knew about. u can talk to some people about it and have a great convos and someone would be listening and be like wat r u saying are u crazy.. im goin to miss it being not so popular

great quote. exactly how i feel. at least fighters can earn the money they well deserve

Yeah, I totally agree.
Damn, did Luke lay the smack down in that response or what, haha! Nice! Dave did a nice job as well.
That is the single greatest thing I have ever read!

who are you? great card. i still think pride 33 is the new measuring stick. all it really lacked was the great ground war a la diaz vs parisyan. if pride 33 was a 9.5, ufc 71 was an 8. still really good
Tim Dahlberg sounds like one of those guys who is closed minded and thinks just because he doesn’t like it, the world shouldn’t like it too. He is just an idiot reporter saying anything to make a buck, those kinds of people never die out. UFC is making its run, and I doubt measley guys like him are gonna stand in front of the UFC train and be able to stop it.
I thought the PPV was just average. Karo’s fight was the best.
Screw the media. We know as true mma fans(I hope u r-all of us)the media along w/ the conservatives are wanting this sport to die.TO HELL W/ THEM AND LETS GET IT ON.
Anyone else find it ironic that someone from Fox News is doing an article about other news being fair and balanced?
No amount of hating will ever kill this sport. As it progresses, people will learn more, but there will ALWAYS be those who are ignorant.
The more attention it gets, the closer the paychecks for these guys will be to what they deserve.
I wonder how long the bashing will continue, I know the sport is growing fast, but I am sure getting tired of the Boxing vs. MMA feud, I dislike “MOST” boxing matches, and love most MMA matches. There are fans of one and not the other, and there are fans of both.
The only thing I hope comes out of this is that the MMA fighters get more respect as athletes from other athletes because they deserve it.

Its just a matter of time before more people are backing MMA for what its worth.

I agree, and I think most people who are not “in the know” look at the first UFC events and dont realise how much this sport has grown since then. It’s really incredible how much different the company is now, I mean we have seriously conditioned athletes out there doing their thing, it’s no longer bar room brawlers and guys who specialize in one form of martial arts or another. Now you have guys who must atleast become familiar with 3 or 4 forms of fighting to be successful, which is way more than you can say for boxers. And that is what I wish someone would say to these guys who can not seem to get their head out of their a*s and see MMA for what it really is.
