Earlier this week we passed along a report that put then UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell inside some Las Vegas hot spots and clubs just before his big fight with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 71.
In an article today in the Los Angeles Times, Liddell himself confirms the report and makes no excuses for his actions.
Here’s a snip:
“It’s nothing that I’ve never done before; it was just like any other fight. I just go and hang out. I don’t drink. I just kill time, hang out with friends at whatever club they’re at. I’ve been doing that as long as I’ve fought in Vegas…. If you lose, people are looking for a reason other than the fact I just got beat. I obviously made a mistake [in the octagon]. I did something I’ve been told for years not to do: throw a body shot to the outside like that. It seemed like [the opening] was there.”
Our comments section on the initial post written by Jesse Holland exploded when it was published. The feedback was wide-ranging, naturally.
However, I want to point out one comment from UFC fighter Eric Shafer that supports Liddell’s statements and also provides a small glimpse into the mindset of a UFC figther right before a big show.
Here’s what he had to say:
“To be fair, he was out every night before his last 2 fights too (Babalu and Tito) and kicked ass. I saw him out, because I was out too. Personally I wanted to set my biological clock to have fight time being midday. So I would rather stare at hot chicks from 12-2am than sit in my room and worry about the fight. If you are not drinking, then I do not see the difference…”
Sitting at our keyboards most of us can’t even begin to fathom the depth of mental toughness it takes to get locked in a cage with another man, who is there solely for the purpose of taking you out.
Whether it’s mixed martial arts or professional football, it is human nature in all sports for us to find and debate the reasons behind outcomes of a certain events.
In this case, unfortunately, the court of public opinion seems to think that Liddell’s lifestyle got the better of him on May 26 — not a talented fighter who has already defeated him before.
Liddell is a professional, a champion and a legend in his own time. Put simply, he knows what he is doing before, during and after his fights.
It’s time to give Rampage his due — he was simply the better fighter in 2003 and in 2007.
If Liddell can admit it then I don’t see the reason the rest of us can’t, too.

I agree completely, Rampgae won the fight PERIOD. NOthing Lidell did out of the ring mattered as long as he wasnt drinking. Alot of fighters try to set their biological clock before fights so they are awake and ready to roll at around 11:00pm-12:00am. It makes sense. Rampage just capitalized on a mistake Chuck made in the Octagon. End of story.
I agree, Mania. It’s interesting that some fans find it hard to believe that a guy can go hang out at clubs and NOT drink. People do it all the time: if you’re a designated driver; a recovering alcoholic; just don’t want to drink that night; or if you’re fighting the biggest fight of your life.
Not everyone has to be liquored up to go to a club; talk to the girls; and dance a little. In Chuck’s case, he could just sit there and chill, and the action comes to him. I don’t think the guy would be drinking the week before a fight, but I think a lot of the gossipers and haters probably drink every damn day.
exactly nice article

I agree..To me Chuck is being real, not like other’s who need to make up an excuse to sooth their own ego’s..
I would like to see a rematch sooner than 4 years.
what sux is that I paid $750 to see a 5 round war, instead my man Liddell gets droped, and can’t recover in time to continue. Liddell likes to drink and party, but his is not stupid to be drinking before the fight. He had a bad start, he was not chasing Rampage, made a huge mistake and got cought. Rampage is the man, chased him down, initiated contact, and just brought it to Chuck.
Chuck vs Silva VS Shogun vs Tito, winner gets Rampage ( Hendo)
I would expect nothing less from Chuck… he lost.
Thank you this is what I’ve been saying…there is no exuses..now I chuck fans will have no choice but to admit that the outcome happened solely because chuck was beat by a better man that night..just as i predicted
Very well said. Much respect to a gladiator who makes no excuse in defeat, but learns from it and much respect to your site in its role in progressing our sport.
DanaBlk - That sounds like a good setup. I would like to see Chuck bounce back. He is an exciting figher.
what sux is that I paid $750 to see a 5 round war
? You paid $750 to watch the fights.
Did anyone else notice the way Joe Rogan was talking to Chuck after the fight? I almost expected a retirement annoucement.
Exactly, this is why I like Chuck. No smack talking, or excuses. He took the loss as a man. Personally, I like to see the fight go further, but it did not happen. I love Rampage and picked him to win, but would I lay down a 50/50 bet on rampage over Chuck?? Not in this life time.
My man chuck just made one of his worst mistakes of his life and we can respect that he will come back and be champion again sooner than you think.

I think fans of all sports start churning out the bizarre excuses almost as an exercise to predict which one the athlete will use after losing. “I partied too much.” “I was distracted by problems with my agent.” “The other [guy/ team] cheated.” “The ref blew a call.” How often nowadays do we hear an athlete say, “Nope, I was 100% and just got my ass handed to me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get in some extra practice so I’m better in the future.” Nice to see Chuck say that he just got beat. It’s a rarity now.
I played competitive sports since I was 5, and maybe it’s just me, but that’s always what I thought when I/we lost: “They’re better at this than us.” And after some initial despair, coaches and parents pushed us to keep practicing and working hard so that we wouldn’t lose the next time. At what point do we stop thinking this way and start reaching for the bottomless barrel of pre-manufactured excuses in life?
I know Chuck can take a win over rampage any day all he did was he made a mistake that can be looked over and fix.
Good article- well said. Right after the fight Chuck was obviously very upset and looked like he knew he just got caught. Rampage simply did what every fighter tries to do- capitalize on the other guy’s mistakes. Hopefully we’ll see Chuck back in the octagon sooner rather than later. Pity his next opponent.
“Pity his next opponent”
We hope so. Some guys aren’t the same after getting KO’ed.
Some people just have certain guy’s cards. I forgot the guys name, but in baseball there’s a professional pitcher that sucks ass but strikes Barry Bonds out almost everytime he faces him.
Rampage is the better fighter. Or, at least his style works well against Chuck. Rampage got the better of Chuck’s standup last time they fought. The only difference was Rampage hit him in just the right place this time around and he has better training.
Shogun will most likely take them both out. That or Wandi, or even Machida.

LOL - sad but true
Chuck didn’t only get caught. His chin can be broken..Rampage exposed and wrote the Blueprint on how to beat Chuck Liddell on the groung and hos own game of standing and trading.
CHuck just didn’t get caught, there ain’t no excuse this time.Chuck was beat..And i really don’t think he can beat Rampage. Page has it on Chuck like SHogun has what it takes to beat Page.
That bodyshot was a bad move,I thought that at the time but then I thought naaa Chucks a master he wouldnt of done that by mistake,he must of knew what he was doin and I know nothing, but looks like that was the cause,a stupid stupid mistake which Rampage countered perfectly and won.
I hope that no one is dumb enough to think that just because Rampage beat Chuck so would Wandi and Shogun beat him even worse being that they have beat Rampage,
I think Chuck would beat Wandi very handily and I believe he would beat Shogun,it is a fact that Rampage is that guy for Chuck that every fighter has who is just a awkward fight because of styles but that in no way means it is imposible for him to beat him, this loss I think will of probably done him good and brought him out of that bubble hes been living in and give him a dose of reality.
Chuck is by no means finished.

Agreed 100% I give Chuck max 3 maybe 4 more fights total depending on if he wins…..
but would I lay down a 50/50 bet on rampage over Chuck?? Not in this life time.
I have yet to make a bet over the computer for a UFC fight, especially since all the ‘royalties’. Leading up to the PPV I kept on talking a ton of shit to my brother saying how Rampage is going to whoop Chuck’s ass. He is a big Chuck fan, and so am I. But I am a bigger Rampage fan and am able to see the bigger picture. I bet my brother $150 straight up on Rampage. He pays me $150 if Rampage wins, I pay him $150 if Chuck wins. To be honest, I was trying to make it so that if Chuck wins, I only pay him $100, but he wouldnt take that bet. Even though I bet that 95% of MMA fans would have.
I am happy to see that Chuck isn’t making excuses after his loss. That is actually quite uncommon as of late in big fights in the UFC. Lately it seems like everyone has an excuse once they lose. Either their dazed and confused head thinks that the ref stopped it to earlier, when they actually saved their lives, or they ever so famous ’secrect injury’ fighters always seem to get a week before losing a big fight… I don’t even want to get started naming names on this one….
I love Chuck for reasons just like this. He carries himself like a man and not a trash talking chump.

Was GSP beat by the better man (Serra)? I acknowledge Rampage won but I don’t think the “better man” was determined. In their 2003 fight, yes, Rampage was the better man that night.

First, I’m confident it was a joke. Second, you handled it the way it should be handled if you disagree with someone. Third, my comment was directed toward Can a comp. calculate 10×10x10×10 for piggybacking off your comment and turning what you said into a personal barb AFTER I’d just edited about five of his comments in another post.
i dont like liddell at all, but hes been great and will be back for sure. doubt he will ever beat rampage or for that matter even shogun.
but he did beat vitor and he also beat overeem twice (i think). overeem made shogun look pretty bad standing up til he got drilled with that huge overhand while he was on his back. no way you can say that he has been “fed” grapplers. maybe a little in the ufc, but randy can fight anywhere with anyone. that alone makes chuck impressive.
U guys a loss is a loss and a win is a win, there should be no excuses in MMA. N the fighters should not thank god at all cause whooping someones ass is a sin. u know what i mean. N Chuck is not going to no WEC. what
UFCMania….sorry, i thought you were directing it to me. Anyway, when is Randy defending the title again?
Chuck is classy to the end, he said he made a mistake and lost there’s nothing more to it. I respect Chuck as I respect Rampage I’m pretty sure Rampage would have behaved the same way if the reverse happened.
Every fighter loses. Can anyone name a fighter who’s at the very top of the game and who doesn’t have a single loss? Some will say Evans, but he’s not yet at the top of the game.
Chuck lost…and yes, he got caught. Every fighter gets “caught” when they lose. I was almost starting to see Chuck as invincible, largely because of these blogger sites, but also because he seemed to destroy all challengers effortlessly. This includes his last two belts with Randy.
The point is, every champ will lose. Couture will lose his belt (I don’t see him holding it for more than one fight), Rampage will lose, Silva will lose, Serra WILL DEFINITELT lose (next fight), and Sherk will lose.
Whatever. That was Chuck the Accountant for sure. Sure he was in the club to set his body clock…Better there then in the gym. Better for a fighter to be relaxing with girls then be in the gym pounding out sessions. Better to get ready for a fight hanging with friends in night clubs then weight lifting and sparring. Hell I’m not defending Chuck, if anything I’m bashing his lack of desire and discipline. I do find it funny how people said if he came in with the same physical body and lack of conditioning he fought Tito with, he would lose. Then he gets on the scale looking worse and has, as they predicted, a worse performance. How then do we say oh he did it with Tito so it’s ok, he was in great shape? Soo funny. Rampage trained like an animal and whooped Chuck plain and simple is right, but to act like Chuck gave his all is letting him off the hook to me.
UFCmania
U R THE MAN.
Big Chuck fan & that will never never change. He needs to go up to hvywt. and kick ass because it may be a while for a title shot.CHUCK IS STILL A GREAT FIGHTER AND WILL EVER BE KNOWN AS A FAMILY MAN AND A FIGHTER,ACTOR,PARRRRTY ANIMAL.
Chuck fans never stop with the excuses, even when Chuck has none.

Dude your thinkin too much into it..you don’t train to get your ass kicked in 2 min.. what happened was that chuck unorthodox style made it easy for a fighter like Rampage(striker) to capitalize on a big opening..I mean the guy fights with hands to his side for cryin out loud what did you expect would happen when chuck got in the octagon with a power house, great boxing skills fighter like Rampage..

your right man,Chuck makes 1 mistake in his last 8 fights and everyone is hatin on him,Chuck is an outstanding god like fighter and Rampage is great too but he has a long long way to go to earn the respect Chuck deserves,
I am sure that Wandy is next for Chuck its just destiny, and all the people who never saw PRIDE will be able to see the clips of what Wandy did to Rampage twice and then see what Chucks gonna do to Wandy.

I am a huge Chuck fan but if you look back on my predictions of this fight I always said Rampage was gonna win this one,it seemed inevetable to me,but chuck needed this to happen to get him focused again and I am extremly confident that he will come back strong.

Chuck will not be UFC LHW champ again.
Unless Dana gives Chuck a gift, he will have to work back to the #1 contender ranking and that will be tough. Chuck’s only hope is that Hendo def. Rampage (doubtful) and that Rashad def. Tito. That way, Chuck can fight a tune-up and then dispense of Rashad for his title shot. Otherwise, who is left to fight that is worthy of propelling Chuck back to a title shot? Tito III? Babalu III? Rampage III? doubtful. That leaves Chuck to fight Shogun.

He’ll keep making that same mistake if he doesn’t learn to pick his hands up when he’s fighting a good striker. He’s gotten away with letting his arms dangle by his waist in the past, but now some good strikers are coming over so he better work on his blocking.
chuck liddell is classy as hell. no bullshit excuses. made a mistake and readily admits it. got beat and readily admits it. class all day.
