Wrong, Judo is a sub-category of jujitsu. The man who developed Judo, Kano Jigoro, did so because of the unnecessary complexity of traditional Japanese Jujitsu. He began training in Jujitsu at first. Dissatisfied with it, he derived Judo, basing much of it on Jujitsu, but simplifying it in the process.
No, YOU'RE wrong. "Jujutsu" in pre-judo Japan (before the 1880's) was a hodge-podge of dozens of different Japanese arts comprising everything from striking to grappling to throws. The inventor of Judo, Jigoro Kano, studied a lot of these various arts and decided to consolidate the best ones, discarding the ones that didn't work or were too dangerous or impractical to practice at. Kano consolidated them and called it "Judo"—which incorporated most of the ground techniques you see today in MMA, but PLUS throws and clinch-fighting—including standing armlocks. Remember—"Judo" is just the term given to the consolidated hodge-podge of arts that included various "JuJutsu" techniques. In fact, in America, "Judo" for the early couple decades of the 20th century was referred to (erroneously) as "JuJutsu" or "JuJitsu" or "JiuJuitsu." In fact, a disciple of Jigoro Kano's—named "Maeda"— who learned "Judo" (i.e., JuJitsu) from Kano, left Japan and traveled to Brazil, where he taught Helio Gracie's father all his methods. Yes, that's a fact—Maeda was a Judo guy who taught the Gracies Judo techniques. The Gracies dispensed with the throws and concentrated on the groundwork. The only reason Judo in America and Europe slowly morphed to the point today where throws are probably emphasized about 60% and groundwork 40%, is because the sport-aspect (i.e., Olympics) made the throws more exciting to watch. But otherwise, Judo (i.e. "JuJitsu") is what spawned Brazilian JuiJiutsu. The Brazilians are great at marketing and try to deny where their art came from, because it's not as exciting to admit that their art was around long before the Gracies ever learned it. Judo rocks. This is all true what I wrote...it's history. The Gracies just don't want you to believe it. They even rename the techniques to make it look like they invented them.

Yes, new and improved for practicallity in my opinion. Branched off from Japan did it not?
And I would just like to say these are the kind of arcticles I love to see. The kind of things you wonder aobut, the kind of behind the scenes stuff. Nice one.
judo is a subcategory of jujitsu, jujitsu came first and judo uses certain fundamentals but not others like striking

Other way around boss. Judo spawned off of jujitsu in early Japan.

Lets just put it this way. yah that fight was a little boring. but its a judo match of course its going to be boring. if theres a fight between a wrester who knows what hes doing and a judo guy who knows what hes doing the outcome is always going to be the same. the wrestler dominates. a wrestler will beat a judo guy any day of the week.

I would say it was a fairly rough fight, karo half heartedly trying things and Soko just trying to rough house him. I like Karo but didnt really like the fight. Boring, nah. But not overly exciting. I watch all karos fights multiple times and couldnt watch the judo fight more than once. I do judo and a bit of wrestling.

I remember back in ufc 2 with Remco Perdu when he did soto makikomi and ended with kesa gatame and 4 elbows to the dome. Thats what really got me thinking this is awesome.

There are lots of cool judo fighters in asia and really I dont understand why more dont get into MMA. Don Frye did judo too I am pretty sure.

Lots of people dismiss Judo but I think it is as much a valid a beginner combat system for MMA as Boxing, Kickboxing, Ju Juitsu & Wrestling. You get ground awareness, throws, escapes & pins, chokes and submissions.
You either like or you dont. I found it nice to see the backgrounds of todays mma fighters. Is Judo competed at different weight classes or is open weight?

Soko and Karo are both world class Judokans. But check out my man Tobikan Judan. Or, for the new ppl, Shinya Aoki...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2TKE4fl-o2Q
Aoki is a beast! Its too bad that he went over to Deep, which I am a fan of, but only watch when it goes ontot he internet (by the way Deep 22nd Impact = best event ever).

Everyone flipped out when Diaz pulled the Gogoplata (that how you spell it?), but Aoki has pulled that before, along with a myriad of submissions, one of which snapped the dude's arm while he was still standing. I think he would go real deep into the 170 lb divison and possibly take the lightweight, if he came over here and fought in hte UFC.
