UPDATED 6/8/07: Roger Huerta has been scratched from UFC 74 and will instead be fighting at The Ultimate Fighter Finale on June 23rd.ÂÂ
Roger Huerta’s official Web site is reporting that “El Matador” will appear at UFC 74 on August 25 to face a yet-to-be-named opponent.
Huerta (17-1-1) has been perfect since joining the ranks of the UFC lightweight division, going 3-0 from his debut at UFC 63 back in September of 2006.
Aside from dazzling fans in his three-round war against Leonard Garcia, Huerta is also enjoying overnight fame as the featured cover of last week’s issue of Sports Illustrated.
If true, Huerta wouldn’t be the only lightweight contender rumored to appear on the August card. As UFCmania reported here back in April, Kurt Pellegrino may face off against the new and improved Joe Stevenson.
Should Huerta and Stevenson prevail, it will be interesting to see where they fit into the title picture following the Sherk/Franca championship bout at UFC 73.
Also prior to that the UFC lightweight division will have crowned a new TUF champion along with settling the Penn/Pulver feud.
It’s hard to imagine there was a time when the UFC felt it had no use for a lightweight division.
And speaking of things that have been of no use, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before some unemployed PRIDE fighters find their way to the 155lb division.
Gomi/Diaz II anyone?

Roger Huerta needs another legit win in my opinion. Stevenson has had the tougher fights in my opinion, and should def be first. If there gonna let the winner of Penn/Pulver get a shot first though, im all for that. Penn’s got this.
would be nice to see some events in between 73 and 74. i dont know if a can go 6 weeks without fights. if you thought alcohol withdrawl we bad…….

i hope not, but i think you are right….
would love to see pulver with the upset.
maybe penn will follow in rudigers footsteps and not make weight
He is for real. The guy never stops and will be a factor for the belt.CLASS FIGHTER AND CANT WAIT TILL HIS NEXT FIGHT.
I would def like to see a rematch between Huerta and Guillard. Supposedly, their first fight was incredible. Both fighters are exciting to watch all the time and would only be even more entertaining if put in the cage together.

Will Guillard be ready by them…If so I’m for this also. It might be a step back for Huerta at this point. I would like to see him take on a top 5 guy
I think Huerta is definitely a legit fighter, and should be fairly dominate in the LW division. I think guys like Nate Diaz, and Joe Louzon, BJ Penn, Jens Pulver, Sherk, Fisher, and many more are going to make the LW division a tough one. Cannot believe there was no place for it before.

Love Penn, my favorite fighter in my favorite weight class. He will be a threat to whatever weight class he decides to go to.

ND is my favorite fighter
ill take diaz vs anyone
I love Roger Huerta , he is my favorite LW next to Spencer Fisher of course, but he will be in contention soon.
Huerta vs Florian, whatchya think?
But really it should be Stevenson vs Huerta for title shot.

Yes, please, with sugar on top…
Now that the UFC owns Pride, can we turn the LWGP back on. Pride doesnt need one nearly as much as the UFC does. And they can just hold it over in Japan now in the NSAC doesnt wanna sanction it.

You’ve read my mind. Huerta-Kenflo will be freaking awesome. Joe silva or whoever, make it happen.

That would be legit, sounds like an even matchup. But I think Stevenson is ahead of both these guys as far as contention goes.
Id personally love to see Roger fight BJ. I think BJ doesnt have the compassion to apply himself as much as alot of these primed athlete 155lbs fighters. Granted BJ has the arm bar’s chance… but I see Huerta as being a very very well rounded and competitive athlete.
When do you think Huerta will have a shot at a title fight? can’t wait!
