UFC President Dana White confirmed on “The Blitz” today that UFC 71: “Liddell vs. Jackson” garnered somwhere in the neighborhood of one million pay-per-view (PPV) buys and a live gate of $4.4 million.
This show ranks second in the history of the promotion — Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz II at UFC 66 raked in $5.1 million at the turnstiles.
With a crowd of 14,728 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, one might think it would be hard to get in without purchasing tickets weeks in advance (or without enlisting the help of your friendly neighborhood scalper).
Not true, according to Pramit Mohapatra at The Baltimore Sun.
Mohapatra had a friend who failed to plan in advance — don’t we all — yet was fortunate enough to purchase a ticket at the door just before things got underway.
Kind of interesting, considering the “sold out” event.
I’ll have to keep that in mind the next time I forget to buy Giants tickets. That is of course if “Big Blue” can actually put forth a performance worth attending.

Dank. For some reason that dosnt seem as much as I would have expected.
That’s a hell of a lot of PPV buys.
Yea its alot of ppv buys but there was hardly any word of the even on the net afterwards so i guess alot of ppl saw the higlight of liddel getting owned and didn’t need tos ee/buy the ppv and i think alot of ppl dislike titio so they wanted tos ee him lose especiallya fter the shit he pulled on shamrock
Big money right there. Love to see the sport growing like this.
Dana didn’t say they had a million PPV buys in that interview, he said “we’re hoping we did right around a million buys last night.” While they may actually have done a million, he certainly didn’t confirm that number.
Its a lot of PPV , they will need to make up for the upcoming one in Belfast .. Is ANYONE going to but it ?

Good luck getting a Giants tickets. What the season ticket wait, 12 years now?

Soundly, no.
Sold out events very often have tickets remaining on the day of the event. They are either friends and family comp tickets that were not needed, or seats saved for production reasons that were not needed.
I most certainly will NOT be buying 72. I’ll be at my local Buffalo Wild Wings watching it for free
Thos was a great event…. The prelim fights were serious quality! I was really impressed with Houston Alexander’s fight, but I didn’t like the after fight b/s. I’ve never seen anyone stand over a downed opponent and taunt them! Not cool! Karo should be headlining! That guy really brought his A game.

Are you kidding? Okami/Franklin? I am definately not going to miss it…
Seriously, why are you not stoked about it?

Because Okami vs Franklin is the ONLY bout on the card. I’m not going to miss it but I most certainl will not be buying it. It’s basically a Fight Night card.

Same here my friend, they have free drinks and free refills as well.
You dont need high profile fighters to have a good card.

Your right, but you need big names to sell big ppv #. The pub I go to charged $10bucks to get in for UFC, but this one isn’t worth 40 bucks.

Agree, jb, but that card is just bad. I wanna see Franklin/Okami ( who doesnt ), Marcus Davis ( on untelevised portion ), and Tyson Griffin. I hear Stevie Lynch is a must see fighter, but we wont this time.
Not worth $40.
me and a few friends always put in 10 or so each, and i dont see why we would miss this one. not a great looking card at a glance i admit.
Around 1 million PPV buys, wow. Don’t know about elsewhere but cable providers around here charge $39.95 for the event. So that is nealry $40 million in retail PPV- almost 10 times the gate.
It’s the guys like me who sit on their ass at home eating chips and plunk down $39.95 that are providing the juice.
I think they are intentionally offering less on UFC 72 to see what kind of numbers they still pull. If 72 is reasonable, then we can expect fewer and fewer big fights per card.
Similar situation I believe: the Chicago Cubs have sucked forever. But Wrigley Field is almost always full so the management doesn’t have to shell out for big time players to buy a championship. They are just in it to make money. If they offer crap and we still pay for it like junkies, then they have no incentive to put together great match-ups.

With all the ‘upsets’ lately, I don’t feel so solid on Franklin over Okami.

I think Okami/Franklin is close, hardly an upset.
Interesting to note that Dana White and others keep stating that boxing is dead and how they are kicking boxing’s *ss. but he’s hoping they did around 1 million ppv buys in the biggest match-up of the sport between liddel vs. jackson, yet just 3 weeks ago, de la hoya vs mayweather did over 2 million ppv buys!! seems boxing is still kicking ufc’s *ss!
