The 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) World Submission Wrestling Championships kicked off today in Trenton, New Jersey.
This event features most of the top grapplers in mixed martial arts, including UFC fighters such as Gabriel Gonzaga, Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz, Jeff Monson, Drew Fickett, Kurt Pellegrino, Joe Stevenson, and Elvis Sinosic, among others.
MMAFighting.com gave a nice round up the event and the top participants in the tournament the other day; therefore, I’m not going to re-invent the wheel.
Here’s a snip:
“A bit different from traditional mixed martial arts, the Abu Dhabi tournament is strictly grappling and submission based. Points are awarded based on positioning, control, submission attempts, and takedowns. There is no cage and there is no ring, rather the competitors grapple on a high school wrestling-like mat. If the competitors go out of bounds, they are restarted in the middle of the mat in the same position they were in when they went off. The competitors grapple in a single 10-minute round (20 minutes in the championship brackets) with a 5-minute overtime (if required)…. The tournament is an honor to compete in and the only way to compete in the tournament is either by being a former champion, winning a grappling qualifier throughout the world, or by receiving a special invite. Everyone who is a competitor is a world-class grappler.”
And the weight classes:
65 Kg and Under (Lightweight) (144 pound and under)
66 Kg to 76 Kg (Welterweight) (167 and under)
77 Kg to 87 Kg (Cruiserweight) (192 and under)
88 Kg to 98 Kg (Light-Heavyweight) (216 and under)
99 Kg and over (Heavyweight) (Over 217)
Absolute Class (Any weight class)
If you live anywhere near South Jersey, this is an event that you should definitely try and check out — it ends on Sunday.
And the next time it rolls around — in two years — it will more than likely be at a different spot.
Take advantage of the opportunity to check it out … it should be an amazing experience.

Thanks Mania.
If anyone is interested, you can watch it stream live at ProElite.com for $20 up to 3pm ( I think thats EST ). Then it’s $25 thereafter. If you are new to MMA/UFC this is a must see. You will learn more about the non-striking side of MMA in 2 days then you will over the next 2 years just by watching UFN, PPV, and TUF. If you are a longtime fan like me, well I didnt even debate the $$$ or the loss of a nice weekend staring at my PC for 20 hours. MUST SEE TV! MoreThanUFC!!!!
isn’t that osama country - what are our boys doing going over there
it was interesting 2 c which former/current UFC guys r there
Ooops. Edit to my post above. $25 after 3 AM est tonight.
joe daddy versus fickett, i love it!
awesome - i love this stuff
I really like ProElite. It’s what Sherdog should be. Plus, and heres a secret just for my UFCMania friends ( if I have any ), the fighters there actually respond to you if you message them. Really. Go try. Now.
Man, I got the same feeling today like I did the day before Pride 33. I just cant frigging wait!

The event is being held in Trenton, New Jersey. Now I know Jersey isnt that great, but last time I checked it wasnt Afgahnistan… and secondly even if it was in Abu Dhabi, that is in the United Arab Emerites.
I hope Joe Stevenson does well but there is a lot of stiff competion there and he is not likely to win… but I guess Gonzaga kicked Cro Cop’s head off so you never know what can happen.
well seeing as how he is right and you are completely wrong, then yea, some people do care what “the ghost” is saying. don’t try to act cool cuz he called you out on it and you were wrong.
ibread its chill dude. So what you misunderstood the arcticle big deal, instead of explaining it to you THE GHOST has to make some comment … discuss MMA dammit.
Oh shoot dude that was Framerfred not ibread. Got your back bro.
How long dose the event last for?
How long dose the event last for?
agreed, people are so quick to act on here it’s amazing.
It doesn’t make for a very friendly online experience
Definetly good stuff!!!!
My money is on Elvis Sinosic to take the whole thing!!!!!
My money is on Elvis Sinosic to take the whole thing!!!!!
This is submission wrestling. Regardless of what you may thing about Elvis as a MMA fighter, he is VERY VERY good at this game.
Lol, love ya Mania. I tried to resist. Thanks for the edit, I needed it.
HERE WE GO!
Buffer is announcing. Serious audio troubles to start.
ELVIS IS STARTING OFF THE COMPETITION AGAINST WERDUM!!!!
Werdum subbed him, unfortunately, we have lost video feed during it.
Pe De Pano wins over Jani via triangle choke. Great match. Pe de Pano had a SICK Kimura on the the guy, arm bending and all and the dude wouldnt tap. Reminded me of Kenflo’s knee.
I had only planned on blogging to you about UFC fighters since that what this site is, but there’s a guy fighting this year who has no legs!!!! More specifically, he has a double amputation of both legs from the mid shin down.
Perosh subbed via guillotine choke to Lazzarti. Perosh was in the under 99kg class, so thats why his teammate Elvis fought in the over 99 class.
Okami lost via dec to Mala. Mala is a favorite here and was a runnerup to Lister the announcer thinks.
Marcelo Garcia over some guy named George via guillotine. It was over before it begain. Fickett is on the mat in a great match, results coming up
Mark Bocek, the top N American grappler alive, defeats Ficket 8-0 or 10-0. Great bout though, besides the score.
Watching Renzo right now. Kurt Pelligrino just won his bout. He faces Marcelo next.
Mike Fowler, a guy who got the ADCC call 2 days ago while he was in Guam, and defeated Renzo Gracie on points. Can you say Gonzaga?
Mike Fowler, a guy who got the ADCC call 2 days ago while he was in Guam, and defeated Renzo Gracie on points. Can you say Gonzaga?
wow what about the guy with no legs? that could be an advantage because it takes him down in weight while he could have the upper body of say a 205 guy but due to no legs weighs in as a ww? I know the weight classes are different but i’m just saying…
The guy with no legs lost. Thank God they moved to another match and just showed a 2 min snippet of it live. Honestly, it was painful to watch. Kinda…freaky. He had full quads, but just bone stumps about 4 inched long below the knee so he could actually walk on his knees. Weird, but I give it up to him.
Fedor just subbed Couture by armlock.
.

.
.
Just kidding, there on a half hour break between rounds.
keep it coming mtufc. im enjoying these updates. it makes me wish i was there live. thanks.
Mishima, who recently lost to Kenflo, wins via points over some guys who’s name I am not about to try and spell.
Werdum, who held full mount most of the match, via lightning fast armbar, bellydown against Bedorf. Werdum has won his first two to make the semis.
Pe De Pano on the mat now vs Oliveira. Go to MMAonTap for the first round card. Some are probably wondering what about Joe Daddy and Gabe Gonzaga. Pride pulled a lot of their ppl under contract, and so has the UFC apparently. No concrete news as to what happened. Maybe Mania could look into it while I keep watching the ADCC.
Rolles Gracie wins on points over Rinaldi to move on the semis. The match ended with Rinaldi behind Rolles in a really…gay position. The camera just sat there, with nothing happening except both heavily breathing for 20 seconds. I almost lost the feed from laughing so hard.
The feed has been spotty, so I dont know if Pe De Pano has moved on to the semis or not.
Mike Fowler, who earlier had beaten Renzo Gracie on points after getting the call while sitting in a bar ( like Tank at CR ), just subbed Saolo Ribero. Kinda like beating say, Crocop and Fedor an hour apart.
Last of the non HW UFC fighters to fall as Mishima get subbed via top mount triangle choke to Baret Yoshida ( the best half guard I have ever seen ).
Guess I’ll move on to comment on any MMA fighters left. Mega Megu, Megumi Fujii, wins via …. choke. It was from the side, with both girls kneeling. Kind of a side D’Arce choke/arm triangle. Strange but cool.
Leticia Ribeiro vs Felicia Oh
I hope this match makes it onto Dm or YT. One of the most technically proficient BJJ/SW matches I’ve ever seen. I was standing watching it after the first min.
Over for the day. More coverage of interviews and specials was planned but they had such horrible streaming, I guess they just decided to show the bouts and call it quits. Be back tommorow for the semis, finals, and superfight. I’ll do the same thing.
MTU out.

thanks again mtufc. i appreciate the efforts
i for one couldnt afford to get the adcc i already plunked down 55$ for tonights delahoya vs fm fight. ill probably end up regretting this.
Thanks bw. I hope more of the ppl here at least read the posts. For $20 to get most of the ADCC ( four mats one feed ) over two days was well worth it. I was thinking the whole time, I know, most of these fans are new and wanna see striking since the ground game is more subtle, but it aint like in MMA. There is very little stalling on the ground. It’s truly nonstop action. Ever see an gogoplata turn into an oomaplata turn into a triangle? It all happened in under 8-10 seconds. Crazy stuff. How about a flying arm triangle? Yup, from the standing position. The MMA guys should try it, like Gomi’s famous flying armlock.
I was definately enjoying your posts MTU, thanks for that and hopefully we’ll get the final results tomorrow. Can’t wait guys…
Here’s the breakdown for tommorrow. After this, the Absolute class will compete. It’s like a Pride Open Weight Grand Prix. Anyone can enter, and anything can happen, like 165 lbs Mach Sakurai subbing 285 lb Ricco Rodriguez.
Over 99 Kgs - Weight Class Results
Fabricio Werdum vs. Darren Andy Oh, yeah!
Pe De Pano vs. Rolles Gracie I guess De Pano won.
Under 99 Kgs - Weight Class Results
Xande Ribeiro vs. Robert Drysdale If this comes down to Rib
Cacareco vs. Braulio Estima versus Caca, its a BJJ WAR.
Under 87 Kgs - Weight Class Results
Demian Mala vs. Tarsis Humphreys
Flavio Almeida vs. Romulo Barral
Under 76 Kgs - Weight Class Results
Pablo Popovitch vs. Luis Galvao
Marcelo Garcia vs. Mike Fowler
Wow, the post broke. I had more info on there. Mike Fowler is the guy who beat Renzo and Saulo back to back. Marcelo better watch out, upsets are happening everywhere it seems.
No info on what happenned to all the UFC guys who are under contract.
Here’s the rest:
Under 65 Kgs - Weight Class Results
Leozinho Vieira vs. Tetsu Suzuki
Rani Yahya vs. Baret Yoshida
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZCNrf0IH_U
Here’s video of a guy that would take out any MMA guy. better kicks than cro cop. more manly than Fedor…
MoreThanUFC thanks for posting the results man. What wa the guys name that had no legs.
I think it was Tim Boetsch. Hard to say.
The announcer usually never said this guy in white that guy in red kinda thing. So if I hadn’t seen them before, I usually had for figure it out while he was commentating on who was who. He had moments of genuis and really knew the game, but he was a horrible announcer. His name is Gumby ( not Horn ) and he works for ontheMat.com and has a BB under a Gracie. Hope it wasnt the same one who came to my gym. ( Comment from another thread. )
Do the fighters cut weight for the event.
Do the fighters cut weight for the event.
Some do some dont. Mostly its just water weight. These guys dont hop in saunas and starve. More like a wrestler who needs to shed 5 lbs to make his weight. There are a few cases this year that are extreme. But that usually has to do with a guy getting an invite, but his natural WC is booked up, so he drops down one. But dont forget, this tourney uses an 11 Kg ( 25 lb ) variance. That way the fighters are encouraged to just come the way they train. Also, in a BJJ match, weight doesnt really mean shit anyway. The only one I can think of was 209 lb Elvis v 240 lb Werdum. Werdum got him down, layed on him to apply pressure, and subbed him.
thats another thing im starting to like about this. guys facing each other like fw and elvis, that you wouldn’t normally see in a mma match.
And here we go, day two…..
thats another thing im starting to like about this. guys facing each other like fw and elvis, that you wouldn’t normally see in a mma match.
Man, you woulda seen a lot more of it today during the Absolute division if Pride and the UFC hadnt pulled so many ppl out. Gonzaga, Monson, Aoki, Mach, Stevenson, just to name a few.
There’s been a holhup, it wont start til 12:30 est.
Over 99 up first.
We are gonna see Pe De Pano against Rolles Gracie.
Too bad Werdums match is up at the same time.
Lol, Werdum subbed this opponent in under 10 secs. I didnt get to see it. DAMN!
Awesome Match. Rolles taps out Pe De Pano via arm triangle.
This sets up Werdum vs Rolles, a dream match. Frigging Cool!!!
Lol, Werdum subbed this opponent in under 10 secs. I didnt get to see it. DAMN!
how did he do it? did they say ? did he bitch slap the guy into a verbal submission????
Fowler vs Marcelo Garcia up now.
So many people wrote Werdum off after the somewhat weak fight against Arlovski (but you kinda need 2 guys for a fight and neither was bringing the heat). I love Werdums groundgame and how he’ll lose the UFC jitters as well as get used to the cage. Unfortunately ADCC has not been offered here as PPV, so I’ll have to download it laters.
Marcelo on points over Fowler. Still, for a guy who in his interview said he was in a bar, hadnt been training for competition just training his students, it was an amazing tourney for him. He beat Renzo Gracie and subbed Saulo Ribeiro. Incredible.
The Yahya vs Yoshida match is crazy, ankle lock to heel hook to toe hold to straight lock. And both guys are doing it, at the same time! Not what you see in MMA where the both grab and hold until the ref stands them up. Each knows which leg lock to use depending on what leg lock your in. Smart fighters.
Yahya to the finals on points. Some sick chokes appied to Yoshida. Props for not tapping.
Damn … just now I read the very first post about ProElite offering a stream. Argh … damn, damn, damn.
They said that they were only gonna have 2 mats going, but they have had all 4. Like yesterday, too much to keep up with. Once the finals start, I’ll post the winners. Felicia Oh up against Mega Megu now.
I’m glad they’re showing this one, I posted to Gumby yesterday that this one was one I thought would be great.
Of course as I typed that, they switched…ahmmmmm
Oh taps out Mega Megu in a serious reversal of match flow via RNC.
Kyra Gracie, the first combatant female Gracie, moves on to the finals.
The last semi is up now. A womens match I have no interest in. Finally got to hit F5 to refresh.
Yeah, YTed, its been a banner up on Mania for a couple days now, plus if you’d been around ( hint hint ) I’ve been posting it for awhile. $20US for two days of this shit is just a steal! Best entertainment I’ve had some time.
Bloody, I have no idea how Werdum won. Gumby isnt doing the 5 Ws and H of journalism at all.
Sorry I’m missing your posts, but this stream is taking all my bandwidth. Just to post slows me down. Refreshing takes like 20 secs and kills the video.
In my first non professional post, the hottest chick in the tourney just lost….DAMN!
Kyra Gracie, the first combatant female Gracie, moves on to the finals.
And the first Gracie with a firstname that does not start with an “R”. Also the most sexy Gracie.
For those who don’t know her: http://revistatpm.uol.com.br/53/kyra/pop/f9.jpg
(No, I am not gonna make the “I wanna TAP that” jokes - she’d kick my arse)
And yea, you are right about sticking around. I blame myself for missing your hints to this event.
Pe De Pano v Andy in the 3rd place match.
Pe De Pano won his match and Fowler lost his to finish fourth.
Yoshida v Suzuki shown now. Yoshida wins 3rd. Suzuki had on a flesh colored suit. It looked weird, like he was grappling naked. Grappler’s Quest!!! Live and Nude!!!
Stacy Cartwright now up in the 3rd place bout. Damn, man, she is fine.
Marloes Coenen beats Stacy via armbar for 3rd. Coenen earlier battled a guy in a maych that wasnt explained. She lost however.
MASS CONFUSION. No one knows what the hell is going on. They called matches then called them off.
Well, now at least they have decided to get on with it. Over 99 kg coming up, Werdum vs Rolles Gracie. I’m shaking.
They announce that Monson pulled out with an injury and couldnt defend his title.
Gracie got a slam takedown….straight onto the concrete. Werdum looks ok, but pissed. Crowd boos when the refs starts them upright
Brazilian fire is burning as Werdum shoves Rolles to the concrete. This type of thing doesnt happen at ADCC very often.
They’ve stopped the bout to let them both cool off. I thought Werdum was gonna open hand nail him like AA. I really did.
I havent mentioned this before, but no points are scored in the first 5 mins. Then whistle blows, and for the last half points are scored.
Werdum looked like he was going for a standing overhook, but forearms Rolles in the face. This could end up being an MMA match before its all over.
Werdum gets the first 2 points of the match by takedown with 3 mins to go.
Werdum another takedown, up 4-0
WERDUM IS THE 2007 ADCC OVER 99 KG CHAMPION!
Another coed match. The announcer has no idea why, he’s a lot of help.
WERDUM IS THE 2007 ADCC OVER 99 KG CHAMPION!
WAR WERDUM
(sorry for the Sherdog-style)
this make AA look even better for beating the ADCC champ

Lol. I find it kinda funny also. WAR WERDUM.
Estima up against Riberio. Two Jiu Jitsu masters are battling Sambo style leglocks. The game has come a long way.
Their legs were so tied up at one point that Riberio grabbed a foot and cranked back, only to realize it was his own!
