Season six of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) will begin taping for six weeks this spring in Las Vegas, Nevada, and premier in the fall, according to UFC.com.
Over the weekend, we passed along the official announcement at UFC 70 that current 170-pound champion Matt Serra and former titleholder Matt Hughes will be the coaches for the latest edition of the reality series.
Furthermore, the two will fight one another later this year on a pay-per-view (PPV) card that has yet to be announced.
Here’s a snip from UFC President Dana White:
“We’re raising the stakes for season six of The Ultimate Fighter. Matt Serra, UFC Welterweight Champion, and Matt Hughes, the former welterweight champion, do not like each other at all. It should be a wild ride.”
There are quotes from Serra and Hughes in the release. And, surprisingly, Serra doesn’t call Hughes a “dick” this time around. But, he still takes a shot at the Illinois native.
Check it out when you have some time.
TUF 6 will feature 16 welterweights who will battle for one lucrative UFC contract.

This will be a season to look forward too. I hope the talent pool is great. The future of the sport seems to like TUF fighters
well atleast serra keeps the belt in long island for a while.. thats the only good coming out of this.
Wait a minute. So Hughes v Serra won’t happen in September then as Dana originally stated then right? From this announcement with the two coaches fighting each other for the belt on the TUF 6 finale, this fight won’t happen until like November/December?
if there is any talent at all its gonna be the best season entertainment wise, when they finally do fight its gonna be one of the most hyped up ever, is that gonna make it like diego koscheck?? i hope not
Fall of this year is waaaay to long to wait for Serra’s title defense. That is very unfortunate. The rest of the welterweights in contention have be mad as hell since it sets back their possible title fights until next year. Overall, this was a good idea for the show, bad for the division.
Fall is very long time. What gives?
So basically the entire welterweight division is in a state of suspended animation until late 2007. Bad idea Dana.
There’s no way this fight will happen after TUF 6. It’s too far away. Plus, it won’t be the finale fight, there’s too much money to be made off the PPV.

yeah this makes sense, after all have they ever had a title fight on one of these free broadcasts?

The series will air most likely in September. Why would the UFC make them fight beforehand? Doesnt make any sense — and its extremely unlikely that it will happen.
Neither does have them fighting in September or OCtober.
But that’s apparently what’s happening — “suspended animation” until late 2007 for sure.
Finally, this will be on a PPV card — not at the Finale.
I think this whole thing is bad planning on Dana’s part. Ideally, TUF 6 should premier immediately after the TUF 5 finale. Then they could have the PPV title fight between Hughes and Serra the following weekend of the TUF 6 finale. It would at least cut down some of the wait time. TUF 6 will loose a lot of the drama if Hughes comes out and beats Serra before the TUF 6 season even starts. You’ll see Serra talking about being the champ, but he won’t still be the champ. I’m not saying Hughes is going to beat Serra by the way, I’m simply speculating. Frankly I’d rather see Serra/GSP go at it again just to see if it was a fluke.
I don’t know if I can wait this long to see Serra lose the belt. It’s almost embarrassing to have this guy as the champ. Yes, he’s a great fighter, and apparently a nice guy (mind you, based on his stupid comments this weekend I’m not so sure he’s too cool)…but there is no way he should be carrying around the belt. I know many will want to disagree with me, but can anyone really argue that Matt Serra is the best 170ib fighter in the UFC? Can anyone really argue that he is top 5?

Um…do we need to? He did take the belt, after all. No one gave it to him without a fight (pun intended). We can go back and forth all day long about who may or may not be the best WW fighter, but in the end Serra has proven that he is good enough to win that title. GSP is no softie and he was beaten fair and square. Was it a fluke? That’s a tough word to use in this sport. I would also like to see a Serra-GSP rematch, but now it sounds like that will not happen this year, if at all.
No matter how it happens it has the makings of being a great fight.
This is bullshit
Yeah I don’t like this idea of making everyone wait. However in the end watching serra make fun of hughes during the show then beating him in the fight might make it worth it.
As long as serra does so…yeah i guess i wouldnt mind either shawn!!!
I think they will both make great coaches for the season. Matt Hughes was a tough ass in season 2 and Serra was the ultimate cornerman in season 4. I think this will be a great coaching battle. Serra runs a school. This is what he does… You have to give him the team advantage. If Hughes’ team could win that would be a big moral blow to Serra though. Serra is the Favorite coach. Hughes is the favorite fighter.
TUF is the best show and the fighters coming through are UFC’s future, still love the Banter thrown round between coaches. Hope Serra tortures Matty Hughes. Cant wait bring it on.
I KNOW MATT HUGHES WILL WIN HIS BELT BACK. BECAUSE HE HAS HEART. PLUS I AM FROM ILLINOIS THAT IS NOT WHY I THINK MATT IS GOING THE MAN HAS ALOT OF HEART AND BELEAVES IN HIS SELF.
