“Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is at the show. It is expected he will be introduced as the new heavyweight signing for UFC during the live broadcast tonight.”

– The reliable Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com reports that PRIDE FC heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was at UFC Fight Night 9 this evening to announce his status as a UFC fighter.  (No such announcement was ever made … but Meltzer is right more often than not … it’s worth passing along.)

Yes and I think that is BS. Meltzer usually gets his shit right, but this time I think its bogus. Don’t get me wrong - I’d be the happiest MMA fan out there if it was true, but with Big Nog being 80% blind on one eye and his chronical knee problems… I doubt he’d get approved by the NSAC - one of the reasons he never fought in the US (at least not since it has been commissioned by the NSAC).

I never knew big nog is blind in 1 eye. Is his injury from the accident he suffered as a child or was he born with it.

He had cataracts in one of his eyes. Dunno when they appeared, but from the little I know about medicine it usually takes years to develop those and they most likely stem from malnutrition in the childhood (which obviously can be very easily the case in brazil). Anyway, he had 40% sight at that time and had to undergo the surgery - with a 50/50 chance to make it better or worse. Unfortunately it became worse and now he is down to 20% sight on that eye.

Only the more reason to admire his spirit and success in this hard sport.

I just had somewhat of a source tell me that Nog is going to undergo a correcting surgery - how reliable that intel is: no idea. But if it is true, then the setup for a new UFC Heavyweight is perfect. Nog and Fedor are the two not avenged losses Cro Cop has and it would certainly be a guarantee for great matches, be it Greco/Roman (Couture) vs. Boxing/BJJ (Nog) or Cro Cop - Minotauro II.

if he is going to undergo this surgery, doesnt that mean he will be out for awhile?? i dont know how long something liek that would take to comeback from

Who is Nog, and why does he call himself that? Is his first name Egg?

I cant believe you said that, UM. Lol, I was laughing when I read it. Yes, I gaurentee every top commentor here know just how big this will be. But, unless his surgery works ( hope that is true ), then I doubt he will be allowed to fight. I didnt know his vision had gotten that bad the last couple years.

Ok— just clearing up some things here that I know are misunderstandings for sure. Nog is short for Nogueira which is his last name (for more than UFC). He did not suffer from malnutrition as a child. His family were some of the richest people in Brazil. He was run over by a truck at the age of 10—- not stabbed. His brother, Rogerio, even tried to pull him out from under the truck and the only thing that saved him was the fact that he pulled his head out of the way of the tire just in time to prevent having it crushed by it. His rib went through his back causing the scar on his back and he lost part of his liver due to the same accident. So, the fact that he came from a poor family and suffered from malnutrition makes no sense considering if they were that poor he would never have gotten the care he needed. He was in the hospital for a year. There aren’t a lot of people who wouldn’t go into debt from that alone. You can check my statements for accuracy at http://www.minotauro.net

I’m not sure about the eye issues I’ve read about. I do know he had eye surgery just over a year ago but am unsure if there is blindness there or not, but I hope not cause IMHO I think he’s the best fighter out there right now…. not many if any will stand a chance against him especially if they go to the ground. He is by far the top in submissions. The only one he has yet conquered if Fedor but it was only a matter of time before that happened. Fedor’s gotta lose some day and it proably would have been to the hands of Big Nog. Now that big Nog signed on to UFC I’m not sure that will happen since Fedor and his brother Alexander both want to fight in BoDog. Sorry this was so long!

Erm .. you won’t believe it, but erm .. we know who Nog is! At least MoreThanUFC, Jason Bang and I do. :P

As for the malnutrition part: I just brought it up as a possible reason for cataracts, since I never heard about a other reason. In your series of accidents and bad things that happened to him you forgot that due to the incident he also had a knee surgery and the doctors forgot something IN THE KNEE during the surgery, which made it even worse for some time.

Back to my update and the initial reason why I looked this posting up again: His eye is good again! Apparently over the course of the last months a self-healing process took place and the eye is good again - at least good enough to fight. He also confirmed that he had the mentioned problems with the eye. THIS IS COMING FROM NOG DIRECTLY! Cheers.

You Tapped—- Thanks for the updated info on Nog’s eye issues. That’s more than awesome news to me. I realized some of you knew who he was obviously. I also only addressed the comments that were made above. Hopefully I haven’t caused any issues here. I only happened upon this website yesterday and wanted to add my info. I have the upmost respect for him and how much he’s gone through, come out on the other side of and look at where he is today. His life story actually gave me some inspiration to keep pushing myself to get my black belt in Taekwondo even when some very serious health issues came my way. I am a HUGE fan of Nog’s and probably will be for the rest of my life.

I totally agree. He is a very inspirational guy. Even thou I am a hardcore Cro Cop fan I was never disappointed about his loss to Minotauro. I believe the cage should actually play into Nog’s hands and most likely we’ll see him fighting his way to the top for a potential CroCop-Nog II fight.
