josh koscheck on matt hughes

“Let’s take Matt Hughes out of the equation now because I think he is over the hill, and I will whip his ass. BJ Penn is one helluva fighter. And Georges St. Pierre is obviously the champion. That is where I want to be – up there with those guys.”

– UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck on the elite fighters in the division as told to UFC.com.

Matt Hughes is old – and will never hold the title again.

The only reason he’s still fighting is to upgrade his farm equipment.

I dont think that Hughes is finished, but I think that Kos has a crack at him. I also think that any of the 170 pounders has a shot at beating him. Hughes has been submitted three times in his career. Twice by Dennis Hallman and again by BJ Penn. Hes also been knocked out twice. once by Pele and the other by GSP. The Problem with Kos is that I dont think that Kos can he can do either and Hughes has never lost a decision. Hughes’ cardio is off the wall. I think it would be a very competitive fight. I give the Wrestling egde slightly to Kos. The Submision Egde to Hughes. The stand up to Hughes. If Matt wants a fight to test his Sprawl and Brawl, this one would definitly be it. I’ll take Hughes by very, very close decision. And im not even a Matt Hughes fan.

Spida. At pure 100% wrestling. Kos is definitely better. He did better in College and was a National Champ. I think at this point in time, Matts ground game is more suited for mma though. I’ll definitely take Hughes overall ground game over Kos’s blanket, dont get me wrong

Hughes would not man-handle Kos. I’m not that impressed with either as a viewer because they are both fairly one dimensional. No matter which one of them one, it would most likely be one of the most boring fights in history.

Also, if you listen to the Penn interview, he agrees that Hughes took the GSP fight on short rest, and tried to stand with him, which is a mistake and does not play to his strength. If Hughes comes into the GSP fight in great shape, and is focussed on taking him down and mauling him, Hughes will win because GSP does not have a defense to that.

I gotta go with you on this but Sanchez, as much as I dislike him has a legit run at the title. I think Hughes can beat GSP, as long as he’s not in there tryin to prove he’s a boxer but I think Sanchez has a shot at beating them both. Kos should just shut his mouth. all hes doing is trying to make a big deal so that if the mild possibility of him beating diego happens he gets hughes. not gonna happen cause he doesnt stand a chance in the world.he hasnt gotten better since the show. did anyone see his last fight. he fought a guy who was having his debut in the ufc and kos was scared every minute of it so what did he do. he tried every chance he got to take him down and lay on him. whoop di freakin doo. talk about a loser. and diego is good to but this was his what 5-6th fight in the ufc against an out of shape karo pariysian which a lot of people thought he won that fight 2 rounds to 1 but just gave it to diego for beatin him down in the 3rd. and as for protecting hughes and franklin. wtf are you talking about. for one franklin was coming off of how many surgeries when they threw him in with one of the best middleweights in the world. come on. i dont call giving an unproperly trained dehydrated franklin to anderson protecting plus any one who takes credit away from jason mcdonald is a fool. he is a great competitor and and athlete. just cause he lost to rich franklin doesnt mean hes not worth anything. and hughes being too old is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. sure old age apparently comes quiker for the lighter fighters in the welter and lightweight devisions but at 34 id say hes got atleast 3 years left. getting beaten by gsp isnt a reason for calling sumone washed up. sure he layed on chris all night and i dont agree with that but he was obviousely just trying to make sure he gets his title shot. besides. whens the last time you saw hughes lay on a guy for 3 rounds? kos doesnt stand a chance and he sure as hell doesnt deserve one let alone bjpenn or george. and everyone needs to get off the fact that hughes lost because he tried to stand up. truth is he just didnt have an answer for Georges athleticism and superior stand up and fantastic take down defense. everyone saw he hughes tried to take him down and even had him in mid air but george stuck with it and came back with a big knee to the stomach. Conclusion? Kos sucks, diego is not good enough just yet and if you wanna talk about being protected. how bout givin him a fight with kos right before they probably put him up for a title shot. diego is good and one day will probably be one of the greatest . just not this year. hughes will get his shot again. franklin will too and will probably win this time and for god sakes sumone in kos’s gym needs to tell him to stfu. PEACE

Here’s the break down.
Penn vs GSP is the best match up by far, and the only one I would say could go either way.

Penn, Hughes and GSP will crush KOS and Diego
Penn and GSP will crush Hughes, Hughes will not be Champ at 170 again.
and Diego is going to beat KOS (wush this would go the other way but dont see that happening)
Diego and KOS BOTH need more time and experience before they are title contenders, they are very good, but currently not title material.

and I think that both Franklin and Hughes should have to fight a few more fights before a title rematch because they were both destroyed. If the fight is close or someone got caught – automatic rematch is fine, but if you get destroved like they both did they should have to fight there way up and not via Lytle or MacDonald, that was a bunch of BS…………WE ALL KNEW THE OUTCOME BEFORE THOSE MATCH UPS

Franklin and Hughes shouldn’t have to win few more fights. They have earned their shot. Look at the year of fights Hughes had. I think Hughes was worn out by the fight with GSP. He fought a whos who of MMA fighters with Gracie, Penn, and GSP. Next fight with GSP, Hughes is going to be all over him an regain the championship. I do believe in the 170 weightclass it GSP, Hughes and then everybody else.

BJ is no longer in the welterweight picture. I think that he has a legit shot at winning the belt there but he gonna go where he belongs and where his natural weight is and thats at 155. In that division, its a no contest. BJ is the man and should get the winner of Sherk and Franca.

As for Hughes, I think that he can make a run back to a title shot, but I dont see him or anyone knockin off GSP for a while. And I do not think that he deserves a title shot next. Why not put him up against the winner of Diego and Kos and then the winner gets a shot.

First off were any of you actually watching the Penn vs Hughes fight. He might of lost but BJ was pounding hughes until he broke a rib and if BJ wanted to move back up in weight and fight hughes again i believe he would dominate him this time around..Hughes had trouble with Chris Lytle and couldnt even finish him off in his last fight!. And for the dude who said he would put $$ down on Hughes getting the belt again i got that bet cause he will not…wait let me repeat that….WILL NOT beat GSP…GSP is to well rounded of a fighter and hughes cant stand with him and unless he gets lucky(which every fighter has a punchers chance)GSP would submit him on the ground. Hughes is done he will not be champ again!

He beat GSP once he’ll do it again. Penn couldn’t finish Hughes the last time and wouldn’t do the next time. He cant compete anymore in 170 that is why he’s moving down. If you think Hughes needs to get lucky to beat GSP must not know much about MMA.

BJ moved back down to be able to be the coach of this new tuff show. He said he was going back after pounding Jenns but I can’t say now that there is so many new light weights to contend against, he might change his mind. To say Matt beat him before and he can do it again, BJ beat Matt before and he can do it again. Lets also be honest here. Simply compare the fights between just these three fighters. Matt vs BJ 1 and Matt vs BJ 2…Matt vs GSP 1&2 and GSP vs Penn and honestly say you think Matt is the best of these three. If so, How?? Its a cool thing to me when you can compare apples to apples in this sport. Very rare. I don’t think luck has anything to do with it…but I can’t see Matt beating GSP again and its up to BJ how he wants to train…hes unpredictable. Matts got plenty of heart and the never say die attitude..so hats off to him, but no, he won’t make it back to champion in my opinion.

In my opinion both bj penn and gsp are more naturally talented than matt hughes (especially bj penn)but I feel his biggest problem is he needs to find a better trainer. Gsp and diego in my opinion are training the smartest(I know I’ve taken shots at diego’s intelligence n the past but it has more to do with what he says rather than how he trains) These guys always train with guys BETTER than them in a given area, smart. Hughes is better for the most part than most of the people he grapples with. “I have to tap once or twice a month while grappling” matt hughes. How is he supposed to get better when pat milletech as his boxing coach and matt says hes gotten better with his hands than him? Matt hughes seriously needs to train smarter and with guys who can kick his ass and not his friends as gsp has said. I believe if Matt trained with olymics wrestlers and top boxers like gsp does he would have a realistic shot at both penn and hughes but if he sticks with the milletech camp, I think the odds are heavily in penns and gsps favour.

It sounds like somebody has a man crush…yes thats you True Believer. Matt Hughes was completely neutralized against GSP. From what I’m seeing from younger fighters is a more well rounded game, a fighter should be able able to hang on all aspects of the sport, otherwise it’s obvious. I’m not saying that Hughes is washed up, but the younger fighters are coming up better, and the fact that Matt can’t knock out anybody on his feet is going to pose a huge problem for him when he faces guys that have great takedown defense or are superior grapplers. Focusing solely on grappling is only narrowing his potential.

He was the same fighter that fought Gracie, GSP, Penn, Sherk, Trigg all those guys, if anything his last fight with Georges and Chris, he would have been in great condition.
