Its two differnt worlds, but I tell ya. If Mayweather walked into MMA, he would make as much money, and if he trained right would DOMINATE 2-3 weight classes.

You know I’ve heard that from alot of people that MMA has gotten them to watch boxing MORE rather than less. MMA has gotten the mainstream public back into the habit of enjoying the pugilistic arts for what they are and boxers like Fernando Vargas and Oscar de la Hoya have embraced MMA fighters as brethren in a related sport much like Nascar guys sometimes crossover with the F-1 and Indy guys.

Boxing lost many of THIER OWN fans a couple years ago, MMA had nothing to do with that, but I don’t think Floyd said what he said out of envy, he said it for the same reason he says anything, to promote his upcoming fight. As I’ve said before the growth of MMA can help boxing because many MMA fans are also boxing fans. Mayweather said what he said to get exactly what’s happening now, discussion of him on MMA websites. Already ticked-off MMA fans are thinking of buying his PPV to see him get knocked-out by DLH. He doesn’t care if you love him or hate him so long as you’re watching.

One of the biggest problems with boxing now-a-days is not the number of belts, it’s the number of weight classes. Look at MMA; between Bodog and EliteXC and UFC and PFC, MMA fans still have little trouble distinguishing the best of the best because there are only 5 or 6(if you include WEC) weight classes so there aren’t as many divisions for a fighter to go to so he can run and hide from potential rivals. If boxing would do the right thing and eliminate all “super” or “junior” weight classes, they would go a long way towards recouping some of the success that MMA in general is enjoying.

Boxing was going down the drain before UFC got really popular. I agree that MMA has gotten people to watch other combat sports as well as MMA. I do not however think that we can say whether or not Mayweather would beat anyone, even in boxing rules. However we do know that MMA fighters are usually in better shape than boxers because of the longer rounds and it being a full body sport. Personally, despite what I just said, I don’t think many boxers could stand with a MMA fighter, I just don’ think they would have the chin or the stamina. Things are a lot different when you can’t lean against your opponent.

I don’t claim to speak for everyone but I also don’t think I’m too far off from what a lot of MMA fan thing:

1. Boxing can be exciting
2. Boxing used to be much more exciting than it is now.
3. Boxing got a whole lot less exciting in late 1993 when MMA first got it’s start here in the states.

Perhaps some of these trash talking boxers have forgotten that a lot of MMA fighters we/are boxers? Any time I watch boxing these days, what is usually going through my head is something like “hey I wonder how this guy would transition to MMA?” Anyway, to each his own, but for me boxing is more of a fond memory than anything else.

The difference between boxing and ufc is that your only allowed to punch in boxing ufc is a COMBAT sport, ther is more to combat than just punching. If mayweather put on ufc gloves which gives virtually no protection he would get KO by the first punch. Boxers spend more time holding each other in a corner than fighting and when the REF stops them and puts them back in the center of the ring what happens…. they go right back to holding each other, it never fails, boxers are obviously not as well conditioned as MMA fighters because there gasping for air usually after the 2 round. The fight is just about always on in ufc and the pressure is always on. Oh, and by the way, Chuck could beat ANY… ANY boxer in the octagon or in the boxing ring.

Shade, you have to be kidding. Amateur boxers maybe, but pro boxers like Floyd, can fight 12 rounds easy. The gloves are to protect the hands. If Floyd wore UFC style gloves he would kill one of those guys when he hit them. Most UFC fighters have very questionable boxing skills. ie. they can’t punch very well. I know it is a different sport, but think about this. When you are the champ of all divisions in boxing you are the best. The best UFC fighter is not really the best at anything. There are lots of martial artists out there who don’t compete in the UFC. The reason he said most UFC fighters can’t make it in boxing is because they probably couldn’t. It is more competitive. Just for comparison, What do UFC fighters make in a fight? I think Floyd’s average fight is 7-10 million. More for the Oscar fight. So obviously if one of those guys could compete at that level they would, just for the money. Guys like DelaHoya, Mayweather, etc. have been fighting since they were 9 and 10 years old. They are the best. I hope one day one of these UFC guys gets in the ring with a decent boxer, just to see…

First of I’d like to say that I’m not taking boxing’s side or UFC’s side, but 90% of the people that replyed to Mayweather’s comments are complete hypocrites. First you say that Mayweather is classless for bashing UFC, and stupid for puting an athlete from a different sport in a boxing fight and yet everybody here is bashing boxing and says how they would like to see Mayweather fighting in UFC, or Pride, or K1, doing exactly as he did. What Mayweather did was promote his upcoming fight, and I know people are saying that him talking trash about the UFC won’t get them more interested in boxing but most people on here seem to know about his up coming fight with De La Hoya, which was sort of what he wanted to acomplish with his comments. First of all, I’m not taking any sides in this dispute. For the morons who really didn’t get the whole story and bad mouth on Mayweather misunderstood what he said. Mayweather is just saying that MMA fighters can’t stand toe to toe with an average boxer. This could be true, but I’ve seen boxers fight in MMA organizations and lost, then again I’ve never seen a MMA fighter enter into the boxing world and win. These are two completely different sports and it’s hard to compare. The best outcome is to have two competing athletes compete in both rules and the best performer wins. I seriously doubt that MMA fighters have the stamina to go 15 rounds and the boxers certainly can’t wrestle.
