In the first half-hour of the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5, coach BJ Penn is already causing fireworks, according to Michael Coughlin at WrestlingObserver.com, who received an advanced copy of the premiere from SpikeTV.
Penn apparently hijacks the initial team selection process, asking the lightweight fighters to reveal with whom each would prefer as a coach by raising their hands. And, 10 of the 16 155-pounders vote for the “Prodigy,” which naturally irritates his counterpart, Jens Pulver.
Here’s a snip:
“It [the public vote] not only put Jens on the defensive, it also forced him into a corner where he would have to swallow his pride because some of the better fighters wanted Penn. If Pulver wanted a competitive team, he would have to pick guys that didn’t pick him. BJ literally laughs as he tells the camera that he enjoyed putting the fighters in a position where they rejected Pulver. It’s clear Penn wanted to rile up Pulver and he did just that.”
And the reaction from Pulver:
“I think he was trying to get everybody to raise their hand to make me look like a dumbass. He was trying to make them slap me in the face. I was upset because this ain’t about BJ Penn. This ain’t the fucking BJ Penn show.”
Apparently, the drama doesn’t end there. Coughlin offers up a few other details, which seem to confirm the speculation that this is perhaps the best season of the reality show to date.
In fact, he describes the first dose as “fantastic” and “perfect.”
Here are some other nuggets:
- Fighters are in a brand new TUF house
- Corey Hill likes to run his mouth
- Penn goes out of his way to make Dana White’s life difficult
- Everyone is praying that Nate Diaz (the younger brother of Nick) didn’t smuggle weed into the house
I didn’t think it was possible to pack all that into a one-hour episode. However, it seems like TUF 5 is going to be off the charts, considering also that Coughlin feels the coming attractions trump the premiere.
Beginning on April 5, I think it’s safe to say Thursdays are going to be real fun.

I just got a chubby reading that. Sounds sick!
Sounds like the TUF5 coaches will be alot more fun than in TUF4 - then again, Shonie made up for that. I can’t wait for the first episode. The only TUF4 guys that haven’t been a total disappointment so far are Matt Hamill and Chris Lytle.
Man i cant wait for this season its gonna be awesome. Having one of my favorite fighters as a coach is so cool. I just hope Bj beasts jens at the end, pulver looks like a rough little kid
Out of all of the seasons of TUF, I still think season 1 and 3 where the best. But with Penn in this season, im pretty sure its going to be very entertaining. I have always thought BJ is the best in the world for 155 and 170. His skills and flexibility surpass all. Extremely talented and brilliant, he just needs to motivate and condition himself a little more, and he will rise again to the top.
GO BJ GO!
SunnY, love your attitude and personality!
Reminder to BJ Penn: Don’t act like too much of an ass. In your last two fights you are zero for two.
TUF, soap opera for the 20 and 30 somethings. The intro should be the music to “Days of our lives”.
whats this tall dude c hill gonna do? high kick the shit out of everybody? his legs are like 5 ft. long…this show is gonna be awesome, tuf 4 sucked ass
lol smuggling weed… nice. only from the diaz bro’s.
BJ Penn… that guy… I mean he is one crazy motherfucker who kicks asses and knows how to put up a good show, regarding both fighting and screwing around!
I agree TUF 4 was lame, so Im looking forward to this season. It sounds like Im going to want to actually catch every episode this time. I cant wait til Militich runt Jens “Little Penis” Pulver gets his ass handed to him by Penn, how can he fend off the sheer size of that guys face? He could just drop that suckker on Pulver and it would be done. Just kidding Penn, lots of love. ANd it seems the lack of Charisma is a trait for most of the Militich guys, Horn’s cool, but Hughes, Pulver, Sivia, Fisher(okay he doesnt lack charisma, but he reminds me of a pre-ear cut off Van Gogh)I cant wait to see Jens be humiliated, all I want out of a tv program is fighting and double penetration, but since I dont want to see dped dudes, someone being humiliated will have to suffice.
Ah Dana probably put him (BJ) up to it… He will be Dana’s(Vinces “WWEs”) Stone cold.
I think this is gonna be a good show, hope it leaves up to the hype.
I would have to say if I were in the fighters position I wouldnta raised my hand for either, be the guy who believes he is good on his own but can learn from anyone.
Although it would be hard to not pass up the chance to learn from Penn if given the chance, do you really think these two guys are gonna give the other guys 100% they are in thier division…
As much as I like Penn, I wouldnt mind seeing Pulver get a lucky shot in every now and then.
I just hate it when the guys get immature in the house, its hard to sell these guys as future pros in an organization.
I know its just a show…
I agree, TUF 4 was lack lustre, except for Shonie Carter, he was halarious! The cast was strange, remember Mike Burnett and the eyes that raced back and forth, how the hell was he supposed to win a fight when his eyes didnt even focus. Or the fighter who got booted for leaving and trying to hook up with some chick…It was bizzare…looking forward to this new season..Hopefully it will be entertaining like Lieben, Koschek and Bobby Southworth were.
SunnY
