Mazagatti is the worst ref in MMA because he doesnt protect the losing fighter - his lack of focus and lack of keeping his eye on the losing fighter often ends up in them taking 2-4 shots more, often while out cold, than they need to - someone will die while this moron does his posing in the cage.

Steve Mazzagatti is beyond the worst Ref I have ever seen. This guy either calls it too soon or way way way too late. I can't stand this idiot. Then you get the Mustache what the hell is it raining men now. He looks like one of the Village People.

He is going to end up with a lawsuit because he just can't get it right.

Long of the short, watch "BIG" John McCarthy he is the best for a reason. John also understands the game.
Get rid of him.
I swear this is what will kill MMA. Turning it into amateur kickboxing. We need more refs who appreciate the ground game.
I'm a huge fan of both stand-up and ground-game. I have said this many times before to anyone who will listen: Mazzagatti does not know when to stand up fighters and when to leave them on the ground.

In my personal opinion and any one who appreciates MMA the way a true fan should is that fighters should only stay on the ground if they are throwing elbows (ground-n-poundin), throwing punches, workin submissions, or attempting to gain position (side/full mount, etc).

What I've noticed with Mazzagatti on countless ocassions and especially when you have at least 1 decent wrestler fighting is he will allow the wrestler to lay on top of his opponent for most of a round (and in effect, winning the round without doing much more than laying on his opponent).

There is a huge difference between appreciating the ground game and letting fighters win rounds (sometimes entire fights)by just laying on top of their opponent.

[...] Mazzagatti works for Nevada's commission. I'm not sure who Herbie works for. It's common for refs to be imported/exported to other states, but that didn't seem to happen at 73. At least we got to see Yves "up, up" Lavigne again. Oh, and lay off Mazzagatti; he's my hero.
[...] The fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter features 16 lightweight (155-pound) hopefuls coached by UFC former champs Jens Pulver and B.J. Penn. UFC president Dana White has stated on numerous occasions that he considers this to the best crop of talent yet. UFCmania.com recently conducted an interview with longtime UFC referee Steve Mazzagatti, and the veteran ref seemed equally impressed: “It was awesome, just awesome. Who doesn't love lightweights? These guys are so fast and the fights are so exciting.” [...]
