ufc vs pride
President of PRIDE USA, Ed Fishman, has challenged UFC President Dana White and his organization with a $40 million bet that the top PRIDE fighters can beat the top UFC fighters in a “winner take all” tournament, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Here’s a snip:

“… Fishman made a public challenge to the UFC to pit each organization’s #1 and #2 fighters in each of four weight classes against each other in a best-of-eight “Winner Take All” format, with both companies putting up $20 million. The first organization to win five of the eight bouts would take home the $40 million prize.”

And a snip from Fishman:

“I’ve always known that Pride has superior fighters over the UFC and the fans unanimously agree that Pride puts on a more exciting event. Once I fully acquire Pride FC, I intend to prove we have the best fighters, in what is sure to be the biggest prize, not just in mixed martial arts, but in sports history.”

For weeks, we’ve detailed the war between Fishman and Zuffa — UFC’s parent company — to purchase the rights to PRIDE FC and its fighters. To read those stories click here.

Things heated up yesterday with news from White the UFC recently signed away another top fighter from PRIDE FC, Fabricio Werdum. To read more about his bold statement regarding the acquisition click here.

PRIDE FC has publicly defended that the promotion is not for sale, making this situation difficult to get a good read on.

However, it’s clear that the bad blood between White and Zuffa could eventually lead to a mixed martial arts arms race should Fishman get behind the PRIDE FC steering wheel.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Fishman eventually purchases PRIDE FC, and White for some reason takes the bait on the bet.

Here are the unreal match ups we might get to witness, according to Ivan Trembow in the FightOpinion.com comments section:

Heavyweight Fight #1: Mirko Cro Cop (UFC) vs. Fedor Emelianenko (Pride)
Heavyweight Fight #2: Tim Sylvia (UFC) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pride)
Alternate options: Andrei Arlovski (UFC) or Josh Barnett (Pride)

205-pound fight #1: Chuck Liddell (UFC) vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (Pride)
205-pound fight #2: Renato Sobral (UFC) vs. Wanderlei Silva (Pride)
Alternate options: Quinton Jackson (UFC) or Ricardo Arona (Pride)

185-pound fight #1: Anderson Silva (UFC) vs. Paulo Filho (Pride)
185-pound fight #2: Rich Franklin (UFC) vs. Kazuo Misaki (Pride)
Alternate options: Nathan Marquardt (UFC) or Dan Henderson (Pride)

160-pound fight #1: Sean Sherk (UFC) vs. Takanori Gomi (Pride)
160-pound fight #2: Hermes Franca (UFC) vs. Hayato Sakurai (Pride)
Alternate options: Joe Stevenson (UFC) or Gilbert Melendez (Pride)

Note from Trembow: Please note I’m not saying that I think this challenge is going to come to fruition, this is just from a fantasy match-up standpoint of “what if” it did happen.

These match ups are downright mouthwatering. I think it’s safe to say that Liddell would fight Silva, but that’s the only real issue I have with this dream card.

Amazing.

I read this 5 hours ago or so elsewhere. It’s nothing but hype. Dont get your panties in a wad guys, this will not happen. Fishman figures if it comes off, then $200 mil in PPV - $100 mil to Dana ( split PPV )- $40 mil if he loses. He walks with $60-$140 mil. If it doesnt, which it wont, he gets press, ppv buys for tonite, and more $$$ to buy Pride.

Hope ya’ll are gonna tune in tonight. One great card. I know this is a UFC site, but MMA is MMA is MMA. Diaz vs Gomi is like Liddell vs Rampage to me.

this is too good to be true…

kinda leaves gsp and hughs out of the senario.

Maybe include a ninth fight… as a tie breaker

What would the rules be…
Champions fight by pride rules and contenders fight by ufc rules???

Who would ref it…
or if after 5 rounds no winner.

It will depend on what shore its on. To maximize profit, I think it would be here in the US.

But it’s all just fantasy anyway.

The UFC would be silly to not somehow include GSP and Hughes into those fights though. There would be two wins right there. Pride has no answer to these guys, other then maybe let gomi have a go at them, but I do not think that idea would be a good one cause gomi would get his ass kicked, or let Hendo fight GSP, but then GSP would be giving up all that weight to Hendo, and there is already a good fighter in Marquardt to fight Hendo, but the UFC needs to get GSP and Hughes involved somehow, otherwise the most dominant division in the UFC would be non-effective in these fights, which I think is unfair. Secondly, if I was UFC, I would give Sylvia up to Fedor, let Fedor have that fight, and save Cro Cop for Big Nog, so they can split the heavyweight fights. Then, the UFC should be on the phone right now with Matt Lindland, telling him that you need him to come to the UFC to kick some ass against Pride, because I hate to say it, but I think he is the best middleweight in the world after watching a bunch of his fights. And lastly, let Sobral fight Shogun. Sobral is the last guy to defeat Shogun in match fairly (shogun lost to Coleman by broken arm), so maybe Sobral’s style of being better on the ground matches well against Shogun’s unbelievable stand up game. Who knows, but this so called bet is awesome, although I think it is 2-3 years from happening, once the UFC gets more money and becomes a deeper league then Pride.

And also, watch the Pride card tonite guys. Although I am a huge UFC fan and will always like it more then Pride, still a great card tonite, and we will be able to see two of the fighters who should be Chuck’s competition right now, Wanderlei and Shogun. Looking forward to watching it

So you have Dan Henderson as an alternate in the 185 weight class are u insane hes only the Pride welterweight champion and ontop of that hes fighting Wanderlei Silva tonight for the middleweight belt witch makes him the #1 choice wich in turn makes for one of the best fights out of that entire card Anderson Sylva Vs Hendo.

It would look like this…champs vs. champs…then a second fight as so…

HEAVYWEIGHT
1. Fedor vs. Sylvia - Pride
2. CroCop vs. Nogueira - UFC

205 lbs.
1. Liddell vs. Silva - UFC
2. Tito vs. Shogun - Pride

185 lbs.
1. Silva vs. Henderson - Pride
2. Franklin vs. Filho - UFC

170 lbs.
1. GSP vs. Kikuchi - UFC
2 Hughes vs. Trigg - UFC

160 lbs.
1. Gomi vs. Sherk - Pride
2. Sakurai vs. Penn - UFC

Fedor would demolish the Grasshopper. CroCop has already proved he’ll beat anyone not named Fedor. Liddell would destroy Wanderlai. Shogun is washed up after his injury, but he crushed Rampage…which is why Tito would get the call. Rampage isnt the same after the Chute Box ripped out his heart. Hendo would take Silva down and beat his face in. Franklin is a monster at 185 and would have trouble with Filho. 170 lbs isn’t even a contest…you can throw in Diego/Karo/Kos instead of Hughes and I see it ending the same way. Gomi is a monster, but with a loss to Penn already on his resume…so if BJ gets the belt by then it could be interesting. Penn is a force at 160 and Sakurai would be a rag doll in that fight.

Ok, maybe the henderson - gsp comparison is not the best. What I am trying to get at alex is the UFC cannot go into this competition without any welterweight fighters. It is by far the deepest and best division in the UFC, and it would be stupid for the UFC not to have their best division represented.

First of all this won’t happen. At least not any time soon, but if It did happen the matchups are all wrong. The #1 and #2 spots would be chosen by actual rank in the divisions, not by opinion. it would be Chuck vs wanderlei at #1 in LHW, and Sylvia vs Fedor at HW. Now Mirkop vs Nogueira makes sense. Sherk has a good chance against Gnomi, and i’m pretty sure Anderson Silva would beat Henderson, and I think we all know that Chuck would beat Silva. On other notes BJ should fight, and so should Tito, and maybe Rampage vs Arona

Besides Liddell I do not think any UFC guy stands a chance in any of these fights. This is not coming from a pride fan boy either I love both organizations equally. What UFC can do to stand more of a chance is have the pride light weights move up to welterweight and some ufc welterweights move up to middleweight. Lets face it the welterweight division is where all the UFC talent is at.

Imagine, Gilbert Melendez vs Diego Sanchez. These 2 guys have the best cardio in all of mma.

And for the hell of it put John Fitch vs Hayato Sakurai. This would be a fucking bloody brawl.

Paulo Filho is to damn good on the ground for Anderson Silva. GSP would have to move up to face him. He has a better take down defense.

Gomi said in an interview of his that he wants to fight sean sherk in 2007 and that it would be an easy fight for him. So I think he needs a rematch with bj penn, one of my all time favorite fights by the way.

Chuck Liddell vs Shogun would depend on if they are going to fight under Nevada State Athletic Comission rules or those japanese pride rules.

Heres what I think. First off, they should fight with Prides ruleset but in a cage to even it out. This could easily be the highest grossing event in PPV history if done right. I personally don’t think that doing just #1’s and #2’s would suffice as both organizations best fighters might not be in that ranking. I’ve thought pretty hard about this and here are my fights in the 4 divisions as they’re wouldn’t be a 170 division since Pride doesn’t have one. I’ll have two fights plus an alternate in every division.

HW:
1. Fedor vs Crocop (only makes sense)
2. Big Nog vs Arlovski (much, much better fight than vs sylvia)
Alt. Barnett vs Sylvia/Werdum (Probably Sylvia)

LHW:
1. Chuck vs Wandy (This has to happen)
2. Shogun vs Babalu or Tito (Babalu has beaten him before)
Alt. Rampage vs Arona 2 (another big slam?)
OR
Tito/Machida vs Lil Nog (lil nog takes it either way)

MW:
1. Anderson Silva vs Paulo Filho (Henderson is a terrible matchup for silva)
2. GSP/Hughes vs Hendo (fuckin great either way)
Alt. Franklin vs Kang (I’d love to see this fight)

LW:
1. Gomi vs BJ Penn (BJ whipes the fuckin floor with any pride LW)
2. Sherk vs Hayato Sakarai (Probly Sak unless Sherk shows up big time)
Alt. Hermes Franca vs Gilbert Melendez (GM takes it, god damn i wish the UFC woulda picked him up)
OR
John Fitch vs Sakurai (I like that idea from earlier)
OR
Diego Sanchez vs Melendez (liked that too)

All in all this would be the best thing ever IF it actually happened. The big problem is that Pride may not have some of these fighters by the time it ever does. I just set up the matches that I think would be the best fits vs each other, they’d probly go differently but these are all fights I’d want to see anyday.
This would be a fuckin dream come true if it happened

i would put sylvia against fedor. especially since cro cop already got his chance. dont get me wrong, i hate sylvia and everyone from that camp, but hes still a leviathan with huge a huge reach and good power and he displayed he now has a great sprawl against monson. just saying

Here’s what I think:

Heavyweight
1. Sylvia vs. Fedor
2. Cro Cop vs. Nogueira

Light Heavyweight
1. Liddel vs. Rua
2. Ortiz vs. W. Silva

Middleweight
1. A. Silva vs. Henderson
2. Franklin vs. Filho

Lightweight
1. Sherk vs. Gomi
2. BJ Penn vs. Sakurai

All titleholders should be fighting in the number 1 spot except for Wanderlei Silva. I would’ve give Filho the number 1 spot in the middleweight division but I think Henderson deserves the spot because I know for sure that he’s going to knockout Wanderlei Silva and hold two championship belts.

Lets be honest, who gives a shit who would win UFC or Pride. Even if you are total fans of one organization or the other. This would be the biggest thing ever for the MMA FAN, since the first UFC PPV event in the early 1990’s or how ever many years ago it was. This would be the World Series of MMA! I would gladly lay out the ppv funds, call in sick to work and put the women and children to bed to watch this regardless of outcome, even though I am a UFC fan, I am an MMA fan first and this would be a god send.

It’d be a great set of fights, but Tim Sylvia need relieving of his belt by CroCop 1st cos lets be honest, fedor would batter Tim and CroCop Fedor is the rematch we ALL want to see.
All the old “Pride is king/UFC sucks” brigade are probably singing a little quieter now Wandy got spanked HA HA HA. Dan Henderson is noe THE man (not inc heavyweights) and would now be a great possible match up for Anderson Silva OR Chuck Liddell. Bring it on

Fishman is trying to make it seem like the issues between UFC and Pride were majorly on the UFC’s end (talking about the Silva - Liddell fight.)

But make one thing clean, if this did go down, and all the major names in the UFC prevailed, Pride would be in some serious hurt.

Here we go all we need to have a total of 10 fights on this card. My first 5 fights should be in a Pride style ring as labeled #’s 1-5 below. Then have an intermission and have the crew swap the ring out for and Octagon for fights 6-10. In case of a tie the need to have one alternate fight that could come last in the Octagon being it needs to be held in the USA in a Stadium to maximize the money potential for this event. Let the Pride guys call the first 5 fights on the PPV and the UFC’s for the last 5. As far as ref’s go anything int he Ring will be Pride and the Octagon will be the UFC’s. My dream situation for the PPV of the Century UFV vs. Pride!!!! Please make this event happen!

UFC vs. PRIDE

HW:
Silvia vs. Barnett(Octagon)#6
Cro Cop vs. Fedor(Ring)#5
Arlovski vs. Big Nog(Octagon)#8

205:
Lidell vs. Silva(Octagon)#10
Ortiz vs. Shogun(Ring)#4

185:
Silva vs. Hendo(Ring)#3
Franklin vs. Filho(Octagon)#7

170:
GSP vs. Diaz(Ring)#2

165:
Sherk vs. Gomi(Octagon)#9
Penn vs. Sakurai(Ring)#1

Alernate:
GSP vs. Trigg

Keep in mind that this is not just a sport it’s also business. Both White and Fisherman are obviously very good at what they do. They see there is a possible record breaking, History making event here. Pride and the UFC have in the past been in negotiation’s for Fighter’s from each promotion to face off. This is not impossible or just a dream. We can make prediction’s of who would face off and what the out come would be…that’s alway’s fun. But the reality is White and Fisherman are business men and this sport on it’s grandest scale is based on MONEY wich come’s from ENTERTAINMENT for US! The “fight Fan”, the guy who buy’s Xience products-buy’s PPV’s and DVD’s-the guy who spends all his money on fight club memberships-the guy who buys/orders his favorite fighter’s gear-buy’s the magazine’s on and on. The ball is really in Dana White’s court. Show some fuckin Ballz and respond Mr.White! This guy who’s alway’s talkin “no fuckin around” and “Show some ballz” should take his own advice that he give’s his fighter’s. Fisherman has publicly challenged White (that shows ballz).
If there is enough pressure on White and if there is enough money there to make him happy. This “can” happen.

It’s ALL up to Dana

Why would the UFC ever agree to this? All it would do is solidify Pride’s claim that they are a contender in the USA. Whether or not that is true, if the UFC agreed it would be introducing many of its fans to the competition. It would be a bad move on the UFC’s part if it wants to try and downplay Pride’s entrance onto american soil. This event would basically come off as the UFC saying that it is equal with Pride. Is that true, probably, but from a business stand point you want to portray yourself as better then the competition, and not on equal footing as them. Well thats my belief anyways.
