Not only are the fans more knowledgeable about the sport, MMA is actually considered a mainstream sport in Japan (unlike in the US) and garners huge TV numbers. If anything, it would be retarded for the UFC to ignore Japan and focus their efforts solely on countries like Mexico and Great Britain where there is currently little mainstream support for MMA.
