With all the fresh blood in the UFC — as well as some solid and not-so solid performances turned in this month — we decided to update our UFC Fighter Rankings for the last time in 2006.
(Normally, we update on the 15th of each month).
There might be some mixed martial artists on there with whom you are unfamiliar. Rest assured, however, these guys can fight.
I’m willing to bet that there’s also a few fighters who you think should be on the list and aren’t. Or, ranked fighters who you dont think deserve to be there.
That’s the reason we’re soon going to let the fans rank the fighters. It’s a dynamic new feature that we hope to have live relatively soon.
In the meantime, you’re going to have to settle for our take on the best fighters in the UFC.

Where’s Jardine on this list? He wiped the floor with griffin last night. he should get a crack at lidell. forest would have gotten a shot if he won. the dean of mean is underrated.
I agree with Zack-Out. The Forrest Griffin puzzle has been solved. He will never be the same fighter again. And, why wasn’t K-Flo one of the top five one-fifty-fivers? How can K-Flo go five rounds against the current champ, and not be there, while an embarrasing has-been like Pulver is there?
i agree with Zack-out and Erhardt. also, why is tito below babalu? babalu hasn’t even gone a total of 1 round with liddell, while ortiz has gone a combined 5. another thing-why is fitch ahead of parisyan? fitch is untested, while karo has been in with guys like sanchez and GSP. and what about lauzon. i’m sorry if i’m starting to seem like a lauzon-fanatic, but why does pulver keep getting rated above lauzon?
Come on guys……… How in the hell can you rank GSP above Matt? 3 groins kicks is all it takes to impress you?
Remember these words…… Legends NEVER die. Matt will be back….. guarantted, and GSP will just be another trophy.
It impresses me! lol
1st of all jardine is not well rounded what so ever and k-douche(i mean kenny florian) just barely survived that fight with “the muccle shark” are you serious? He almost died!
If bj would quite smokin the gonja for a short while to get his cardio up he would dominate both light weight and welter weight classes.
Why are individuals who have never fought in the UFC being ranked?
Along those same lines, why is Rich Franklin scheduled to fight Jason MacDonald? Until his last fight, Rich was the champion and no one would have even entertained the thought that Jason should fight him. Jason is not even ranked. He has only 2 fights in the UFC. In both, he was expected/supposed to lose. Good for him for proving everyone wrong but nevertheless I say – Jason deserves to have a chance for more fights to get a bit of seasoning and Rich should be fighting people that are ranked in the top 5.
Matt Hughes was a great champion for a long time but this is a new breed of fighters today. He cant compete with a fighter that can strike. He always had just good enough striking to set up that wwf style take down he repeatedly used. GSP is not even one of my favorite fighters but his speed, punching and kicking combinations, and fierce competetive spirit will always overide the pure wrestling/ground and pound style of Hughes. Now days mma fighters study the essential arts such as; kickboxing, freestyle wrestling(sambo and greco roman), jiu jitsu, not to mention arts like judo, boxing, and ext… Basically throwing the right combination of skills together to create the best weapon. Matt Hughes is no striker, sorry boys and girls. He has the whole package up till the kickboxing(the most important part.
I agree with scotty, BJ Penn has by far superior skills to Hughes and GSP but just needs to hit the gym a little harder. Well atleast enough for two solid rounds.
Oh, AND I ALMOST FORGOT TO RUFFLE SOME FEATHERS
THE TOP 3 FIGHTERS THAT SHOULD BE IN THE UFC:
HEAVYWEIGHT- 1. FEDOR
2. TIM SILVIA
3. RANDY COUTURE
LT. HEAVYWEIGHT- 1.CHUCK LIDDELL
2.TITO ORTIZ
3.RAMPAGE (BEFORE CHRIST)
MIDDLEWEIGHT- 1.FRANK SHAMROCK
2.ANDERSON SILVA
3.RICH FRANKLIN
(CUNG LE will be a force to recon with soon)
WELTER WEIGHT- 1.BJ PENN
2.ST.PIERRE
3.MATT HUGHES
LT. WEIGHT- 1.BJ PENN
2.SEAN SHERK
3.SPENCER FISCHER
Where to start…
I think the two most exciting divisions are the Welter Weight and Light Heavey Weight Divisions. Everything else is just wishy washy right now. I wonder what it would be like to see the UFC and Pride do somekind of cross-over or just pick 3 divisions each that way all the talent according to weight can be in the same area/program.
Anyway with the whole Welter Weight Division, Best down…
Georges St. Pierre, Definitly got it all together.
Matt Hughs, I dont know I am kinda flip/floppy on this guy he is steady but you can see he was outta sorts in the fight vs GPS and it has nothing to do with the kicks to the sack, take your time and dont fight till your ready.
Diego Sanchez, this guy is just in great shape and never stops working. His last fight with Parisyan though you could tell he had met someone his level.
Josh Koscheck, is more or less on par with Diego except I see where he will pass him in the long run. He is learning and adapting his game Dieago isnt.
Karo Parisyan, MR JUDO can definitly do his stuff, however he seems like he cant finish fights. I did see him adjusting his game in his last fight he did no grappling really and tried using his mitts more and it worked. I kinda use him as the benchmark as to who is top in this division. (For now anyway)
Bj Penn, He is pretty much on par with Karo but on the down slide.
Matt Serra, A very weak vs of Parisyan. I enjoyed him on ufc4 but really he doesnt stand a chance vs GPS.
Shoni Carter, Wild and unperdictable and gives me the feeling he will only be around for another couple of matches. I wouldnt wanna watch him flail around.
Royce Gracie, See where I am going with this. Once upon a time Royce was good, then the UFC actually started searching for talent. Thanks for the memories…
With Rampage and Cro-cop coming to america I wonder how much longer it will take before Fedor follows. God help the UFC fighters when anyone from Pride comes over. I hate the whole “Ring” thing in Pride, I wish someone would come up with a better “Area” like maybe just double the area of the ring but have a 10ft safety area. Yellow card athletes for rulebreaking and stop the match and a loser is in the safety area. There really would be no excuse for being in the safety area, the fighters are there to fight not run away.
Sorry for rambling on.
Oh and Randy Cotour should not be fighting Tim Silvia, in the old wwf I used to hate when wrestlers would come out of retirement. I could see maybe like a “Legends” match against someone from Pride that retired.
As for Jason MacDonald, I think him vs Rich Franklin is a smidge early but its trial by fire and atleast he will know where he stands in the division (Top or Middle)
I would like to see Lutter win vs Silva (Flip a coin)
Tito is definitly ahead of “Babalu”.
Anyway can’t wait to see the next ufc tv show. I heard that there is plans to do something like that in Canada, Quebec to be percise.
i got two replys for that guy Robin, first of all NICE NAME! And second you dont know shit about mma!
I think that KENFLO should be on the top lightweight list because he did fight five rounds with “the muscle shark”…just my opinion
Sorry “Willard” if that is even your name, you just probably tried to come up with a super cool name to make me look bad. Can you sense the sarcasm…
Post something other than trashing someone else. Like some ideas about Pride or UFC.
What is wrong with some of my ideas or feelings, enlighten me.
Let me know where you are coming from so I can see the faults in my thinking.
Robin, no need to engage Willard. Your thoughts are very well drafted and clearly you know much about MMA/UFC. As everyone knows, if someone doesn’t have the intellectual horse-power to counter your position they instead attack your character or make disparaging remarks.
I don’t think anyone else took Willard’s remarks seriously so neither should you.
That said, we should also give Willard some leeway. Maybe he or she was just having a bad day. We’ve all had one of those. The good thing is that a bad day is just that – i.e. it’s one day and so is over in 24hrs.
Now Dennis, plenty of our legends have died. Matt was givin all the time he needed to recover from the groin kick. (2 groin kicks by the way) ever since he almost lost to trigg from a groin kick Matt is really quick to cry to the ref. Be it a poke in the eye or a kick thats kinda close he makes sure he gets his recover time before the fight continues. G.S.P has had great battles this year and Dennis, it was a kick to Matts head that ended the fight. So he is by far number 1 in his weight class, right now. PLUS please let me say this. One thing I love about the sport is the respect the fighters have for their fellow fighters. Why do so many people here not follow that example and show respect to fellow fans??? Opinions are just that. Let the fighters do the proving.
Tommy’s comments about being civil to everyone and respecting each person’s opinion are right on the money.
Enough about BJ Penn being the best.
As a disclaimer BJ is my favorite fighter. First he lost to Matt. Second, even though his loss to GSP was bullshivic, I think it would have been a way different fight if George didnt get poked in the eye forty five seconds into the fight.
It would be fun, however, to see him beat up the muscle shark. BJ needs to get down to 155 and protect the weight class from Gomi and all the other pride dudes coming in.
Anyone else think that Guillard could be the BEST 155′er if he didnt get caught with that choke?
In all respect, this is a big UFC site dedicated to the UFC but your ranking are pitafull.
- Spencer Fisher second ranked? What about Melvin Guillard? Dokonjonosuke Mishima? Tyson Griffin, Clayton Guida? People underestimate these Lightweights in the UFC. Urijah Faber is top ranked and Griffin has defeated him as well as the fact that Clayton Guida’s record is pretty much flawless and has a Split Decision loss over top ranked Gilbert Melendez. Rediculous ranking. Brandon Vera over Heath Herring, yeah, great fighter, but Vera is getting WAYYYY to much credit, he’s a great fighter, yeah, but cmon. No Dean Lister? And even Yuki Susaki? Impressive victories and close losses in MMA for both. To go to a decision with Ricardi Arona and Jeremy horn is impressive for Dean Lister even though he lost.
-How is Ryoto Machida, even though he has had some boring fights, not ranked top 5 for your guys, hes already kncoked out Rich Franklin, beatne Vernon White, shitty fight, but won, BJ Penn, and Stephen Bonner, as well as Sam Greco, thats pretty impressive, more impressive than Mike Quick Swick
Just my opinion on some of your top rankings that I disagree with
rampage and crocpo both #1 contenders?????? thay both kill it but at least put up a cpuple V’s in the UFC before the #1 rank. Vera has earned the heavyweight #1 and to be honest rashad should be #1 light heavy as good as his results have been.
ggebag…. I ‘m not too sure a win over a UFC newcomer qualifies Rashad as a top contender, but there is no doubt that the list needs some updates. I would like to toss out a new list, if nobody minds… No, cool, I thought everybody would love it…
UFCmania this is no dis to your list, I am courious to see your next list, and I’m sure you put more thought into it than the 60 seconds I put into this…
UFC Fighters ONLY, Champ gets #1 just because even if he sucks…

This one’s in regards to Josh Koschek, I do agree that he is an amazing wrestler, very young and gifted. The key word here is young. In his last fight against a relatively unknown fighter (in the UFC) named Jeff Joslin, Koz was able to take Joslin down almost at will, but his standup didn’t seem to match his opponent’s (who by the way was a brazilian ju-jitsu practitioner). While “Koz” was able to keep Joslin on his back (wich a wrestler favor’s), Joslin was a ju-jitsu guy who fights very comfortably from his back. The Point : This Sport is the greatest sport of all time…Mix Martial Arts, MIXED. Josh Koschek is a great wrestler who is very stylin/hip, he looks like a champion, I could see him in fight mags with the top of the line fight gear sporting that bad ass UFC welterweight championship belt…A few years from now. Right now I don’t see him in a top 5 position, he’s a one dimensional fighter and matched against GSP, Sanchez or Parisyan he would be destroyed.
GSP is the next level of fighter and Sanchez and Parisyan are absolute animals with a “to the death approach” to fighting. Give Koscheck a few more fights. He’s young…there’s lots of time for him to improve the other aspects of MMA fighting.
A good style match-up for “Koz” against a top 5 UFC fighter would be Matt Hughes. Matt loves to wrestle and could be pulled into a ground and pound style match, I just believe that “Koz” has superior wrestling ability. Could be enough to get that win over a REALLY BIG NAME.
i cant wait to see cro cop on feb 3rd to start with, hes gonna shake up the heavyweight division for sure,i dont tim sylvia havig an answer for tha kind of all around firepower, providing he gets past randy of course.looking at the heavyweight rankings something is wrong if gabriel gonzales is top 5 under the champion, the ufc need to sort this out.why dont they try to sign fedor emelinenko.hes the man.

I dont know but its coming to the point where they should almost but a wins/losses/ Tie for UFC and Wins/Losses/Ties for stats outside the ufc.
Its kinda hard to judge a fighter by the stats he projects, its just misleading. It could be a points system… to get the standings. I play MTG a collectable card game and everyone has a number. You get points by who you play off against, If I beat a sucky player I get 3 If they beat me they get 9 ish. If two sucky or two great players face off you get 6 pts.
This way you dont it separates the players and makes em play off against equal level players. Oh and you lose points, they take em from you. MTG does this instantaneously, I can look up my ranking in (Province,Country, Contenent, World) And during each match it gets updated.
To do the whole thing up probably wouldnt take much(just a lot of time), just start from the start of the ufc and Keep a running tab.
If Randy Loses, do you think he will stay at heavy??, he has like a four fight contract
Heavy
1. Tim Sylvia (champ until proven otherwise)
2. Crocop ( legend precides him)
3. Andrei Arlovski(until someone besides the champ beats him)
4. Brandon Vera (good, not yet tested)
5. Randy Couture(Still better than rest of competion, but the top four are too much for the legend…in this devision
6. No one else is even worth mentioning right now, and whoever thinks Gabriel Gonzaga deserves to be ranked high, has issues…Monson is ok though
Light Heavy
1.Chuck
2. Tito(until someone else besides chuck beats him)
3.Keith Jardine(tested, and proven)
4. Rampage( hasnt had too many good fights as of late, but still has a win over chuck
5. Babalu/Rashad…this might be a good fight to see where Rashad stands
6.Forrest Griffin(has to be here right now, i think forrest has too much heart to let the bad loss get to him, i see him beating Jardine in the future, i also think hes better than Rashad, but has to be at 6 after the loss)
……of course if Randy drops to light heavy after Sylvia fight, he gets #2 spot
……id like to see Bisbing drop to Middleweight, hes a small 205, and can mix it up better with the middleweights i think
Middleweights
1.Anderson Silva
2. Rich Franklin (he’ll be back for sure)
3. Mike swick (i love Rich, but i think Swick is the only one that has a chance to beat Silva right now, styles make fights
4.Nate Marquet(he might suprise everyone later, but a win over Dean Lister doesnt get him top three)
5. Depends on what night it is, Dean Lister, Leben, McDonald..all decent, but not comparable to the top 4…Grove needs some more fights to be considered
Welterweights
1. GSP (its gonna be like this for a long time)
2. Matt Hughes(was champ forever, as of right now GSP is the only one that can beat him
3. I guess DIEGO(not yet tested, an awesome fight with Karo doesnt mean he can beat Matt Hughes, now if he would have dominated Karo, like GSP did in his first UFC fight, then there might be debate
4. Fitch….hes a stud
5. Karo…well rounded but someone already mentioned how he draws the line on whos really good and whos ok..i agree
6.Josh Koscheck/Josh Burkman…Both decent, but will improve in the future most likely
Lightweights
1. Sean Sherk(champ until proven otherwise)
2. BJ Penn(best all around fighter at 155, should fight here i think…Gomi watch out
3. Joe Stevenson ( i think joe is being underated, he has no fear in taking tough fights…like a Diego does
4. Hermes Franca…well rounded and tough, could be a spoiler to anyone he fights
5.i guess Kenflo..as much as i hate to say it, hes pretty good and dominate at 155
6. Jens Pulver…yes got caught and may be going down hill, but he has fought some of the toughest dudes in the world and has done very well for himself, so to put anyone else in front of him right now is stupid
7. I want to a see Joe lauzon vs spencer fisher, see if Lauzon was a fluke or for real
You are!!! tim silia sucks
tim sylvia stinks he has a mom
Sylvia is a paper champ…Cro-Cop or Vera could take him out while they sleep. Randy assures that Tim holds on to that belt again.
Nice analysis MMA dude!
MMA Dude has great rakings, atleast I think so, but after reading everyones rankings I’m very shocked to see that everyone’s left out David Loiseau out of their middle weight rankings. I know he has two losses in a row but they were to two of the best being Swick and Franklin. Does nobody think he’s still a top fighter in the middle weight class?
of all the UFC fighters i think these are the best out of all the weights:
heavyweight:
1.Randy “the natural” couture
2.Mirko cro cop
3.gabriel ganzaga

1.anderson silva
2.rich franklin
3.nate marquardt
4.yushin okami
5.josh macdonald
welter weight:
1.matt hughes
2.josh koscheck
3.karo parisyan
4.diego sanchez
5.matt serra
light weight:
1.sean sherk
2.bj penn
3.joe stevenson
4.hermes franca
5.spencer fisher
Why rate every class? There is one class where there is a clear #1 worldwide. When will an undisputed heavyweight champion be crowned in the MMA? Yahoo’s ratings have dropped Fedor to the #4 spot though he is clearly the best fighter in the world today. They say he is ruining his reputation by fighting cream puffs, QUACK! He has already beaten the present UFC champion half senseless! With wins over Coleman, Kerr, and Noguira, who can question Fedor? Noguira has beaten the best time after time, but was nothing for Fedor. WHO’S THE GREATEST? FEDOR EMELYNENKO!27-0-1
