The following news trumps any UFC Fight Night at Miramar results, which is the reason behind our lack of analysis.
Sherdog.com is reporting that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic — reigning PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix champion — is Octagon bound.
Here’s a snip:
Filipovic, the No. 2 heavyweight in the world behind PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, would make an immediate impact on a division that has long been considered among the weakest in the UFC. Terms are not known, but it’s expected Fillipovic, 32, could sign one of the most expensive multi-fight deals in UFC history.
On the heels of the WFA and WEC deals, signing Cro Cop represents a landmark moment in MMA that could significantly change the landscape of the sport in 2007 and beyond.
Put simply, these three deals in less than a week — along with the slow death of PRIDE — represent the MMA version of a perfect storm and clearly shift the balance of power of the sport to the UFC.
And no doubt about it, the addition of Cro Cop to the UFC heavyweight ranks adds instant credibilty to the soft UFC division and creates a huge challenge for current champ Tim Sylvia.
However, Sherdog reports that Cro Cop will make his Octagon debut against Jake O’Brien — “a young, undefeated fighter whose strength is on the mat.”
Might as well enter with a bang. The UFC needs some highlights to market the foreign talent to a major American audience, right?
Wow.
Thank you, Dana White.
Too bad for Jake that he drew the shortest straw.
