There are compelling arguments on both sides of the issue as to whether or not elbows are good for mixed martial arts competition.

The UFC, of course, allows them. Pride FC, on the other hand, doesn’t.

Elbows can often end fights early because of cuts or impact the performance of a fighter. And, sometimes fighters who are dominating a fight but get cut badly can lose the bout because of doctor stoppage.

Look no further than Kenny Florian, who opened up Sean Sherk’s head with a razor-like elbow blow during UFC 64. He lost that fight soundly, but the amount of blood in the cage that night, according to Florian, made it difficult to execute submissions.

For all the folks who think elbows are bad for the sport, we give you Anderson Silva’s knockout of Tony Fryklund at Cage Rage 16: “Critical Condition” earlier this year:

Put simply, elbows are a part of the game for which UFC fighters need to account. And what is good ground and pound without dropping some heavy elbows on an opponent’s face?

We say keep ‘em.

We also say keep sending us the clips and videos — the good ones never get old. Thanks UFC maniacs …
